Civilization V Special Edition Announced

I doubt they would offer it as an "exclusive" reward for buying a deluxe edition and then immediately make it available to everyone else.

That said, very little that they've done as regards the marketing of purchase options makes much sense. I've never seen such an expensive collector's edition. Nor a game with mutually exclusive premium editions that required you to buy more than one product to get all the possible features.

Now I find this issue pretty simple. I actually do not mind that this CE or SE or whateverE doesn't have the Babylon civ. The only reason I am not rushing out to cancel my current preorder of the Deluxe Edition on Steam to buy this is instead is because there has been no disclosure on whether the Babylon civ will be available to all at a later date.

I don't feel like we are been goofed around, but rather that someone at 2K or Firaxis are still trying to figure out the whole DLC scheme and it's feeling rather unprofessional here on the outside.

Now call me a sucker, but I would actually find myself buying the CE if I knew all the facts. But I don't, so I am not going to take chances. And if they come out at launch date saying 'in three months time, you can get the Babylon DLC for only 10USD' or some such, I would ask myself, 'why could they not have said this earlier? Would it really have 'cost' them more money?' and more importantly, that I would feel annoyed that I didn't get the CE even though I could get the Babylon civ eventually.

That is not to say I don't appreciate the rather direct communication we get with 2K (far better than most game companies (though not even close to what Paradox Interactive offers, there we have direct communication with the developers)), but it feels too often like a PR thing. Such as instead of getting the real concerns answers, we get to know the sizes of the figures. I'll have to admit, though, that that is one of my least concerns. I am sure the figures will be quite nice, indeed.

But hey, I am just repeating what has been said in this thread up until this point. I would buy the CE, if I just knew one thing.

The price on the special edition isn't that bad. The 5 minis are worth $30-$40, the game is worth $50, that leaves $10-$20 for the book, soundtrack, etc...

30 or 40 $ for the minis? Really? :o

I think those "choose pics and print a photo book" books cost about 50-60 $ for the number of pages we are talking about (if not more). My guess would have been that the art book is the most expensive item in the set, but then again I thought the miniatures cost like 50 cents a piece... (but I guess that's only their worth to me, personally).

For Aussies, the collector's edition is 30 ish percent more than the steam price of the standard game. To Americans, I guess it's about 100 percent more at 100USD. That is right, isn't it?

Nor a game with mutually exclusive premium editions that required you to buy more than one product to get all the possible features.

Sadly, that's the way it goes. Again, EA offered so many preorder items for Mass Effect 2, it almost doubled the armor/weapon customization options. In theory, because it was not possible to get all of them, and even harder outside the US.
Ironically, one of the main criticisms of the game was the lack of different armor models ;) And it earned them thousands of angry posts on their boards...

Example: The only way to get a visor instead of a full helm was to get promo codes from Dr. Pepper Cola (not sold in large parts of Europe). But if you bought the drink, you had a choice of 3 different models (only 4 helmets shipped with the vanilla version!!!) :crazyeye: And they wonder why customers feel fooled...

I am really relived about this anouncement - that is allways the Version I am willing to buy. Beeing willing to pay anything below 100 € for the most anticipated titles, I am allso willing to pay the extra 5 € for the Babylon DLC.

As an Xbox and EA customer I am quite used to the whole DLC scam stuff. Beside the better margin for DDL vs. boxed, the ability to distribute additional content is the second biggest reason for a Publisher to go with such a platform.

I really hope, and am quite shure, that Babylon is going to be abvailable right from the start. But luckily, this is still a PC game, and if it is not the case, I am not shy to say that I am just going to pirate this feature. It was easy enought with any PC game until today.

Bottomline: Create as much versions as you want, but be ashured: people willing to pay allmost anything (short of buying 2 copies) to get the full game will allso do almost anything if it is denied to do so.

Hey.....WHERE did you order your Civ 5 Special Edition from?? I want to order one too but I cannot find it available at my two usual spots.....GameStop and Best Buy.
Thanks for any help.

Since I will be getting the Special Edition I guess that means "Alas, Babylon". Anybody here remember the book by that same name???

See my signature for links to all known webshops. It also lists the special edition sources. Within USA that'd be Amazon of EBGames.

Why isnt the CE available for Preorder in the UK / rest of Europe then?

The Special Edition is available for PreOrder in Europe, see the link in my signature. That is, it's confirmed to be available in Austria, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Netherlands, Norway, Spain and Sweden.

Just not in UK or Amazon UK. The Answer from Amazon is (posted here): because different Amazon sites are run independently.

Let's hope (as I mentioned in another thread) that 2K are not going to continue side stepping those in the UK.

Im in the UK so sites which dont charge in £ or ship to the UK for free are no use.

Yeah, import it from Amazon.de  That'd be nice for a change instead of Germans important that stuff from UK sites to get an English version.

Actually coolshop.co.uk suggests that they may carry the Special Edition later, but they don't have price information yet.
