Hm-m-m, that is part of answer. Tho i rarely go for wonders (too much playing against the AI & their rapid-bild talents). But when 1 starts with Masonry & there is a mountain of stone rite next to starting city... gotta go for it. 
I like to grow slow & start developing cities: hence the large cultural + nice defense zones.
Oh, & i bild forces in a balanced way so as to protect my civs from overly aggressive neighbors.
Seems U have chosen to research, bild settlers, & pop cities without much to protect them.
As the old saying goes:
"Ya makes your choices & ya takes your chances."
I have not agreed to a non-agression for a reason. My early UU's must be put to good use before those around us multiply & overwhelm us. OR share some with us.

Life is a series of tradeoffs & so is Civ. Which is main reason it is SUCH an excellent & enduring game, with 000,000's of possibilities.
