1750BC – 1500BC
War! The ancient world echoes with the thunder of battle!
Military
(all these wars are still ongoing…
Ulak-Altyn war
Upon the ascendancy of Taralyk-Khanal to the Golden Throne (sometime around 1750BC), the growing powers of Altyn-Kanalat and the Ulak peoples entered into an era of bitter conflict… A great host of Utrigurk warriors under Taralyk-Khanal himself was joined by veteran mercenaries from the east (Argosian hoplites and charioteers, and also some bowmen from faraway Karion lands). The Ulak city of Talulak was caught unprepared, its weak defence easily overcome.
But the outraged Ulak quickly retaliated, and Taralyk-Khanal was caught by surprise as a large force of Ulak charioteers worked their way down through the mountains...
The battle that followed was the most brutal and bloody ever seen in the world… at the end of it, the Ulak army was decimated, never to recover for centuries to come, though Taralyk-Khanal was also wounded in the battle, and was never the same again.
The Altyn-Kanalat forces went on to take the desert city of Ghulaman, but only after a gruelling march through the desert, and an even more gruelling siege against tough opposition and constant harassment by Ulak charioteers.
Much Ulak land had now been captured, and in the years that followed, several new cities were also founded. By the time of Taralyk-Khanal’s death, Altyn-Kanalat was the largest empire on the face of the earth (though not the most populous, or the most developed – those titles remained with Argos).
Argos-Kariona war
The conflict between the Argosian and Karion empires continued in the same on/off fashion, as it had done for centuries. But by 1750 BC, the Argosian forces had become much better organised, and were able to break the long-standing stalemate. Argosian troops finally managed to take Oryx, though the Karionian defence was so fierce that the city was completely destroyed. The western Mediterranean was now firmly under Argosian control.
Amongst the ruins, the Argosians built a new city named Terrisandria, after their great general Terrisander. Things were looking good as Terisander’s men went on to take Edfu, and began pillaging the area around Kairona itself...
But Terisander was killed in battle near the enemy capitol, as a vast army of African mercenaries suddenly descended upon the Argosian forces. Although the Karionians own forces had been decimated, their bottomless treasury was able to pay for thousands upon thousands of fresh African troops.
After a century of back-and-forth fighting, Edfu was in Kairon hands once again, and Terisander had been completely destroyed, a blow to the Argosian morale…
Fighting took place at sea, too. Islands were not safe from the fighting. Rhodes in particular was continually attacked, but managed to hold firm.
Almoth-Zekul war
Almoth had spent the past few centuries building up its fighting potential. In the centuries after 1750BC, hordes of well-armed Almothian warriors descended upon the lands of Zekul to the north east. Foreign mercenaries joined in the campaigns. The Zekulian peoples put up a brave fight, but the Almothian warriors seemed unstoppable under a succession of powerful warrior-queens. Almothian forces razed Zekuliera to the ground sometime around 1600BC, taking large numbers of prisoners and slaves from the region.
The Zekul capitol of Zekulamuton survived several sieges, but around 1550BC it fell to the legendary Almothian general, Aran Brighthelm (OOC: the first actual leader to emerge in the game, who later went on to inspire a *heroic epic*). A train of slaves and loot was taken back to High Almoth. The Zekul peoples remain independent in the west, with three main cities, which are scattered but well-defended.
Argos-Almoth war
In 1500BC, This war has only just begun…
It started when large Argosian forces crossed the border, hunting Karion pirates and mercenaries who were sheltering in Almoth lands. Recent volcanic eruptions had also displaced many small towns and villages on both sides of the border, causing devestation and confusion about who should pay tribute to whom…
Argos has already pulled most of its troops out of Kairon lands, and has attacked Denton with strong forces, while most of the Almothian warriors are still in the north east...
Taejon - Yaktan war
The cities of Iri Hieju and Sia Teaga rebelled against the emerging centralist leadership. They immediately formed an alliance with Yaktan in the east, and war was inevitable… The bulk of the fighting has been between the western Taejon cities, with the tough ‘Flag Spear’ soldiers on both sides. The peasants have also been brutally repressed on both sides, leading to a sharp decline in the urban population. It seems history may be repeating, with the Taejon region in decline once again…
Meanwhile, Yaktan chariots raid from the east. In more recent times, Yaktan warriors have taken to riding directly on horseback, an idea which seems to be catching on fast…
