Civilization 7 Announcement and Teaser Trailer

Because of modern cancel culture and other craziness, Firaxis probably wont risk too much chosing leaders.

Today even Abraham Lincoln and Washington contraversial for some people.

colonialism too much (let's live in the present
i have bad news... :shifty:

but anyways...
I wonder what is the 33% new this time and makes our speculation moot on that area due to drastic changes...
The 33% changed could have the biggest ramifications for me.

I just don't know how much new stuff they can add... we've already done a granular recreation of the Industrial Revolution, with power sources and global warming and suburbanization and all, we've done espionage, we've done the World Congress, we've chosen individual beliefs for Religions, we've done resource trading, border policies, support units, air combat... there's a lot of fairly small side systems in Civ 6.

There are a couple of new mechanics I can think of, though:
  • supply lines/logistics system
  • conscripts/professionals split for military units
  • map, tech, and civic trading
  • resource production chains (which i don't want frankly but hey, it would be new)
  • automation within your government (we have governors that do nothing- the immortal god-leader still has to micromanage it all! what kind of Democracy is my Civ running?!!)
If these have appeared before, let me know

In addition to the issue with post-WW2 leaders, I'm not sure how Mandela leading the Xhosa would be received. I'm more separate from my South African past than I would like to be and so may be missing something, but despite Mandela definitely being Xhosa, he put in a lot of effort to lead a racially and tribally unified South Africa. With recent events in the country intentionally inflaming Xhosa-Zulu tensions, putting a figure like Mandela as the leader of only the Xhosa might not go down well.
Ah, that ought to do it.

So, do we know any notable Shona leaders, then?

Tamar of Georgia is still this forum's greatest accomplishment. Eventhough it could never have been Tamar in that leader poster (it didn't align alphabetically), several people insisted, loudly that it HAD to be Tamar, over and over and over again.

Then the first expansion pack of Civ 6 hits, and BOOM. Tamar is part of the line-up.

Crusader Kings III's latest dev diary just advised us that Tamar is coming to CK3 as one of the bookmarked suggested playable characters for their new 1178 start date. The dev notes that Tamar's appointment by her father as his intended successor in 1178 is one of the reasons they chose 1178 as their newest start date.

This forum's impact has expanded beyond Civ! (In fairness, Paradox might well have found and highlighted Tamar on their own, but her appearance - and popularity - in Civ 6 may well have pointed them the way.)

Has someone been able to isolate the accents of each of the narrators in the trailer? They could offer hints to the Civilizations included?

Yeah, I did that. One of the women is Scottish. Like, Mary, Queen of Scots?

I'd say they are more likely 5 Advisors than 5 Leaders.

Same with Georgia's inclusion in AoE2, complete with a Tamar-centric campaign.

No offense to you EP, but that argument is SUCH a stretch, and you know it. (but repeat it often enough and we can Bloody Mary into Civ like we did with Tamar)

I wouldn't read too much into the teaser - it suggests very little (other than heavily implying Cleo is the Egyptian leader) and we'll have our first bit of gameplay in less than two months. Good things happen to those who are patient :)

I agree, that's the breaking point for the "the voices are leaders" theory. But having 5 very different voices in it is significant. In Civ 6, we had two voices in the trailer. One was Sean Bean. The other was for the daughter, whose small role in the game was as advisor.

This.

I realize there's nothing else to analyze for more than a month yet, but past trailers have never been indicative of the specific things that we would see in the actual game.

Eh, not quite.

Things that appeared in the Civ 6 trailers:

Base Game trailer:
Colossus wonder
Great Wall unique tile improvement
Winged Hussars (Poland, 1st paid DLC)
America, as seen from space

Rise and Fall trailer:
Seondeok and Korea
Mongols
Georgia (this one's kind of subtle. The defenders of the wall have traditional Khevsurati tunics)
Statue of Liberty wonder
Netherlands (complete with a map of Amsterdam and a WW2 era radio representing Wilhelmina)

Gathering Storm trailer:
World Congress
Mt. Vesuvius natural wonder
Disasters
Inca
Kupe and the Maori
Canals district
Wind Generators tile improvement
Sea Barriers tile improvement
Seasteads tile improvement

I'd say the trailers are relatively good indicators of what we will see.

One woman sounds a bit Chinese. Another is clearly Scottish. One man sounds "Egyptian" to me for the lack of a better word. And another man sounds like a Western American cowboy.

Yeah, the American had a somewhat exaggerating Texas accent.

The only reason why I'm leaning towards the Maya over the Aztecs in the base game.

I want to add that the last quote I believe came from the Mayan Book, and the actor saying said quote reminded me of Pacal in Civ 5.

The showcase will take place in August. I really don't think they will permit the marketing campaign to stretch OVER a full year. I think Q1 2025 is the most likely, barring further delays.
I agree, but there's also been a lot of those types of predictions. I remember when the "hot off the presses" initial announcement had us all thinking a 2023 or early 2024 release date, and when the trailer "leak" meant that we would get gameplay reveals immediately after. Hopefully you're right though
