CDG Series Discussion Thread

ModAcken does NOT work on Macs, so isn't suitable for CDG, unfortunately. But there is absolutely nothing wrong with having CDG, the new DC series with NQ and ModAcken series running in parallel.

Well I certainly appreciate that at least one of those three is Mac compatible!

You gave us Mac Users Play ModAcken - Challenge #1. So why not Mac Users Play ModAcken Challenge #2 for CDG #15? It is not like the game experience will have gotten worse for us DLL challenged folks!

Well it was based on a mac version I did but never updated.
Interesting. I have not fired it up since that game, but Steam has updated it twice I think. If you did not update it, where are those prompts coming from?

If I create a game from it, won’t Windows users be able to open it too?

Why not use the same method Consentient is doing when trying to play civ5 mods ?
Can't you just bootcamp windows on a mac machine?
I have no interest in running Windows just to play a Civ5 mod. I would run Boot Camp if it meant I could work from home five days a week. Absent that kind of motivation, I would just rather do without.

My mac version is not on steam. So I guess you're subscribed to the windows version and half of it would not work properly on your end.

If you create a game, windows users won't be able to load it with the mod.

The reason is simple. The custom DLL add stuff to the save games so another version of the game simply doesn't read these save games properly and vice versa.

Beetle, I'm truly sorry that Aspyr/2K/Firaxis dropped the ball when it came to properly porting Civ 5 to the Mac.

I hope you'll appreciate that the reason 2 out of the 3 of those series are built with (Windows-only) mods in mind is because it's a six-year old game and those few fanatics of us left wanting to play it are now looking to diversify our experiences of that game.

If you want to join in with us, it only takes an hour or so to set up Windows with Bootcamp, and I'd make myself available to give you any help you might need in getting sorted.

I appreciate your condolences. SMAC, III, and IV had similar levels of neglect. So no surprise with V. I would have thought the popularity of iOS would have 2K moving to more modern (and platform independent) development methods for VI -- but radio silence on that point is telling!

Makes perfect sense, I understand completely. I bode you all no ill-will. Have fun!

Well, I don’t have Win7 discs lying around (like I did when I last used Boot Camp for XP), but it is not technical hurdles that preclude me from bothering. I think I said as much before.

When Boot Camp first shipped, there were a bunch of (well informed even) predictions that it signaled the end of Mac OS games. I have not seen follow-up about why that turned out not to be true.

Running Boot Camp seems like such an obvious solution to Windows gamers. To that, add a few Civ-first-platform-second endorsements, and running Boot Camp seems all the more reasonable. But I do not think I am alone in not willing to have my home recreational desktop look anything like my work desktop.

It has been three weeks with no word from DonkeyFish on his India map.

I will post my America Mesopotamia Diplo VC map in ~72 hours (Monday morning, U.S. Eastern) unless someone volunteers something more interesting. That gives us all the weekend to knit up the Celts map.

Playing the America map has given me an idea for another Diplomatic map down the road. I think I have found a way to make a Diplo victory more difficult and interesting.

This idea would also introduce a slightly different achievement point system approach. Everyone starts at 20 points and lose points for not meeting some criteria.

Diplo VC

Achievements
  • Cultural Diversity: lose 1pt per civilization eliminated and not recalled before the end of the game
  • City State Defender: lose 1pt per CS captured and not liberated by the end of the game
  • Emergent Leadership: lose 1pt per World Leader vote where you fail to emerge as World Leader
  • Gold Thrifty: lose 1pt per 250 gold gifted a CS

AIs: include some notorious CS aggressors, warmongers

You would need you focus hard on quests and rely on either Gunboat Diplomacy or Treaty Organization to win the game. Or maybe Liberate a lot of CSes or civs.

Any interest or suggestions for such a game?

Your top picks for CS aggressors would be:

Monty, Askia, Ashurbanipal, Attila, Bismarck, Catherine and Genghis

You could make it even harder by arranging the CS so that it's much more likely for them to be conquered.

But Achievement D seems like it would take most people to negative points, tbh, unless they went Domination. So it would be a Domination sweep that ultimately chose to win by Diplo instead, not a peaceful game. That's the way I see it.

But it sounds fun nevertheless!

Love it!

Achievements A/B/C are good, and very little work to tally.

Achievement D seems kind of annoying and petty to track. But I like the idea of penalizing a gold heavy approach.

Maybe -1 point each time you borrow money from an AI?

The goal of achievement D is to make sure you go for either Gunboat Diplomacy or Treaty Organization. I have never taken these tenets in any of my games and would like to try one of them for once :D However, if you can drop money on CSes easily they kind of become superfluous/unneeded especially when AIs stop trying after a certain threshold. So how about

D. Gold Thrifty: lose 1pt per 250 gold gifted to a CS after you adopt an Ideology

Or maybe I will try to think of something else to achieve the same goal.

The only way to get D is to peaceblock AI from completing their quests, or to just coup everywhere tbh. I'm not sure I like that achievement, it's too difficult.

Or maybe I will try to think of something else to achieve the same goal.

It seems to me you're trying to make a DiploV about something other than gold and ass-kissing the AI. Unless you outright specify that Gunboat or NATO must be used in place of gold, there's no way around that, really.

But both Gunboat and NATO are less than 1/10th as good as gold :P

@DQ, I like your more recent ideas.

How about -1 pt for each SP still locked in Patronage?
And/or -2 pts for not unlocking Gunboat Diplomacy or Freedom Trade Routes?
