Civilization IN SPACE!

Here is what I discovered: any lvl 3 ship can obtain extra MP. Check promotion tree often, for planning your desired benefits!

Ah yes, I really love going down that path with Scouts. The Brotherhood can probably get it right out of the gate with not too much effort.

So do we get like, workers or whatever in this mod? do we improve anything but star systems and/or are there the equivalent of roads or no?

The equivalent of workers in FF+ aren't as useful as the true workers of a normal civ game. Sadly improvements are made through hammer productions and are unpillage-able IIRC. Those "spacecraft workers" are only useful for stellar systems connection and star base constructions. Nothing else.

A real shame asteroids weren't scattered around a stellar system for "chopping" ability. Or something else useful.
The FF engine is really restricted in game choices compared to the base game or other mods.

Improvements in the sense of boosting yields are replaced by buildings like Mining or Nutrition Facilities which are placed on planets. In fact every newly founded Star System starts with each for free on its home planet.

There are Construction Ships available with Planetary Construction or whatever it's name is, the tech that also enables the Pacifism civic. Warp- (Roads) and Jump- (Railroads) Lanes are in fact even more important than in the base game considering there are no alternative ways to connect Systems and resources like Rivers or Seas. They also build Extraction Facilities to connect resources found in space, Sensor Stations and Starbases.

Beware that Construction Ships and the things they can build are enabled by different techs, so it is very possible to build one only to find that it can't construct anything at all if you haven't researched Light Craft Manufacturing (I think) by then.

You forget the hooking up of resources.

Agree on the Asteroid chopping part, that should definitely be added.

Well well well what do we have here:

I hail the unidentified ship. (Actually it's New Earth, but in-character I don't know that yet, check your e-mail gpcii.)

Regarding Construction Ships I looked up the tech tree:

Planetary Construction enables building these units, Orbital Engineering enables Starbases, Sensor Stations and Warp Lanes, Light Craft Manufacturing enables Extraction Facilities and Space Elevator enables Jump Lanes.

"New Earth, so so, I am completely perplexed that those momma's boys even survived one day without the PDE holding their hand, let alone two years. Still, I see no reason to needlessly antagonizing them, so... wait, is this thing still on?"

But wait, there is more:

"We have finally come across something noteworthy. Yesterday the FS Isis picked up strange radio waves, and first assumed it to be interferences from the huge Radiation Cloud in front of us. While they do come from that direction, our scanners determined that they actually originate several lightyears behind where we assume the cloud ends. Furthermore my communications officer, Lieutenant Miller, discovered a pattern in them and thinks that they might very well be a sign of civilization. I have decided to set course to the source of this phenomenon to find out if there truly is advanced life before us, be it another colony, Earth herself or maybe even an alien race altogether.
Unfortunately our charts show no short way around the radiation cloud that wouldn't lead us too close to a supernova, which means we will have to fly right through it. Even at the thinnest part we still have to penetrate a whole parsec of dangerous radiation to get to the other side. Nevertheless I have come to the conclusion that it is worth the risk, and after hearing back from the Forge I got green light. Captain Smith out."

Roleplaying and story writing is encouraged for this game btw.

On average, it takes 1 week turn around with this game, too long for my biological RAM to stay active and produce a story with continuation.

Also would you please consider using spoilers for your text to stay within the default width? I need to do lot's of left-right scrolling otherwise :whew:

Does the planet with rings have any advantages, or its a pure art-effect?

That's no excuse. Just do short write-ups like I did when something of interest happens.

No. :p

AFAIK the only effect is that it is necessary for the Great Rings Park wonder.
Moons OTOH enable the Moonbase building which slightly increases Research and adds an additional population slot on its planet, however the pop assigned to that one does not provide any food.

When determining the quality of a star system for the purpose of settling it, there are five things to keep in mind:

Number of Planets - Duh, the more the better.
Size of Planets - All planet types come in three sizes and it is most times better to cram as much population as possible onto a small number of big planets rather than spreading them around because yields are improved by buildings, and obviously building one Mining Facility to boost one three pop planet is way cheaper than building three Mining Facilities to boost three one pop planets.
Features - Moons, Resources and to a small extent Rings are always good to have. Also the type of planets that are in it are important to consider when thinking about how to specialize the system.
The first Zone - Since cultural/influence levels are further apart than in Vanilla, there are three workable zones and you can't overlap cities, the first three planet slots are the most important. Sometimes the mapscript gives you systems where there is only one ittsy bittsy planet in the first zone, none in the second, but three awesome huge planets with moons and a resource in the third, to name an extreme example. While such a system could become great in the long run, it would take forever to accumulate the necessary influence to annex all the good planets. This is even more important for Halis because of their influence penalty, while Paradise can be more flexible here.
Geopolitical (cosmopolitical?) concerns - Distance from Capital, is it easily defendable, is a rival planning to settle it too, stuff like that.

I have no idea what you are trying to say...

In or out of character?

Ok, I see now. You were in character. I need more sleep...

In Character:
Spoiler :

TO Forge Vessel:
"I don't know what type of game you are playing, but we need to know your intentions. I am authorized to extend a hand of peace. However, we are more than capable of defending ourselves.
You are getting close to entering our space. Make your intentions known."

After silencing the communication array, Captain Avera turned to his crew and began giving orders.

"Corporal, get the Planetary Defense Counsel on another Chanel. We may be dealing with hostels. "

"Aye Captain, sending request now"

The Captain sighed as he rubbed his temples, "I do not need this today."

"Captain, I have the minister of Planetary Defense on a secure Chanel for you."

"I'll take it in the conference room 1"

The only actual effect of the rings is that there is one great wonder which can only be built on a planet with rings, the Great Rings Park.

Thank you! Perhaps it should give you some additional bonus/penalties. Like easier to defend, but harder to settle? I don't know, it would be nice to have planets divided into Jovian/terrestrial...

"Actually, you are entering our space, so I could ask the same of you. Unless you picked up your scanners in a garbage bin you should have long determined that none of our ships have offensive capabilities, so even if we wanted to hurt you we would be unable to do so.
You are not the boss of me, you arrogant snob. In case you haven't noticed, the PDE has kinda stopped existing, which means we don't have to take orders from anyone, least of all a stuck up slimebag like you. Now why don't y'all just bugger home or let someone who actually knows what he's doing take over the comlink?"

OOC Notes on lore:
The PDE (People's Democracy of Earth) is the former interstellar government and master of all colonies. Now that it is gone with the mysterious disappearance of Earth and the local garrisons have set course for the stars to check up on it, taking all the advanced equipment with them, every former colony has to fend for itself. New Earth was the first colony founded and since most of their higher ups, including the faction leader Hector Alvarez, have been flown in from Earth herself rather than being born locally they have always been the most loyal to the PDE. Hence they have always been treated well, were considered the crown jewel of the PDE's colonial empire and were often the first to receive access to new technologies and luxuries.
The Forge meanwhile, while is also has been around for a while, indeed it was the second colony founded, had a more pragmatic relationship with Earth. Its sole purposes were mining resources and providing heavy industry, sending most of their produce home in exchange for food and the odd luxury. Here Earth is seen more as exploiter of the locals' hard work, and not many people miss the PDE now that they can finally utilize their industry to better their own lives rather than serve a far away master.

Since New Earth sees itself as rightful successor to Earth and thus new master of the other colonies and the Forge would like to keep their newfound independence, it is obvious that tensions are abound. The only faction who dislikes (New) Earth more is the Brotherhood, since they are the rebels from a penal colony for political prisoners. AstroTech hates everyone equally and Halis is isolationist, the Red Syndicate can be your best friend provided you have deep enough pockets (they are gold-diggers is what I'm saying) while the Avowers of Knowledge only want to research and explore in peace indifferent to the political climate and Paradise is the most diplomatic.

If we go by lore you would (peace-)vassalize the Avowers and maybe the Red Syndicate too, maintain neutral to friendly relations with Paradise, view the Brotherhood as rebel scum and your worst enemy, be indifferent about Halis, and be either neutral or hostile towards the Forge and AstroTech depending on how much their conquests affect you.

Maybe we should have discussed at the beginning how this game was to be played. Are we to be locked into playing our role as per the "lore"? Or do we define our own style and role-play ignoring the "lore".

I'm fine either way, but it would be good for all of us to be on the same page. Also, I may have handled our encounter a little differently if I had known...

Well no, you can play however you want of course.
