@Arakhor- I reallydon't know the answer to that question, but since it was presumably miraculous I don't see why it matters.

Given that (as I imagine) the whole water canopy idea was invented to attempt to justify the Flood in the first place, explaining a miracle by the use of another miracle is highly unsatisfactory, especially when a great many YECs and ID proponents alike try to insist that the events of the Bible did actually occur in line with the accepted laws of physics.

How does even the most cursory study of physics bear out the hypothesis of a water canopy around the globe?

It is so ridiculous that even hardcore Creationists have distanced themselves from it. And that's a rare occurrence.
