Civ 4 locks up when entering multi player mode

I have been using multi player for some time with few problems. Recently when I enter my user id and password civ stops responding and locks up, sometimes even preventing task manager from being able to be opened. My Internet connection seems to be fine on other windows applications. Anybody able to help?

is there a firewall/antivir program that might keep it from going online?
