Civilization 7 Announcement and Teaser Trailer

Q4 2025? So like 14-16 months after the full reveal in August? I don't know, unless the game isn't as finished as we think (but then why would they tease it now and announce the full reveal for August?), I can't see such a huge gap between its announcement and release. My guess is ~6 months after the full reveal in August (when I expect the preorders to go live), so around February (both Civ 6's expansions were launched in February)/March. Maybe it's just wishful thinking.
Civ VI was announced in Spring (May?) and in the announcement trailer a release date that Oct.
Also with a pretty specific date.

With Civ VII all we got was "2025" 😆

The showcase will take place in August. I really don't think they will permit the marketing campaign to stretch OVER a full year. I think Q1 2025 is the most likely, barring further delays.

I'm surprised people report being disappointed by how few game play mechanics the trailer revealed.

In addition to the feature I've already mentioned of the city's forum gradually adding statues of its great people, I was pleased to see
  • spherical map
  • unit stacking up to five
  • standard number of builder charges as five
  • road trajectory set by unit movement
  • first person shooter mode
  • new victory condition of keeping a multi-cultural society in harmony rather than civil strife
  • Patrick Stewart as narrator
I'm sure I may have missed some, but these seem to me to be quite significant reveals.

You mean like 2K's Rockstar? 😆
(Re: GTA6)

Firaxis is under new management.
New CEO.

There were layoffs and departures. Clearly there is some re-focus going on. And a refocus on Friaxis bread basket - Civ.
They announce the game earlier than they would have under previous management.

I think that gives an indication of timescales.

Rockstar is under Take Two, not 2K. And the marketing for the next GTA hasn't really begun. They had a teaser trailer similar to what we just saw, but they aren't actively revealing anything else.

Q1 2025 does actually seem reasonable for release, right? They can't leave hype to cool down too much after the initial announcement, surely.

I kind of like how Civ 7 is already breaking tradition/expectations/etc.
Games don't generally release in the first quarter. If they miss the push for the holiday season, they're usually so far from finished that they take a deep breath and release some time around midyear, at the earliest. I have no idea what their target is, but I wouldn't be surprised if it was Q4.

But even if the planned date is Jan 1 2025, that's almost seven months from now. No hype lasts that long.

Games can always get delayed, but it doesn't feel like Civ is the kind of game that gets out of hand with scope and one doesn't know how long it will take. If I had to guess I'd just point to "H1 2025".

more likely that civ vii would be released before summer, then
not wise to release two major console games

But then maybe that makes it a little marketing sweet-spot: few competitors.

(Grasping at straws)

These aren't reveals, they are wild guesses :p

Not sure I buy that as a general rule. There are tons of games, including AAA titles like Zelda, that release in Q1 of years.

It seems reasonable to me. My guess is February or March. That would be about 6 months from the August reveal. More than 6 months of active content dropping (which is longer than Civ 6 did) would really be a long cycle of marketing and I think would risk burning out the audience and killing hype.

Why is december 2024 out off calculation

3-4 months of First Look videos and hype, release before New year.

P.S. Ah, yeah stupid question ... 2025 in trailer, so earliest january, after holiday season

Getting grittier vibes from this. Let's hope they've moved away from the pixar/mobile app art style. Not getting my hopes up about gameplay though. I've learned that lesson. I want to see something different and innovative.

Been meaning to ask:

How long before the game was teased for 6 before we saw the E3 Gameplay Trailer?

I don't know the exact numbers, but I remember that the first several weeks contained absolutely no more information, then we were fed very little details via some interviews etc, and it too like 1,5-2 months after announcement to get something more tangible

I quoted Larana’s post above which is quite detailed. The game was announced then we got more info 2 weeks later.

Also, I think we had multiple screenshots on day one.

In short, this Civ 7 rollout is slower.

I really hope we get First Look: Rome, Egypt etc etc videos again, they were such fun way to announce new civilizations...
The way they did it for the Leader Pass wasn't as good though.
