Civ VII Weekly Reveal Guessing Thread

It looks like this is from the Age of Antiquity, which would be quite early for the Crimean Tatars; not to mention that the Tatars have more obvious city names like (Eski) Qırım/Solkhat or Bağçasaray, or even Sarai if going for something Tatar but not specifically Crimean.

As others have stated, the Scythians could have Neapolis, and the Cimmerians could have Panticapaeum. Syvash does show up on the Wiki page for the Huns, however - maybe it's them?

Ok another thing, if I'm not mistaken the name of the cities tend to be in the their endonyms at the time (if know of course), right? What's etymology of Syvash?

It's from turkish languages (through Crimean Tatars most likely) and means "dirty" or "rotten". It's also often called "rotten" in Ukranian. There's also a settlement with the same name, but it's very small and quite recent (about 150 years).

Honestly, I have zero idea why it was chosen

What about the city of Maste, where the wool comes from? According to Google, it's a village in Montenegro.

Maybe IPs have some city names that are specific to surrounding terrain? So Slavs* next to a swamp (or Wet Grassland or whatever the equivalent is) call their city Syvash, but Slavs* next to a call it Montenegro? Probably a stretch, but it’s a fun thought.

*I know nothing of the geography & culture of these places and I can’t be bothered to look it up on a phone

Abbasid reveal up... many of us already out.

We already have our guess what FXS want to introduce some exploration age roster before showing exploration gameplay.
True, but then they could always add Persia plus an exploration one like they did last week. I think they may be waiting for some date, or wait until a later week when they reveal the leader (maybe there is a persia leader that has a persona, but as they just revealed one which also has a persona, want to give it a bit of a pause between the next).

I've abandoned hope for a Persian leader, much as I want one. :(

Well, different from civs where we nailed most of them already, there is still lots of leaders we don't know, so I still think it can go either way. But just a random though, I'm not particularly rooting for specific leaders. And on civ, would just want an eventual full path japan, just to play once and go back to random mix and match shenanigans.

Persia is a lie... (I know we got it confirmed, but curious why they're holding it up).
My suspicion is that Persia needed a significant change, so they delayed it until it could be tested out.

Given we've had mostly Antiquity associated leaders, I wouldn't be surprised if the "associated leader" for Persia is going to be an Exploration leader associated with the Abbasid Caliphate. Whichever it is, we'll probably see on Thursday.

I see three possibilities for Thursday/Friday:
1) an Abbasid leader, with or without Persia
2) Persia and a Persian leader
3) Hawaiians and a Hawaiian leader (as this comes next in alphabetical order following Abbasids and Chola)

Well done @stealth_nsk , @Eagle Pursuit , and @Siptah !
Based on magic of alphabetical order, I expect:
  • Persia (finish with antiquity)
  • Amina (first exploration-focused leader)
  • Abbasids (first exploration age civ, plus they are mentioned as potential historical path for Egypt, which was one of the first reveals)

I think it's definitely worth considering that they might have skipped Persia for behind-the-scenes reasons. If that's the case, we may not see it for a while. And they may have picked Chola for late last week because it corresponds better with Ashoka-WR than the Abbasids would.

This week, I'm expecting the Abbasids and/or Songhai and Amina. The blurb on Steam didn't provide a timeframe or quantity, only "more civs", which might mean multiple civs in one week or multiple civs over multiple weeks.

I‘m going with Abbasids.

Expansionist + Scientist
Starting bias: floodplains
CUU: unique scientists
MUU: Hujariyya
Wonder: Bayt al Hikmah
UBs: Madrasa and some form of Mosque (Abbasid mosques are pretty unique with their large hypostyle halls and open squares, but I don’t know any official name for that style) to form a „university“ kind of district (although Iranian civs would be better suited for this to make a Registan UD).
Civics: something that gives bonuses from ancient codices.

For the leader, I think there is one paired with the Abbasids: al-Mamun. We‘ll see him and his rough desert starting bias this week. He‘ll be cultural and scientist.

I think I'm going to change my Norse/Persia bet for a two-way split:

* Abbasid leader (which based on Abbasids/House of Wisdom will be Al-Rashid) and Persia (maybe double-leader reveal with Zarathustra)

* Ming, Songhai, Spain, and possibly Byzantium or Swahili with a Byzantine/Swahili leader by end of week.

I don't really care about additional details, neither of these predictions will be particularly exciting to me outside of a new explo civ upset.

So below bet is void. :)

Norse (maybe Persia)
Valknut (if Persia, Lamassu)
Heddal Stave Church (if Persia, Gate of All Nations)
Cnut (if Persia, Zarathustra)
Red on Blue (if Persia, Maroon on Purple)
Leader type: Military/Expansionist (if Zarathustra, Scientific/Expansionist)
I'm also going to predict that the Cnut RL comes with a teaser for the Normans, or the Zarathustra FL comes with a teaser for the Sasanid civ.
