Civilization VII - Gameplay Reveal Trailer (Gamescom Opening Night Live - 8/20) Discussion

Livestream seems to be playing the main theme right now, or at least an Industrial Era theme.

What???? Ben Franklin is a Leader?
Eh, Gandhi's been in Civ forever, and Ben Franklin actually held political positions in America that weren't purely symbolic, so it's not that weird.

We will know in 45 minutes whether that's actually the case though.
We shall see.

I enjoyed the trailer (minus the leaders) but the Steam description has me worried, that's exactly what I feared when I read about the next "revolutionary" entry in the series. I'll wait for the gameplay stream to get some answers, it's too early to complain.

Folks I think maybe what they're trying to do is some super-create-your-own-Civ game where there's dozens of leaders and bonuses and Civs and you just freestyle everything for an amalgamation

If I’m reading the tea leaves correctly, it sounds like the ages will be much more distinct than in past titles. You play as the leader, but pick your civ like you would an age goal or bonus in VI, except the bonuses are more dynamic.

I can get behind this. I don’t find it unimmersive since many civilizations don’t run the whole of history, and many do evolve (Aztec->Mexico, Rome->Italy (or Romania, or Germany, or Russia, it depends on who you ask).

I’m actually quite excited for this Age-focused play. I’ve started dozens and dozens of multiplayer games with family only to stall out in the medieval age. Being able to play a more discrete time period (a la the Vikings or Poland or Australia challenges) actually sounds fun.

I also like the idea of dynamically switching some bonuses throughout the game. Policy cards were actually fun for that. Imagine doing that with entire civ level bonuses. That should help keep some games from being stale once you’re out of the ancient era (like Gilgamesh was in VI) or irrelevant until late game (I contend the US didn’t have a unique unit in VI).

My prediction is that they deliberately revamped the game so that it's no longer the whole world or all of human history, but something more akin to an AoE battle royale, hence the suspiciously low player count

Another Industrial theme playing right now is my guess, or what sounds like a darker version of the main theme.

Strangely, this doesn't seem to be tied to any one Civ, so perhaps there's generic background music for certain eras as well?

Edit: maybe a Golden Age theme and Dark Age theme? Just what it sounds like.

I say this, the idea of what Civ Blitz offered was amazingly fun. I think adaptive/changing traits is actually a good mechanic, it's just that it scratches the immersion thing that breaks down. Rip Immortal Leaders.

To be honest they kinda had a slam dunk if they changed very little but gave us all these enhanced graphics, some new mechanics, leaders and a couple overhauls.
But an overhaul as big as changing leaders or something like that... I don't think it will go down well.

Capitalizing Ages is really significant and symbolic of all the changes they're bringing. It's a feature now, not just a method of tracking time.

Side note: Thank you to the moderators working overtime to split all the discussions into separate threads!

Maybe it's better if I don't like the game, since I rarely have the time and energy to play games...

Gosh, same here. Man, I'm getting old.

Sidenote: This new music playing right now freaking slaps. Again!
