Civ 4 Reviews Are Bogus

If I may have your attention please, we interrupt this program for a special announcement. The following is a liasoned unbiased and professional review: "Tippy tabby topby, its the best thing since chocolate mashmallows!" (Is the check in the mail, yet?)

Game plays well for me. I think it is a great game. A big improvement over civ3. I think the reviews are fine.

So are you saying there are no bugs? Because that would seem odd considering Firaxis is working on a patch. If they are updating the software to fix the problems people are having, then how do people still manage to come to the conclusion that the software has nothing wrong with it?

He blamed graphic problems on bugs. I NEVER said there were no bugs!

Reviewers do not review based on other people's opinions. They base it on theirs. And since they get the best computers availible, they don't have many problems.

Yeah I don't get this. A $50 game is okay, but a $50 ram upgrade is not.

(Qualifier: I have no problems with the game, and have lots of disposable income)

There ARE people on very tight budgets in this world..e.g. Students/parents/homeowners/ to name but 3..the $50 for the game may have been the only money they could spare for their hobby this month/quarter/year.
They are quite entitled to be a tad upset when their system meets posted specs..but they can't run the game.
Show at least a little understanding..it would make these forums so much more pleasant.

This is very childish lack of respect of what your fellow forum users have to say. I wonder why I waste my words of wisdom with you. I must be childish.

Its not the fact that there are bugs that annoys me though, its the lack of communications between the developers and the community. Surely they must have known that the game wasn't ready. Therefore instead of closing there eyes and hoping that everything was going to be alright they should of been out on forums like these admitting that there were problems and promising that they would be fixed. Its this kind of blunder that has caused the most anger, not the bugs themselves.

Thank you. I've been trying to say this in other threads as well.

Problems? FIne.

Just don't leave me flapping in the wind with no communication and form email responses.

I find it funny that every other post on the main Civ4 forum is about game bug problems. At least it's not as bad as the Guild Wars forums were -- every single thread was indicating that everything was going down the drain. It wasn't really even about bugs over there though -- it was about specific nitpicking -- the worst nitpicking you can imagine.

... Think about that for a minute and then imagine all the "my game is bugged" posts on this forum turning into "this game sucks because it doesn't do this" posts.

Actually, no.....

Basically, your cheap ass PC sux0rz.

My custom built, sweet, new PC doesnt.

It still has problems running this game.

Don't shoot the messenger. (Shoot the coders and the management that rushed the release without Q/C...LOL)

The game runs pretty much fine on my almost 4 year old PC.

I'll admit the following however:

1. It takes literally over 5 minutes to load
2. It CAN get a bit jittery now and then
3. I'm playing a Large or Huge map (not sure which) but I've currently only discovered part of the map (the "island" me, Alexander, Asoka and Saladin are on. It seems like an island but may be a huge continent for all I know)
4. Sometimes if I press something like the Military Advisor or click the button that turns on the map grid, it takes AGES for it to work. The game just stops for minutes. Luckily it doesn't tend to happen for the Tech Tree or anything really important like that.

But overall, considering my machine: 64mb nVidia Geforce 3 Ti500, 512 RAM, 2ghz P4... it's going pretty well.

1) He didn't say anything about graphics. You don't even know what type of video card he has. And in any case, Firaxis has already said about the upcoming patch: "There were also a number of video card specific fixes." So it seems there are indeed video card related bugs.

2) You said:
I said that because he blamed it on bugs, but it isn't!
Granted, this is a poorly constructed sentance, but you seem to be saying bugs aren't the problem. I question how you can know bugs aren't the problem when Firaxis has admitted there are bugs that are causing problems.

3) Bugs are bugs. Although some may only show up on certain system types, it's clear that this game's bugs have nothing to do with how advanced your computer's hardware is. People with very low end systems are reporting no problems, while people with very high end systems are unable to play.

Are you trying to give me a lesson in English?

Then you didn't get my vote, because my new system works like a charm

I said that one problem isn't related to bugs!

All games have bugs! I thought this site was for Civ4 FANATICS, not Civ4 CRITICS.

I wish people would quit complaining about the game. If you can't play the game or don't like it, then quit trying. Quit coming to this forum and venting on all the other members who love the game and play it all day long with no problems. If you have a 5 year old PC that your not willing to upgrade (or don't know how) or buy a new one, then you shouldn't own a computer at all.

Dell XPS Gen 4
3 GBs of RAM
3.8 GB P4
Nvidia 6800 256MB Video card.

I can play Civ 4, minimize it and play other games at the same time.

If you don't want to keep up with technology, then don't expect to be able to play new games.

Exactly! Same thoughts here! All these whiners keep thinking PC Games are like console games just pop in the CD and play away, well its not that simple, true I wish it was but you just have to accept that its not like that, PC Games have to play on hundreds of different machines, configurations, hardware etc so there is bound to be people who cant play the game, if thats one of you then try to get some help without trolling on a forum insulting people and offending other gamers just because of your issues.

My PC runs both FEAR and CoD2 almost fully maxed out so I think it should be capable of running Civ 4. The problem is that Civ 4 has several (not just one) memory leak bugs that make the game progressively slow down as I play.

I think my comments on the reviews are entirely justified. Those of you who think that a reviewers job is to tell you how a game handles on their computer alone have very low expectations of journalists and their levels of prefessionalism. How long does it take to read through a few forums to see what other people's experience of the game is like? Defending the laziness and unprofessional attitude of game writers is a self defeating activity. It just makes them lazier and more useless.

Whenever I read a bad review I write to the editor of the site it was on and lay into them. These guys get free games all their life, get flown around the world for games events and treated like royalty. If in return they can't even be bothered doing a professional job they should as I said be put in stocks in a public place where people can urinate on them at will.
So your real beef with the reviews is that you don't have such a job? You are jealous that you aren't given free games and get treated like royalty.

BTW, I run an athalon 1800 (1.2 ghz) with 512 ram and an xtasy grapics card. I play on large maps and the game runs just fine.

i didnt really trust any report or review that gave a game a 90% or more while it didnt see more then juz some trailers or a very brief demo.

Honestly, i cant see how Civ4 (sadly) can score above a 75%

Which only proves it has nothing to do with how new your computer is.

God forbid you might have to hear an opinion different than your own. So I assume if you have a problem with the game at some point, you'll simply quit the forum, never come back, and never discuss it again?

I'm not sure why so many people on this board seem to view discussion of bugs as personal attacks. Look, we know there are bugs in the game...why do so many continue to act like this isn't the case?
