Civ V stock image Scavenger hunt

This thread is a lot of fun.
I've gained a deeper appreciation for the consistent style of the artwork in the game, however it was achieved.
The fact that a recognizable style emerges from an eclectic collection of prior art, of various media, and spanning centuries, is itself meaningful. Think of all the artists and architects whose work is referenced here, and yet another layer of readily identifiable style is present and discernable. That in itself is a laudable accomplishment.

nanotechnology (though i couldn't find a direct gear match, this is in the middle):

The_J, there are only two "buckyball" models that are close. But I think vexing picked the wrong one. ;)

dave, you're right. it's a closer match on three accounts:
the first one has slightly smaller atoms and bonds,
the shading is more defined,
the rotation matches the end result directly.

This is my photo that it was actually based on:

i guess that's a joke, but i'm far too literal. so... the one resident mario posted originally is a 1:1 match, flipped horizontally. the twisting of the cable makes it apparent

interestingly they're both photos of the same computer:

props to the guy who made that.

Not a joke. Those are my photos of my original work. I suppose the original photo is a better match when flipped.

awesome, cool stuff. how do you feel about your work being used as the base for the artwork in civ?

It's very cool to have my work in my favorite computer game but at the same time disappointing to not get credit. Just because I publish my photos on the Internet doesn't mean I give up copyright. As evidenced in this thread, changing original art slightly doesn't really fool anyone. It only makes you look like a dick.

Thanks guys! I got a chance to display Unidyne (the basis for the Civ icon) at the Exploratorium in San Francisco last Feb. Here it is with a sample of some of my other work. It is my hobby. I don't do this as a business.

As far as wooden computers go...we used to put TVs and radios in wooden boxes. Why not computers? It is a mature technology.

I spoke to mr. Stephenson this afternoon, had no idea he was made of pure awesomeness or that he played Civ 5 untill now!.

I've began tracking more of the pictures to their original owners, here's a bit of a rundown of the pictures I've tracked so far:

FSUXX9EFB11KYDW.MEDIUM.jpg

http://www.instructables.com/file/FSUXX9EFB11KYDW/

This one belongs to a DIY website, and it's protected by Creative Commons, which basically allows you to modify it, provided you mention the original author (I've checked, and it is not featured within the game credits).

Fort Ross is under Creative Commons, to quote the wikipedia rules of use:

You are free:

* to share – to copy, distribute and transmit the work
* to remix – to adapt the work

Under the following conditions:

* attribution – You must attribute the work in the manner specified by the author or licensor (but not in any way that suggests that they endorse you or your use of the work).
* share alike – If you alter, transform, or build upon this work, you may distribute the resulting work only under the same or similar license to this one.

I could not find the name of this man (user:introvert?) on the credits, not even on the Thank You part of the credits.

rbv0130003.jpg

These 3 belong to Stockphoto houses, again, I could not find a single photohouse being sourced within the credits (I'll have to double check those credits again to be extra sure, yay...). All I could find was a PR firm, but not much else. The Toysoldiers picture actually allows usage, but then again, you have to source the original.

The cost of purchase of any of these images to use as in Civ V?:

An average of 35 dollars and crediting the Stockphoto house or the Author (even if it's Public Domain, please source the original artist), royalty free. Come on Firaxis, that's pocket money from a few DLCs and a few intern hours to type the names of the original authors!
