[RD] Charlie Kirk assassinated

It isn't, but barring an interstate stalking shooter, the likelihood of conservative shooter is much higher in Utah than in a blue state. Sure it may be a "Have Gun, Will Travel" episode and I expect we will find out sooner than later. BTW, the overturning of Roe v Wade has now opened the door for restricting travel by women.

And as was pointed out above, it was 180m, in the neck, from a vantage position, and apparently, shooter got away from the scene. Sounds very much like premeditated assassination. This doesn't look like a work of a local nutcase, but someone who put their mind in it. I don't think a bit of interstate travel would be much of a discouragement for them.

The thing about interstate travel is that it requires time and money to do so, and folks can and will talk themselves out of it. Heard a few stories of folks who have when they were alone with their thoughts on the road.

Especially in this day and age of the internet, it's very easy for a local nutcase to do something like this rather than someone from out of town, or especially from out of state.

In other news, there was a school shooting in Colorado today. The irony of all this attention over a guy who thinks empathy does a lot of damage, and almost zero attention to kids being shot.

Shooting at Evergreen High School in Colorado leaves several students hurt; suspect among those injured

Three students were critically wounded on Wednesday in a shooting at Evergreen High School in the Colorado foothills. The Jefferson County Sheriff's Office says one of those students is the shooting suspect.

The shooting took place just before 12:30 p.m. at the school located at 29300 Buffalo Park Road in Evergreen, which is 28 miles southwest of Denver.

Jacki Kelley, the Public Information Officer for the Jefferson County Sheriff's Office, said they began receiving numerous calls about a shooting at the school at 12:24 p.m. Hundreds of law enforcement officers from across the Denver metro area responded to help with the situation. Kelley said they formed multiple teams and cleared the school room by room.

Nearby Wilmot Elementary School was also placed on lockdown for a short time.

St. Anthony's Hospital in Lakewood said there are three Evergreen High School students at the hospital who suffered gunshot wounds; all are in critical condition.

"We've received three victims, all minors from Evergreen High School. They are currently being actively treated at St. Anthony Hospital. We are a Level 1 Trauma Center and prepared for situations like this," said Kevin Cullinan, President, CEO of CommonSpirit St. Anthony Hospital. "Each of the victims that we have sustained gunshot wounds. They are all, all three victims are all either in the Emergency Department or operating rooms at this time."

Law enforcement later confirmed that one of those three students is the suspect, and the scene at the school is now safe. They said a fourth student was also sent to the hospital with unknown injuries.

The school district announced that a reunification center is located at Bergen Meadow Elementary School, located at 1928 South Hiwan Drive. Those with students at Evergreen High School are encouraged to go to the reunification center, not the high school.

Shortly following the shooting, an Evergreen High School teacher told CBS Colorado that they were on lockdown with some students inside a game room in the school. Just after 1:30 p.m., people could be seen exiting the school single file.

Authorities have Highway 73 closed in the area near Evergreen Lake. Access to the lake remains open.

A mother who spoke with CBS Colorado said her son was near a door when the shooting happened. The Evergreen High School freshman was in the lunchroom when he said he heard 15 to 30 gunshots.

"I know they've done drills at school in classrooms, but they were at lunch," the woman explained. "So that's what, something that many students have said is that they just didn't even know what to do, like a lockdown drill, with this happening at lunch."

She suggested that parents talk to their students about this kind of scenario and what actions they should take. "Obviously, you don't think it's going to happen at your school or to your child, then it happens in your backyard and you're shocked. But it seems to be happening so much that we shouldn't be shocked, I guess."

Her son said he wants the victims to know that everyone is thinking of them and hoping they will be okay.

Jeffco Public Schools canceled after-school activities in order to "prioritize local and district resources to support the Evergreen community."

"The strength of the Jeffco community lies in the care and support of one another. Please check in with your loved ones," district officials said in a prepared statement.

Gov. Jared Polis and several other elected leaders in Colorado issued statements after the shooting expressing deep concern. "We are all praying for the victims and the entire community," Polis said.

FBI Director Kash Patel said the FBI is among the law enforcement agencies who are at the scene of the shooting.

"We're aware of the tragic situation unfolding near Denver. The FBI is on scene and in full support of local authorities to ensure everyone's safety," Patel wrote in a post on X.

You might want to consider the fact that gun-totting conservative crowd to which you referred earlier absolutely adored Kirk. Not many people with motive against him there.

Yeah, see, you're kinda out of your depth here. You do not know how deep the rabbit hole goes.

What we know so far points to well-planned assassination...that's not a thing such nutcases are known for. Getting away from the scene like this one did is not easy. Such person won't be deterred by the time and money spent on travel.

Yeah, see, you're kinda out of your depth here. You do not know how deep the rabbit hole goes.

Do you have anything to substantiate that, or is that just wishful thinking?

Anyway, it's late. There'll be probably more info when I wake up. But my guess....relative (most likely parent) or close friend of a school shooting's victim.

Do you have anything to substantiate that, or is that just wishful thinking?

Nothing specific, just an understanding of the US right honed over more than twenty years of observation and conflict with them. If the shooter's some kind of right-wing whacko, it will probably be a grievance over something that only like 12 people know about. Either that or it'll be something just fully insane like "he was too close to the Jews."

Trump is our President and we should thank him for every good thing that happens in America
uh huh

I wouldn't want to gamble on the prospect of Charlie Kirk being turned into a martyr over this for MAGA or anyone else. That you may believe they're just as stupid as they are evil doesn't mean they'll go and sulk after any act of political violence against one of their own.
So yeah, just be careful what you're really wishing for here...

Just learned this: Utah's Republican controlled legislature just passed a new law this past Legislative session, signed by the governor on March 25th, effective May 7th, which allowed adults with concealed carry permits to openly carry on college campuses.

Utah, a constitutional carry state since 2021 allowing permitless concealed carry for those 21 and older, previously required campus firearms to be concealed for permit holders.

HB 128, sponsored by Rep. Matthew Gwynn (R), recodifies dangerous weapons laws and explicitly permits open carry on campuses for those 18+ with a CWP, effective May 7, per the Utah Legislature’s bill text.

The law states: “An individual who may otherwise lawfully possess a firearm may possess a firearm at the individual’s residence, openly possess a firearm in most public locations, and conceal a firearm in most public locations without a concealed carry permit,” including higher education institutions.

University of Utah Chief Safety Officer Keith Squires emphasized in an August 18, statement, “Our highest priority is preserving public safety on campus. As a subdivision of the state, the University of Utah enforces state law, including concealed weapon rules. Equally important is our role in educating members of our campus community about how to responsibly carry a concealed weapon on campus and how to engage with roommates, professors and others to avoid conflicts and misunderstandings.” Residents can request non-roommates with firearms, and simulated weapons like Nerf guns are prohibited in housing, per U of U Policy 1-003.

Prior to HB 128, campuses like UVU and the University of Utah implied concealed carry legality but lacked open carry clarity. The bill, passed unanimously in the House (70-0) on February 7 and Senate (25-0) on March 6, was signed amid Utah’s strong gun rights culture, with over 1.2 million CWPs issued. Critics, including Everytown for Gun Safety, argued it increases risks on campuses, citing 394 school shootings since 1999.

You're saying, you have no idea either?

*looks around* yeah, i wonder what it would be like to have a violent, vengeful right-wing movement comprised of complete morons running everything

I just woke up and read that Charlie Kirk was killed. Assassinated it seems.
I'm still reading the news.

The man was a husband and a father of a three-year-old and a one-year-old.
To see him get shot and killed is saddening.
I don't want to speculate about who did it, what political side he/she was from... it's crazy either way.

What counts is that someone was shot for having an opinion and discussing that publicly - for the world to see.
He was open about what he thought.
He was open about what he liked.
I sometimes agreed, and sometimes disagreed.

Public discourse is a pillar of a free society. Once that discussion ends, tyranny starts. You will always, always, have people disagree with you. Simply for the fact that we're not the same. We have different families, different backgrounds, different dreams, different ideas. It's impossible to always agree - and people far to often forget (including me) that having a different opinion is ok.

You're allowed to express your opinion - it's up to the listener to draw a conclusion if they agree or disagree.
To shoot or silence others just because of a difference of opinion is tyranny.

Next time you disagree with someone, don't curl up in anger and wish they'd shut up, but listen. Think about where their ideas come from, what could be true or not true about it.
Be open to other ideas, or simply disagree and reason your opinion to change their mind.
But be happy you can hear their opinion - because it only means that you can say yours.

If you shut other people up, you're shutting yourself up. There are people in totalitarian countries who can tell you all about it - oh wait, no they can't.

As far as authoritarian societies spiralling into endemic social and political violence go, this is certainly one of them. The place has already shrugged off the assassination of politicians in the last three months, it'll keep accelerating.

Good time to read up on Horst Wessel.

President Trump has released a video response to the Charlie Kirk killing.

Here are some reactions including from other world leaders after they looked Charlie Kirk up. :hmm:

Donald Trump

The US president hailed him as a "great, and even legendary" figure, "loved and admired by all, especially me".
"He inspired millions and tonight all who knew him and loved him are united in shock and horror," he said.

Joe Biden

Former US president Joe Biden said: "There is no place in our country for this kind of violence.
"It must end now. Jill and I are praying for Charlie Kirk's family and loved ones."

JD Vance

Mr Trump's vice president had asked people to pray for Mr Kirk.
"Eternal rest grant unto him, O Lord," he later said.

Barack Obama

Another former Democrat president, Barack Obama, also denounced the killing, saying: "This kind of despicable violence has no place in our democracy.
"Michelle and I will be praying for Charlie's family tonight, especially his wife Erika and their two young children."

Nancy Pelosi

Former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi said: "The horrific shooting today at Utah Valley University is reprehensible. Political violence has absolutely no place in our nation."

Marjorie Taylor Greene

Republican representative and another staunch MAGA loyalist, Marjorie Taylor Greene said it was a "dark day for America".
"Charlie championed open dialogue for the good of our nation, and he was killed for it," she said.

Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni condemned the attack and expressed her condolences.

Swedish Christian Democrats leader Ebba Busch extended her sympathies.

Israel's Benjamin Netanyahu hailed Charlie Kirk as a "lion-hearted friend of Israel" dedicated to "speaking truth and defending freedom".

Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer said: "It is heartbreaking that a young family has been robbed of a father and a husband.
"We must all be free to debate openly and freely without fear - there can be no justification for political violence."

Conservative Party leader Kemi Badenoch said: "The killing of Charlie Kirk is a blow to everything Western civilization stands for: open discourse, robust debate and peaceful dissent. He lived his life by those very principles, no matter the danger it put him in.
"This may have happened far from our shores, but the rising intolerance of opposing views affects us all. We cannot turn a blind eye to it."

Reform UK leader Nigel Farage said: "This is a very dark day for American democracy. I am desperately sad for Charlie, his wife and children."

Former UK prime minister Boris Johnson said the murder of Charlie Kirk "is a tragedy, and a sign of the utter desperation and cowardice of those who could not defeat him in argument".

Javier Milei, President of Argentina, said "My condolences to Charlie Kirk's family and to all the young people in the world who admired and listened to him. A formidable disseminator of the ideas of freedom and a staunch defender of the West," Javier Milei began writing on his X account.
"He was the victim of a heinous murder in the midst of a wave of left-wing political violence throughout the region. The left is always at all times and places a violent phenomenon full of hatred. The whole world lost an incredible human being,"

Deputy Prime Minister (Australia) Richard Marles told Sky News the government's thoughts were with the family of Kirk.
"Our thoughts go out to the family of Charlie Kirk. This is an absolute tragedy," he said.
"We condemn any form of political violence. It really matters that political discourse occurs peacefully and through dialogue and conversation.
"From an Australian point of view, obviously. We very much cherish the ability to be able to have dialogue and conversation and debate in this country free from political violence.
"And it's really important that that is the case and that we condemn political violence where it occurs."
