Civilization III Fixes (PLEASE READ)

When i start any game and as soon as I build my first city the game sais there was a error and will close.... So basically i cant play civ 3 :( :( ANY HELP WOULD BE APPRICIATED AND PLEASE TRY TO MAKE IT SOON IM DYIN TO PLAY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!:D

Game running along smoothly. Then in 1090, I get to the end of my turn, hit the end turn button, and then I crash to the desktop with an invalid page fault in Civilization.exe

I've tried all sorts of drivers, have upgraded to Win XP Pro, and tried doing different things before the end of the turn -- nothing is preventing me from getting this error, however, and I cannot continue my game.

This also happened in a previous game of mine.

This is happening with Patch 1.29f. I have never had any problems before this patch.

I've attached my save game file -- if someone could load it and see if it works on their computer, then we know it's a problem with my computer and not the save game file or the patch itself.

I know that, compared to other bugs in this thread, this is fairly minor.

Anyways, when I load Civ3, the opening movie plays fine (i.e. displays smoothly), but the sound stutters. Also, during game play, there are various artifacts that I can hear repeatedly. The artifacts can be fixed by fiddling with the PCI latency timer in the bios, but the stuttering in the opening movie is still there.

I have that latest patch for the game (1.29f I think).

I have the GeForce4 Ti 4200 with the latest omega drivers and the SB Audigy Platinum with the latest audigy drivers.

As I said above, I have tried fiddling with the PCI latency timer, but that doesn't affect anything with the intro movie.

I am running WinXP Pro.

The opening movie plays fine on my older computer (PII 266 w/ WinMe).

Any tips would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks!

When I attempt to play Civ III, it freezes at the Infogrames Logo Screen. Once it made it to the Firaxis Logo Screen before it froze. Please help!!!

This isn't a severe problem, but is certainly not convenient.

You know when you put the mouse over a 'hyperlink' which leads to the civilopedia and it turns into a hand? (Or atleast the manual says it does that) Well my cursor doesn't! It just disappears until I move it away from the link. I look in the Civ3/Art/ Directory and founf the cursors image, but the hand wasn't in there! There were four empty spaces. I think one is meant to have the hand. Could someone please send me their cursors file (actually called Cursor.pcx in the Art directory) to fix this?

Hi all

I had the original version 1.07
I only installed an optical mouse for my PC
Eversince, Civ3 crashed and my PC rebooted by a simple mouse movement. All other games work perfectly fine.
Going back to my old mechanical mouse solved the problem.

Any luck here?
Thx

I too have an optical mouse (IntelliMouse Explorer from MS) and Civ3 frequently locks up on me, or will just go really really slow while playing the game. Then after a few moments, everything is back to normal. I'm wondering if Firaxis' has a problem with their implementation of DirectX calls that involve optical mice AND with the copyright protection schemes on the Civ3 CDROM? Maybe the DirectX calls get mangled by those two freakin' piece of crap "copyright protection" files that are checked against the Civ3 CDROM. I really hate all this copyright BS. Why not go after the real pirates - the Chinese - and leave us Americans who pay for our products alone. Geez!!!

First of all, thank you Scotie and Dan for your help on this forum.

I've downloaded de latest patch, v.29f I think, but after installing It, when I try tu run the game, I get a "game CD" error, like I didn't have the CD placed on the CD driver. I own an original copy, and the PC is a brand new P4, with a LG DVD drive.

I thing it might have something to do with my copy being spanish. Is the patch only designed for the US version of the game?

Does anyone know anything about this?

Thank you very much.

When i try to load a scenario it goes perfectly fine until the dialogue box saying what your civilizations is eg; Militaristic and Scientific and the free techs the game crashes without any warnings or error messages, plz help me

I have had the same problem with the game crashing listing an IPF at 0167 (win98se) dating back to when i first baught the game last January 2001. Tech support has been hurrendous in helping and quite frankly im sick of them. They always say the same thing, ie. update this update that, blah blah blah..its all BS! Nothing worked so i gave up. Then the new Patches came out i had new hope..guess what..still crashes at the end of my turn after my cities produce. So i decided to load the game on my other computer...WOW you know what..it crashed in the same way after like 100 turns at the end of a turn. I called tech support and told them..they said did you upgrade this n that? What BS! I have the same crash on 2 different computers completely in 2 different games in 2 different years! Both after like 100 turns or more.
Well i upgraded to win 2000 pro Uninstalled civ. Installed the brand new cd they sent me for 10 dollars installed the latest 1.29 patch.(yes all the latest drivers!) Played a brand new game(since the old saves crashed still!) and guess what? A crash back to the desktop in the year 290 BC after over 100 turns. Tech support asked all the same friggin questions! I asked them to load my game and run it sent them the game sav file and my rules. HE hasnt done it yet..claims he has been very busy with other problems...hmm...seems to me tech support cant help with anything thats actually technical? The problem is a poorly written editor and the game was sold before the bugs were out of it?
Anyway I have an excellent game id like to be able to finish but cant! How frustrating. Been getting the same TEch run around for 9 Months..they cant help?
This crash is back to Windows 2000 Desktop at the end of a turn. I am posting after reading of the SAME problem some of you are having. It seems to me we all have Athlons and most of US have the Nvidia too..Is that the problem? Or is the game flawed?

I have the same problem. I hit the Civ icon, and a pop-up error appears like the CD is not in the drive.
The game starts eventually when I open/close cd drive repeatedly and launch the game from the autorun off the CD.
still, would be nice to click once and have it run.

Also, first thing the game does it automatically change my resolution. It that what it should do?

thanks

Thanks Sk0tie for your help here.

Just wondering are you aware of any patch that InfoGames are working on to fix issues with GameSpy? According to GameSpy tech support

"I have checked with the programmers, the game maker has failed to implemenmt
the proper technology. At this time, the game is not playable on GameSpy Arcade
until they have made further changes.

Christine Henderson
GameSpy Customer Service-Technical Support
http://www.gamespy.com"

btw ... I think the game is great. I am not having issues with the game except for the occassional sound blip. I can live with it. However when I tried to host a game on GameSpy it crashed Windows XP SP1 and took a while to recover.

I do not have any of the issues which the above users have. But, did you guys INSTALL the damn drivers that came w/ the mouse? If you did Uninstall them. In my experiance the Drivers designed for this mouse have messed up my system performance and functionality. To use the mouse simply plug it in, and let your computer Plug & play with defualt drivers. this solved many of my issues with the mouse, includeing a similar one. This advice is based of experiance from about 8 months ago.

Recently, (about a month before PTW came out) I re-installed Civ3, and I noticed I could let the Governor Keep track of City mood status for the first time ever. Woo! So I began using it, and was VERY satisfied with the results. HOWEVER Civ3 PTW has a BUG in this Governor Feature!!

Bug Description:

Randomly, the Civ3 PTW Governor will allow a City to go into Civil Disorder, it doesn't happen to often, but it happens at least 20 or 30 times per game I have played.

Not ONLY does it let the City go into Civil Disorder, it KEEPS the city in this state, instead of changing the population to take it OUT of civil disorder.

The ONLY way to get the city back to non-civil disorder status, is to lick the city in the city screen & say "yes let me manually manage this city" or w/e, once you do, click the city again, and as norrmally happens when you do this all the citizens pop to the right locations.

After that you may turn the governor back on, and it will function properly again. Please fix this most annoying bug.

**update** I have had the governor switch the city back to a Civil Dissorder citizen layout after doing this, twice on my capital city.

ALSO

Could we get a patch to add a "Build Military Improvements" option to the production manager of the City Governor? That would be nice, the City Governor will never build them otherwise. (e.g. Barracks, SAMS, coastal fortress etc.)

One more thing, WHY WHY WHY does my governor INSIST on trying to replace my nice non-polluting, Solar Plants with COAL plants and Nuclear plants?! I do NOT understand this; could you make a flag system to specify when a improvement should not be replaced, or to show an order of worth? So that a coal plant would be ranked say a hydro plant or a solar plant?. tnx! ~Q

I tried disabling the 3rd party applications, but it did not work. I still cannot load the game properly. Please let me know if there is anything else I can do. Email me at Bprax@aol.com.

I installed AOL 8 and it fixed ALL of the problems I was having. This is nice because you can pick up the AOL 8 cds for free at Home Depot. So the fix was easy and free. Life is good.

I have been playing a Large all-civ Chieftain (yes I suck) game. The game gets slower and slower the farther I get into the game until I can (and do) bring up a Game Boy Advance to play while certain things are loading! AND I'M NOT TALKING ABOUT BETWEEN-TURN TIMES!!! THIS IS IN MY TURN:mad:! It all came to a head when I tried to save and the game froze!
