Indeed, a rushed out patch is the last thing Civ7 needs now. Considering what the update is supposed to add it is a fairly important one and hopefully hits and sits, as some people might return for bigger maps and easier mod access. And I personally don't mind the delay, as it allows me to give Vic3 Charters of Commerce DLC and the accompanying 1.9 a week of undivided attention
There is a bit of a pattern forming. Not a lot of stuff released in updates before now, bigger update now after quite long hiatus and pushed back. Tonnes of bugs on release and in patches since. I hope this patch is bug free for all those playing.
However, I am struggling to see how the team they've put together can match up to the grandiose level of changes they have a vision for from the last update. I personally am seriously questioning whether Firaxis is capable of the challenge of making this game good. I hope they prove me wrong, and the extra week makes this bug free
Tomorrow's update has been pushed back to next week. Sounds like a good thing as it will give them time to address more changes, and make the game even better.
Just imagine...back in February: "Release of Civ7 has been pushed back to next year..."
I know...we can't turn back the clock. And commercial aspects were very powerful.

I guess they probably mean not a lot of stuff that had any (positive) impact on the fundamentals of the reception, as evidenced by the reviews trending worse the more patches come out. I think that’s why so much rides on this one being good, and why it’s better to delay it than release it before it’s ready.
No I mean that if I compare this to updates for other comparable games like EUIV, the updates have been very small in scope and vision. That has consequently done little to move the dial, but because it's just small bits of fluff.
This update is the first real chunky update they've attempted

For me 1.2.0 was a large update, and shouldn't be considered "fluff" imo, the upcoming one can be considered larger though as it's adding new game options, and a new town etc.

Eu4 isnt even a good comparison. They followed the pattern of 1 major expansion with one intermediate polish patch about a month after. There would be large gaps in time where there were no updates. Of course there is also the debates about the content themselves. Arguably, a number of QoL stuff was added into DLCs, and in some cases they took base game features out, tweaked them, and put them back in as DLC. Some content was in multiple DLCs. It was one of the reasons i stopped playing EU4 after 1k hours. Perhaps they got better towards the end of the games life cycle but by that point i was long turned off.
Not sure how I feel about the new menu look. I liked being able to see the pretty civ art and it's more in the background now, but being able to see all the civ abilities is good of course. All the other changes are great - can't wait to dive back into the game!

I love the new look of the loading menu, the previous one felt undercooked and rushed to me, also the difference in lighting of the leaders and backgrounds irked me, that has been fixed now with the darker backdrop. Love the way that all the bonuses are presented now too
Wow, not sure if anyone signed off on that guy being quite so honest about fan reaction to the game 'it feels like homework' and 'its on rails'. Feels like there was a version of that which you could layer in some more corporate speak and diplomacy!
I guess at least it's honest.
Either way, I'm still mostly angered by this update. The more I hear about it, the more effort I'm seeing them going to for these changes, changes that simply pass over responsibility to the player to make the game good, the more angry I get.
Allowing players to simply customise the game to the point where you can barely even recognise it, is not good design, it's just cowardice. I'm sure even Sid Meier made comments about these sort of things long in the past and I doubt he's happy about it now.
The designers of the game need to believe in their vision of the game and stick to it, and then improve it to make it work. Sticking plasters like 'hey you can just turn this stuff off' is weak. I'd rather they stood their ground and say 'no, these legacy paths are going to be good, and we are going to tweak them until they are' rather than throwing their hands up and running away from the problem.
Maybe they honestly don’t know how to fix it and giving people options is the best path they have. That’s better than nothing, and better than randomly trying stuff and hoping it works without a clear plan.
