CBob04 Achtung Panzer!

I think at least a few curraghs should be built, one following the coast in each direction to delineate our continent. Later, we may want suicide curraghs/galleys to try to make overseas contacts. I'm not sure about buying CB, are we going to even build temples? If we trade right, we can get all or most of those techs we are behind in for Writing. At Emperor level and above, tech hoarding just isn't viable. If you try researching it all by yourself, you fall behind even further. Trading Writing is risky. Not trading Writing is suicide. I'd say Writing on maximum, and hope for no demands before then.

Two curraghs make sense, just like TheOverseer said. One sails one direction, the second goes the other. There job is to find the other AI on this land, and maybe the AIs on the other land.

I wasn't planning on building Temples; I tend to avoid them and build Libraries instead. More culture and they help us to learn things.

I do think that with sharp trading we can get several techs for Writing, so let's try to learn it as fast as we can.

My son is in town this week, along with his fiance, so my time will be limited. Monday (March 17) and Tuesday (March 18) are already scheduled. I am sure I can sneak in a few minutes here or there, but I can't promise when I'll get my turns played.

And with these early turns so easy to play I don't want to ask for a skip. (Not when I'm hosting the game, anyway. :eek: )

If by Wednesday I can't even get a Strategy Post done, I'll ask for a skip.

I'm liking this map so far. Been along time since I've played as the Germans as well. I think I'm gonna take the 4000 BC save and play a solo game along you guys. We'll see how differently each one turns out :)

I've got to ask for a skip; sorry. The time just has not been here this week to focus on much Civ.

With Easter coming up this weekend, playing time may be limited for all of us.

If by Monday we're still in this same place I'll reclaim the game (and post to indicate that).

lurker's comment: I would be interested in hearing your results. Where might you report them?

@Darski, well I would report them, but now that I'm home, the 4000 BC save doesn't seem to work. Anybody who might happen to have it care to re-upload it?

Enjoy!

Downloaded the save. I will play this afternoon or evening.

I guess I will post the results of my gripping turn-set now. I only played 9 to get us even, as I started on turn 51, according to CivAssist 2. Here is my turn-log:

Spoiler :

Pre-Flight: CivAssist 2, Word running. Open the save, look things over. Mull over where to put next Settler, Leaning toward river with floodplains. Tech situation, we are way behind. I’m going to play a little “Let’s make a deal”. Purchase Masonry from the Iroquois for 20 gold, 7gpt. Purchase Iron Working from the Mongols for Masonry, 40 gold and 3 gpt. Now when Writing comes in, we can get everything else if we want it. Map reveals Iron right beside Frankfurt.

Civilian units:
Workers 6

Military units:
Warriors 6
Archers 1

Press enter=>

IBT: Hamburg warrior=>worker.

Turn 1, 1700 BC: A little exploring reveals nothing of interest.

IBT: Nothing to report.

Turn 2, 1675 BC: MM Berlin to try to get settler on growth.

IBT: See an Iroquois settler pair coming our way. He better not go towards our river:trouble:

Turn 3, 1650 BC: MM to try to avoid too much waste at Berlin, still wasting 1 food 3 shields.

IBT: Berlin settler=>settler.
Leipzig worker=>warrior.
Konigsberg worker=>curragh.

Turn 4, 1625 BC: CivAssist 2 reveals that everyone else has Writing already. Bummer, there goes the trade value.

IBT: Vikings establish embassy in Berlin.

Turn 5, 1600 BC: Explorers exploring, worker working.

IBT: Hamburg worker=>warrior.

Turn 6, 1575 BC: Nothing to report.

IBT: Allegheny built on hill near tobacco.

Turn 7, 1550 BC: Nothing to report.

IBT: Warrior05 survives barb warrior, promotes. Hamburg now hooked into trade network. Barb warrior pops out of fog near Frankfurt.

Turn 8, 1525 BC:MM Berlin to lessen wastage. I’d build a granary to make faster growth and less wastage.

IBT: Leipzig warrior=>worker. Barb doesn’t go for Frankfurt.

Turn 9, 1500 BC: Vikings and Mongols now have Mathematics. Next player can try to figure out a trade or not. Played only 9 turns to get us even.

Cities
Berlin Settler in 5 turns, growth in 3(needs MM’ing next turn).
Leipzig Worker in 4 turns, growth in 3.
Hamburg Warrior in 2 turns, growth in 7.
Frankfurt Warrior in 1 turn, growth in 1.
Konigsberg Curragh in 3 turns, growth in 5.

Civilian units:
Settlers 1
Workers 5

Military units:
Warriors 8
Archers 1

Contacts: 3
Iroquois
Mongols
Vikings

At the pace the tech is going in this game, we may need to build Swords and do some pointy stick research, or we will be hopelessly behind. Do the rules allow that? If not, we are going to need to do some careful trading and building our economy to get us caught up. We now have 6 workers, so that should help some. We need roads especially, the settler I sent towards the flood plain area is still 3-4 turns out. We also need to make an updated dotmap for our next 2-3 cities. The Mongols and Vikings have Mathematics, but they will not trade. Writing is already obsolete for tech trading, so I'm thinking that we had better just shoot for Philosophy, if that isn't already researched. Good luck to the next player.

The save:

Things have slacked off a little bit, but I still haven't had time to look at the save. That is my plan for tonight, after church.

We are average compared to Iroquois.
We are average compared to Scandanvia.
We are weak compared to Mongols.

International Relations
We have an embassy with the Vikings, but no one else. Since we lack Writing we cannot establish any embassies.

A war between the Mongols and anybody else would be nice. :D

Settlers and Workers
We have a settler/warrior pair 1S of Konigsberg. I don't remember where they are going. I do remember some talk about the flood plains, but nothing specific.

We have two workers building a road to connect Jungle Spices 1NW of Hamburg. They have 5 turns to go. Ouch! But we do need that second luxury.

We have two workers building a road on a mined BG 1NW of Berlin, which will also connect to the mined Cow 1N-1NW of Berlin. They have 1 turn to go.

We have one worker making a road between Konigsberg and Berlin; three turns to go.

Once the workers near Berlin are done, should we use them to connect to Frankfurt? That would mean roading three grasslands (two of them BGs). The other route to Frankfurt (via Leipzig) would mean roading two hills (one of them Iron), a hill and a forest or a forest and a plains. Once they get to Frankfurt they could road to our new city, which should be built by that time.

Early Warfare
We can engage in warfare this early in the game, and we may have to do that in order to get some better city locations. We're rapidly running out of nice, green, flat city sites.

I do focus on luxuries, so the Ivory of the Iroquois and the Incense of the Vikings are very tempting right now. However, they look to be on rather poor ground for a city, at least, for one of our cities.

Trading
We can trade for techs with our three neighbors, but it is expensive. Their asking price for everything except Ceremonial Burial involves GPT (not surprising) and all our gold. While Writing may not be a big help right away, we do have the curragh in Konigsberg that can find other AIs for us.

The Iroquois look to be a little backwards; we might able to use that to our advantage.

EDIT:
Sasquatch, these are still your turns to play. I just needed to get focused in on the game again.

I'm not the best with Dot Maps, but I'll get us started.

South Germany 1500 BC
SouthGermany_1500_BC_Tweaked.jpg

Blue Dot looks to be our best choice as we near the Iroquois. I don't really like it, but it does give us 3 green tiles.

Around the flood plains I see several good sites, indicated by the Circles. Light Blue gives us Iron and 3 FPs; Pink gives us 2 FPs, but one of those has Wheat. Light Green also gives us 2 FPs with nothing special, though with one culture expansion we do get the Wheat, the Oasis and the Fish.

Which ever Circle we build, it will soon become a specailist city or a worker pump.

North Germany 1500 BC
NorthGermany_1500_BC_Tweaked.jpg

Our choices northwards are more limited than south but I see two good sites, the White Dot and Light Green Dot. Light Green has better potential since it includes a cow. I see now that if we move Light Green 1NW we gain the lake (no aqueducts needed to get to size 12). The Cow is lost doing that, but a library would let us claim that Cow.

White Dot is not a great site, but it has plenty of grassland and a river, so it could grow quickly.

Sorry C-Bob, Im gonna have to drop out. Thought I could swing joining an SG but it takes too long. Will enjoy reading em all. Always have.
That's too bad; I was very glad to have you in the game.

And yes, SGs do take a lot of time. Playing the turns takes longer because you are logging what you are doing. To move a worker just takes a click but to tell which worker, where they were, where they moved to and why they were moved; now, that takes time to record. Plus, battle logs. And trying to get your mind focused on what is going on in the game when you are not actually playing it.

Yeah, but its fun!

I think there is an open SG (anyone can play) by dagdha, his Open Space Seed, >>HERE<<. You might want to play some turns on it.
