I for one am loving it. Ibwas skepticlenof the art stylenfor a long time, but for some reason tje Hoplites sold me. The civ3 style blends in with the art style of “Zeus: master of Olympus” I was playing alot at the time as well. And what with the city buolding being as it is, is almost like making the impression s studios city building games and merging them with civ 3 and civ 5, too.

Even the game mechanics seem a bit more civ3, though I cant put my finger on why. Maybe its just the art asthetic overpowering everything.

Am I the only one to feel this way?

From what we know so far, to me it feels like the natural evolution of Civ IV with an improved version of a couple features of Civ V.

I played manh Ensemble Studios games, but can't really trace a link with Civ VI.

Yeah, closer to this ^^^^

CIV with 1UPT, and a few other CiV mechanics; and with plenty of new stuff thrown in.
I liked III better than II, but I struggle to see any meaningful comparison to VI, where III is closer than IV or V.

Yeah, it's very much Civ5 but with the complexity (and art style) dialled up to Civ4 levels. Kind of re-imagining Civ4 with Civ5-style mechanics (1UPT and the high importance of the map and geography).

I don't seem that much in Civ 6 that would be unique to civ 3. In fact, I really don't see that much from Civ 4 besides a few things (multiple leaders, changing governments as examples). In feels very much like an extension of Gods and Kings and Brave New World (which makes sense given they share their lead designer) - which were upping the complexity from vanilla civ 5.

I.e. the entire religion and tourism/cultural mechanics were unique from the CIV 5 dlc, not really similar

Leaders are the premier example - Civ 4 leaders for instance were more similar in style of personality and in traits (which were all more generic stat boosters), while Civ 6 seems to be doubling down on the leaders as NPCs approach - more 'personality', very different, unique abilities. Which can be very interesting and lead to very different play styles with different leaders, but laso makes the game much harder to balance potentially.

Ed Beach is doubling down on the modern boardgame aesthetic. Some aspects of Civ 6 seem to go back to the Fantasy Flight boardgame from 2010.

Xen, you are not the only one. Civilization 3 was and still is my favorite. I know a lot of people were not big fans of the third game but it was the first Civ game that I was introduced to and I enjoyed it a great deal. Ai annoys me a lot in that game but not everything can be good in a complex computer program like the Civ games.

Civilization VI does have some "DNA" of Civilization III in it. War weariness returns as a mechanic in the game. Amenities are like "citizen moods" from the third game except they are more complex in presentation and execution.

I would say most of the DNA comes from Civilization iv with most the combat aspects from civilization V, though there are some important aspects of CIV 3 in Civ 6.

More like a Love-child of Civ4 and Civ5 to me.

I think those are the two series I spent most of my gaming time with: civ and the impression games city building series. I'm still sad that the latter is not continued any more.
So if you are right, I just have to love civvi...

The artstyle is kinda similar yeah
To IV, not to III; III has a very realistic art style, and the look of the terrain of III has never been surpassed yet, in my opinion.

I'm answering to the OP not you or anyone else. The artstyle is kinda similar to MoO: Zeus

War wariness never left the series. It was in both IV & V.

Relax...you're entitled to your opinion, and so are they.

War Weariness is not in Civilization V because it was part of the "global happiness" mechanic; It was a quite simplistic implementation.

Anyway, I loved that mechanic in Civilization 3; I know some were annoyed with it. Honestly, it makes the game more "alive" when the citizens seem to respond and you have to act on their concerns. That's also why I like the lenses system; It feels like a SimCity game on a civilization scale.

Simplistic or not, it was there; and being part of the global happiness mechanic (which I too am very glad to see the back of) was a very appropriate place for it.

The colorful rooftops definitely remember Zeus: MoO, which is my least favorite of those city building games exactly because it's too cartoony. It looks like Disney's Hercules, while Emperor: RotMK looks so beautiful.

But I think I'm enjoying Civ VI's looks.

Pharaoh was cartoony as well! Its not for everyone, and indeed I didnt like it in civ6 much at first. But it grew onme. For tje record though, I prefer Caesar 3s looks.
