Civ7 now includes Denuvo

The read of this thread has been interesting (learning about current state of DRM software, for example), at least until it devolved into some pretty silly attempts to justify contrarian positions.

But I am reminded once again of the fact that people who post in forums like this (true fans of the games, it must be said!) don't seem to realize just how SMALL a portion they are of the overall universe of players of the games.

Civ VI sold over 11 MILLION copies. 1 Million of those sold in the first month after release. The vast, Vast, VAST majority of those sales were to people who never will be bothered about things like DRM kernel access, or any of the other objections raised here. They simply boot up the 'puter or console, select the game, and hit install, followed by play, and don't think anything of what's going on behind the curtain. I know, because some 20+ years ago, I was one of those people.* But, while they won't think of those things, they might well think nothing of trying to pirate the game to their friends.** So I have very little belief that software companies selling games that have sales at the level of Civ VI worry too much about the economic impact of super-fans deciding that a DRM effort will keep them from buying the game. It's the sort of thing much more effective with smaller game companies and less well-established game series.

Which doesn't mean that someone who feels that way shouldn't not buy the game. Just don't expect a huge positive reaction to the effort to overturn what is clearly a well-researched financial decision by the game's publisher.

* EU II is what woke me up and introduced me to the world of true game fandom available on line. All because I wanted to see if there was a patch/upgrade one day...

** I used to teach high school (math). It was shocking to me how many of my students were quite blase about pirating music, games, etc.

AH, they're NOT the same type of games? Midnight Sun was made by the same team of Xcom and you can basically define Xcom with superheroes.....
Xcom with superheros was the problem It seems not many Xcom players were interested in that.

There needs to be strong pushback against this. Customer campaigns have convinced developers to abandon DRM like Denuvo before, and we should do the same for Civ VII. We know Firaxis reads these forums; let’s make this post so visible that they can’t help but notice.

I don’t care if this is coming from their corporate overlords. Firaxis needs to go to bat for its fans on this one.
I already removed the game from my Steam Wishlist. Hopefully if they see a sudden drop in Wish-listing of the game after this announcement, perhaps it will force a change. To be fair to Firaxis, I feel certain this move is coming from 2K....one of the crappier publishers currently out there (barely beaten out by EA or Ubisoft).

Oh 2K, you shouldn't be doing something bad to your customers... I am so disappointed.
I know you're probably being sarcastic but.....are you new here? :D

"They" refers to denuvo.
Hey Dale. Can I just say......I LOVE Old World.

the blatant microtransactions including the fog of war tiles ROFL now you are getting punished for purchasing the game.
Sorry, what's this about "microtransactions including the fog of war tiles"?!?!

  • Founders Content Pack, which includes:
    • 2 leader personas
    • 4 profile customizations
    • 1 fog of war tile set
    • 1 Founders palace skin
Oh FFS. Seriously, the sooner Firaxis breaks ties with 2K and either self-publishes or at least move to a more consumer-friendly publisher, the better for everyone.

FYI, you can quote multiple things in one post by clicking the "+Quote" button in the lower-right of a post, and then "Insert Quotes" below the reply box (as I did here). Multiple short replies in quick succession can be considered spam, as it's a common technique used by those seeking to reach the top of the Post Count list.

"microtransactions" is a hyperbole. There's an alternative fog-of-war graphic that's part of... the Founder's Edition? Or is it the Deluxe Edition? Or as a pre-order bonus? At any rate, it's part of something that isn't the base game. But there are no indications that there's going to be in-game microtransactions like in some of the casual free-to-play games that have given "microtransactions" a bad reputation.

It would be awesome if someone like Hooded Horse were the publisher. I don't buy enough 2K games to know their general tendencies (pretty much only Civ, really), but they're definitely one of the big-suit publishers.

I only want to mention it was really classy to wait only ~9 days after preorders became available to attach this information.
Belief that execs are always doing well-researched decisions... well, naive. They often follow trends with a little to no long-term concerns. Heck, somebody at 2K can even have ties with a company that creates Denuvo or there are indirect profits we don't know about.
This trend is bad for consumers. Not only it hits the performance (no matter how much or little) and after all, consumers are the one who pay for this great feature.

We already know that multiplayer has issues with performance (puny amount of players). Looking forward to confirmation about single player's standard amount of players.

They are the ones that charged full price for the massively inferior GTA Trilogy Definitive Edition-and took the cheaper, superior version out of the online store to force people to purchase the downgrade. They are the publisher that are behind the near full-price port (not update, remaster or remake) of the original Red Dead Redemption. They are the publisher that utterly botched the marketing of Marvels Midnight Sun and they are the publisher behind the annual basketball games that are massively overpriced, and chockfull of microtransactions and un-skippable in-game adverts. Oh, and they're notorious for issuing take-downs of YouTube content relating to the games they publish-regardless of if they meet "fair use" criteria.

They're really getting competitive with Electronic Arts for most hateable gaming company business practices.

My wife's plan was to buy this for me on release. I just told her to NOT buy Civ VII until I give her the green light.

This really sucks. I have purchased every Civ on release starting with Civ III. It's a real shame the guys in charge have such little interest in their loyal customers.

You know what's funny? that Irdeto (those who created Denuvo) are the ex-Securom (does this name remind you of anything?) and that they are under Sony control and curiously NO Playstation games etc... (like God of War) have DENUVO incorporated, Curious right?

Xcom with superheros was the problem It seems not many Xcom players were interested in that.

Well on the contrary in my opinion a game with an IP like that of Marvel should have had more charm than Xcom, in short my father knows who Spider-Man, Iron Men, Hulk etc. are... but if you tell him Xcom at most he thinks whether it's a new cell phone
