While doing some modding today, I caught this bit of Firaxis commentary in the Lua.

Code:
Audio Parameters
2010 Dominic Cerquetti, Firaxis Games (dcerquetti -at- firaxis -dot- com)

This file defines Audio Parameters used during initilization of Firesound.
Most things in here are rarely modified.

PLEASE NOTE! This version of the file is for PC and 360 ONLY. The PS3 has
a different copy of this file somewhere else. The PS3 MUST be at 48000 HZ or else
badness happens. Please keep them in-sync.

How does one expect to play a Civ game with a gamepad? lol.

Not trying to be negative but, I guess civ 4 was the last deep strategy game they'll make. Looks like dumbed down civ games from here on out. Thanks consoles. Just saying if it does happen.

If that's what it says, it is 100% for sure that 360/PS3 was planned at one time or another. Whether or not they are actually going through with it I suppose we cannot know.

Not necessarily. Firaxis makes games for consoles as well as PC, and where they can re-use code modules across different projects, they will want to do so. Here we have, I am guessing, a bit of in-house audio engine, Firesound, which although debuting in CivV will likely be used in future console projects. The programmer responsible already put in some notes about its cross-platform implementation.

Mind you, I don't know of any great reason why CivV couldn't or shouldn't be ported to current gen consoles. Except that it's still shot through with bugs, and no one seems to like it, obviously.

I remember myself playing civ2 on my snes in the 90s

civ could map to gamepads well enough

bigger problem is that the 12 year old console games really have no interest in strategy games beyond armies killing each other

yeah, civ 5 pretty much went that route the way they implemented it so far, but not nearly enough to attract the kids shopping at gamestop

File types (structure & engine dependant) made compatible with specific "Known" formatting principles reference would be my guess. Devs always have a knack for provisions if only to restrict extensive and useless cross-overs into unforeseen flaws.
Ogg, wav, mp3, midi -- it's a flooded, complex, chaotic realm where a single piano note can be rendered & binarized in a hundred different ways.
Thus, the "Remark slot" by coders.

As to presume for some XBox or PS3 port, your guess is as good as anyone.

Considering how demanding Civ5 is on PCs, I couldn't imagine it running on the consoles, which have significantly lower hardware than recent gaming PCs :p

This. It was very demanding(slow) to play civ2 on my snes ...

PS3 will likely play CiV better than a PC, because the game will be tailored to match the architecture of that specific console whereas with a PC they have to make it compatible with various Windows versions, DirectX versions, graphics cards, CPUs, et cetera.

Reduce every action to what are essentially hotkeys? I wouldn't have thought it would be too difficult to do.

I play the entire game without taking my hand off the mouse. Everything is clickable. Controllers are good at moving cursors around and pushing buttons too. It wouldn't be hard.

Yea, unfortunately this ends up happening to almost every PC game.

Don't try claiming XBox_360 (or *any* other consoles, be they recent or obsolete) is better or worst than any Highly variable configurations of PC.
If anything speed isn't a matter of soldered CPUs & addressable Memory but rather what both are being used for & with.

XBox-360 Specs (back in 2005!)
Current PCs... total chaos, undefined & unknown for any other than yours or mine.

A controller will never be as precise or fast as a mouse is. I really couldnt play without a mouse in a strategy game.

I would like to try and play civilization with Microsoft's Kinect. That would be cool. Just reach out and grab your units and place them where you want. Reach out and tap your city to view/edit. Wave your hand to scroll the screen.

Though I have no desire to play civilization 5 on my XBox. (I do have an XBOX 360) I read an article somewhere that Kinect might eventually be released for PC. When it does, that would be a cool new feature.

Here's your explanation. Until consoles can support modding, I don't think there's any chance of Civ5 on consoles.
