It is the year 2168.
You and your compatriots have just been awoken from a deep slumber.
The stasis you have been held in is over.
You have arrived.
Outside is a hospitable, but barren planet.
When first discovered it was named Tolima.

The plagues had began the collapse of modern society.
Disease, pestilence, miasma and a rain of frogs.
Some blamed our lack of faith
Others blamed our lack of knowledge

It doesn't matter who is to blame, the harsh reality is this,
Earth has become an inhospitable place.
Seasons have become erratic and violent in their changes
Humanity huddles in its Mega-Cities
enclosed from reality around them

Your mission, is to ensure the continuity of the human race.

RULES:

Map and Expansion: Centaurus Tolima has been mapped. On the maps you have your armies and development levels. Each turn you begin development of 4 more provinces. If you enter a war, you can only develop 1. You cannot conquer undeveloped provinces, you can use your armies to capture developed provinces. The land has been divided, both with thick and thin lines. Develop all of the provinces within a thick border and you will receive a stability bonus.

Army: The army will be represented by an icon on the map. Your army will be enhanced via technology and stability. Combat is very simple; factors involved are Technology level, Development Level and also Stability. To train and equip an army cost 4 Economic points (EP). Maintenance for each unit costs 2EP per turn.

Economic Productivity: EP is calculated by the formula below:

P=(E+S)-U +(T*10)

P= Total Productivity
E= Sum of economic productivity from Province Development.
S= Stability Level
U= Army Upkeep
T= Technology Level

Technology: There is no technology tree, its simply advanced by investing in it. Simply the more money you pour into this, it knocks onto other stats. Your economy will grow, your troops will be stronger, Projects will complete faster etc etc. For each level you advance, the cost to do so doubles. Level 1 cost 25EP, Level 2 will cost 50EP. There are some abilities unlocked with each tech level.
For instance until you reach level 3, you cannot move military units along the tunnels.
At level 5.. you can BUILD tunnels! Each time you advance a level, you can negotiate with me what advantage it brings to your nation.

Stability: Stability is directly determined by 2 factors. By your expansion and by your military victories.

If you claim one complete country (outlined in black) your stability goes up by 2. If you win a battle it goes up by 1, but if you lose it goes down by 1. Many other things can also effect your stability.

Province Development: Province development provides income (1 point of Development = +1EP Per Turn), but will also provide a defensive bonus equal to 5% per Level. The cost to upgrade doubles with each level. You cannot partly upgrade.
Level 1: 1EP
Level 2: 2EP
Level 3: 4EP and so on..

Example Stats:

Magnezius // NedimNapoleon
Economy (Upkeep): 5 (0)
Tech Level: 0/25 (level 1)
Stability: 0
Culture: 0
Projects: None

Culture: Culture is a modifier similar to technology, it adjusts things in subtle ways. The higher your Culture, the more good things can happen to you. I will award culture points by how involved you are with the NES. Conduct diplomacy, write stories, produce anything that futhers your nation and the NES, and your nations culture will be rewarded. At levels significantly higher than others, province flips and other such goodies are possible

Projects: Here is where you are invited to think out the box. I have given you a very blank slate to begin with.. projects can get you anything, flex the rules. Want a unique unit? Want to be able to harvest the toxic seas? Want to nerf you're opponents culture.. heck, why not plant a spy network while your at it. I'd not be surprised if much of these projects are secret and devious! :evil:

Win Conditions:

Conquest (Just you left)
Coalition Victory (Just you and up to two allies)
Alien Victory (No Humans left) [Not really a victory, but one of sorts]
Human Victory (No Aliens Left) [Not really a victory, but one of sorts]
Coalition Victory (One Human, One Alien race left)

Robert Smith // The Lizard King
Colour: Blue
Nationality: The North American Union
Religion: Christianity, non-denominational
Description: A politician in the NAU city of Philadelphia. After threats of war between the NAU, the EU, and China became a reality, Robert set about building a bunker not only for his family, but for his community. Chinese leader, President Li threatened the use of nuclear weapons to deter a Western invasion of his lands. No one doubted he'd pull the trigger.
Two years after the start of World War 3, after an attempted Chinese landing on the Pacific Coast, the North American Union attempted to land on Hainen island. Li, a madman, kept true to his promise, and began firing nuclear warheads at the North American Union. Several were deflected by defenses the NAU had set up, and only a few hit their targets. The NAU in the meantime had fired several missiles at China, and Europe, as Europe fired at the NAU and China. Of course these were small amounts. Nothing apocalyptic. But Robert, and his friends, and neighbors knew that life on Earth could not be continued on, should wars such as that continue. Not to mention the awful plagues wiping out entire cities.

Trekking down the Atlantic Coast, Robert eventually found himself, and several hundred other people in line on a new government "Class 1-2 Colonization Ship". The ship itself was large, and untested. But Robert knew he had to get his family out of this ailing world before more nuclear hell-fire rained down around him. As soon as the gates to the colonizer opened, news in the crowd spread of more nuclear strikes. Rumor or not, Robert holding onto his wife and his sons hand made a mad dash to the ship, along with several hundred other people. In the chaos, Robert became seperated from his wife, who was holding his son. He soon found himself on the loading dock of the ship. As the countdown for lift off continued, and more and more people were pushing aboard, he struggled to look into the crowd to find his wife.

And their she was. In the crowd, almost being crushed by the sheer wait of the refugees. All he could see was her golden hair, and her arms, outstretched, holding his son. He grabbed the child. Almost immediatley after, armed guards began pushing the crowd back. The ship began to launch, rising ever so slowly. As Robert sat on the loading deck, all he could see was his wife, looking up at him. He had to turn his back, and walked towards his new future on the ship.

**********
It turns out that Robert was the only member of the colonists that had any sort of political, or mass management experience. He was elected by the people in a heart beat to lead them on their new home. Struggling through horrible bouts of depression over his lost wife, he seems intent on making this colony a great one. A new Earth even. Anything to keep his mind off of the past.

OOC: Is that okay?

Charles Michel//Lord of Elves
Color: Yellow
Nationality: Fifth French Republic
Religion: Christianity, non-denominational
Description: A veteran living in Paris, Charles Michel was one of millions disenfranchised by the Great Strikes of the 2130's prior to the Third World War. The collapse of the Euro and then the European Union left France and many other European countries in the cold. With increased reliance on trade with its former colonies of Morocco and Algeria, France turned inward, putting its hands deeper into African affairs. It came as a complete surprise in the 2140's when the Third World War began, putting an end to several hundred years of tiptoeing between western and eastern interests.

Charles Michel and his friends and family were caught in the middle. Selected at random by La Commission pour la Prospérité Extra-Solaire luckily along with many of those he knew, and many more that he didn't. After several weeks of organization, Charles has established a type of leadership over his fellow colonists, his clear head guiding him through the political intrigue and the rivalries. Whether he can forge collection into something that shall last is yet to be seen.

@ TLK: A great first application. I like it, I like it a lot, and I hope other people write off the history you have created to expand earths history.

One thing I don't like however is the bit after ********************* I'd like that given a bit more flesh when you have the time :)

@LOE: Excellent, excellent! :)

@Abaddon- Thank you! My plans were to write a story about his election/application, I was just going to wait a bit, to make sure that part was okay.

Doctor Simon Dahlquist // Haseri
Colour: Red
Nationality: 'We have left the old nations behind us. Let them be forgotten.'
Religion: Atheists, agnostsics, humanists, secularists plus a few neo-abrahamics and Pascallian omnists.
Description: Doctor Dahlquist was always something of a revolutionary. He hated what the politicians were doing to the world. During the Great Strikes he contacted some of his colleagues in the NAU, the EU, what was left of Russia, even some from China and the Indian Ocean Conglomerates. He had always planned to go to Tolima. With the help of his contacts, he designed a ship that would take them across the void of space. He would take the best minds the Earth had to offer, to start a new world, designed intelligently.

The Shoulders Of Giants left the Earth at the same time as the others.

John Maxwell // merciary
Colour: Olive Green
Nationality: Tricon Corporation
Religion: mainly Atheist
Description: Through a series of legal maneuvers and bribes Tricon became the first Corporation to own a nation back on Earth. While it was only a small series of island they were able to turn it into an economic and technological force. After a series of wars ravaged the planet the Corporation decided that Earth may no longer be capable of turning a profit for much longer so they decided to expand their operations beyond the planet. They assigned John Maxwell to head up this new operation. He is an experienced member of the Tricon board with a knack for sensing anything that can turn a profit. It was his idea that the Corporation should invest in Tolima. He has what could be considered an odd habit for a high ranking member of the corporation of actually walking through the lower operations on a normal basis. This has allowed him to reduce waste and cut problems before they become an issue.

Great stuff.

@Merciary, could I have more of a background on John Maxwell please?

@Haseri, nice idea for a "nation" :)

Do we get to name our colonies/bases, if we wanted to create a proto-national entity or something along those lines?

You will expand out from your initial colonial ship landing.. That itself will turn into a city, name it, you, your people, this planet, the seasons etc etc etc whatever you like! :king:

Right, I just added some stuff.

@Abaddon

Can we get a map of the planet/location we've landed at, or is this all made up?

There is a map.
But whad-ya-know, the sensors on your colony ships didn't survive the landing..so you have no idea where on the planet you landed!
You only know your immediate, visible surroundings... :evil:

@Abaddon, will this be similar to Alpha Centauri? If yes or no, did we all arrive in the same ship?

@ Gelion. Sadly i've never had the fortune to play it.. but I believe the settings are similar-ish.. some may note Tolima is just another name for Alpha Centuri. If you wish to port over SMAX stuff into this NES via stories and your creativity.. by all means it is welcome.

I may explore the SMAX universe a bit more for buildings/tech levels etc..

Alexis Gray // Karalysia
Colour: Gray
Nationality: There is no nationality. Only Reason.
Religion: The Cult of Reason
Description: When the Collapse began with the plague and following destruction most, if not many turned to god. Not Alexis, who worked the New York megacity. She turned to the Cult of Reason that formed all over the world mostly among scientists, intellectuals and college students who were embittered by the destruction and blamed the ignorance and superstition and religion of humanity as being a cause of the devastation. They swore their mission to create a new world free of the cancer of religion, a new world devoted only to Science, Reason, Progress, and Order where religion would be eradicated. Thus they left to Tolima.

Jan Voronov // Gelion
Colour: White
Nationality: Mostly European (Slavic) with a mix of all other majour nationalities
Religion: None is essential, all constructive religions accepted.
Description:

Every great civilization adds a several more bricks to the home of human conscience. When they die or transform a few more are added finish the row so that new builders can continue on a firm foundation. The fall of the Soviet Union has marked the end of a great civilization, but the people carried on the beliefs, the literature and the moral code of the common people further. Over the years these ideas mixed and hard-coded with similar ideas of people from all around the world (centered in Europe and North America).

These ideas were simple. Of a society where overcoming yourself was part of the job, where hard work and service were valued over the human jungle and desire for quick cash. A society that is about discovery, moral strength the important things in life. The movement included people from all religions and nationalities as the core values define a person, not blind following of any dogma.

A century and a half has passed and the movement solidified despite persecutions in some of the worst of the morally corrupt states. Research, fighting pollution, fighting corruption were high on the agenda, but the highest of all were hopes for a world reborn. Since early 2100 the Earth was experiencing greater and greater problems with economy, shortage of resources began to show in every day life. When was the last time you saw a pen made out of wood? It was clear that Earth was a lost cause.

A project to take a humanity away from Earth was initiated by a small amount of people with almost no hope of success. By 2110 a few hundred thousand people were sharing ideas and some governments (Europa, Russian Core, North American Union) started to contribute to the project. By the time the world exploded only 2 of the ships out of a thousand planned had been completed. The project "Road to the Stars" was not the only one active at the time. Humanity has progressed beyond Earth with mining colonies being established on the Moon and automatic stations reaching out to Mars for its resources (following the collapse of a human colony there). Many private corporations, governments and organizations funded construction projects in space and most of them (which was not apparent at the time) were colony ships or space cities of some kind.

In 2143 the RTS project ships (RTS-1 Explorer and RTS-2 Vostok) were scheduled to perform a mock expedition to Mars and back when a signal was received by ship crews. "Accept passenger shuttles at <coordinates>, prepare for long term haul, the balloon is going up. Good luck, Earth" Soon after the old shuttles began to appear in the sky. The scene was well known to many sci-fi fans, but the horror was in living through THE Evacuation. RTS ships accepted the destined shuttles (Earth control knew the capacity of each ship, thats why each were loaded to 110% of designed capacity) and left the Earth immediately. None of the crew or the passengers knew why the signal was given or what happened to Earth after they left.

Some time later RTS-1 appeared on the orbit of Tolima and began descent. By this time the inhabitants have already agreed to consider space as their new home and figured out a new name for themselves: Pioneers. Human Pioneers.
