Basically what I read from this is developers saying: Screw the players for never playing scenarios, so now we remove the entire normal game mode and makes game only play like scenarios.
I really hope I'm being unfair here, but I must say I'm shocked to my core. I did not think for a moment I would hesitate pre-ordering a Civ game, but ...
HK is relatively new. By the time HK released it was likely too far along to do big changes. But we don't know for sure how it's implemented yet, so let's not despair before it's necessary.
Civ-switching was not an inherently bad feature in Humankind; it's just that some progressions did not make sense, and were very pick-and-choose-y based on what you as a player wanted at the time.
Something like beginning as the Franks and then becoming either the French or the Holy Roman Empire would be interesting. Or England and Scotland > Britain.
I attempted to create a mod that involved Civ switching using natural historical progression. The problem is this doesn't work for all civilizations. Many civs simply just ended and many were conquered. Egypt is a prime example. Conquered by the Greeks, then the Arabs, then the Ottomans. Who should they evolve into?

map looks like a substantial improvement to civ 6, i'll give it that. the leader art style is not something i'm a big fan of. they're halfway to chibi-fication.
Idk, I felt like the textures and rendering were substantially better, but it's very possible I played civ 6 on a potato and just the nice renders of the map seem better
Culture techs exist and (as per Boesthius's description) allow each Civ to unlock certain buildings, improvements and wonders ahead of the default Tech and Civics trees that are available to everyone.
LOVE this innovation btw. It really helps feel like you're playing the Civ you chose at the start of the game.
I really like the look of what was shown so far. A lot of promise, with a few bold moves. Plus a whole lot of unknowns yet, so many more reveals to look forward to. I say bring it on! Been playing since Civ 1 and yes the game has changed a bit since then still I am really keen to try 7. I am good as long as it is still One More Turn!
I am puzzled by the idea of swapping civs like gloves during the dawn of the new Age. Sounds complex. Specifically in the context of 7-8 players ... and each one swapping his civ for another one a couple of times during the game? semi-randomly? That's one hell of a kaleidoscope! And a whole new dimension of information one needs to internalise on the fly, including specific bonuses of new civs overlayed onto old resources. This civver is unconvinced. I need to see it to believe it!!!
Okay, now that I've watched the showcase, I hate changing civs less than I did at first (though I'm still leery about it). The leaders look better in the showcase than in the trailer, but they still look bland. The leaders need polish, obviously at this stage, but they need more than that; they lack any sort of style or flare or interest. The map and cities, on the other hand, look stunning. But leaders staring at each other from opposite sides of the screen has to change. Leaders should interact with the player, not stare at each other. That's a very, very, very bad design. I love crises; it's like R&F's forgotten dark ages perfected. And I adore culture-specific civics.
