Hi there
Probably years behind nothing new there, but stumbled across "Viva La Vida" by Coldplay yesterday. That song should be the anthem for the civ series in my humble o :).

Seems Coldplay works well with board games! Their song "Square One" is absolutely perfect anthem for Chess960....

"Viva La Vida" care of azlyrics.com

I used to rule the world
Seas would rise when I gave the word
Now in the morning I sleep alone
Sweep the streets I used to own

I used to roll the dice
Feel the fear in my enemy's eyes
Listen as the crowd would sing
"Now the old king is dead! Long live the king!"

One minute I held the key
Next the walls were closed on me
And I discovered that my castles stand
Upon pillars of salt and pillars of sand

I hear Jerusalem bells are ringing
Roman Cavalry choirs are singing
Be my mirror, my sword and shield
My missionaries in a foreign field

For some reason I can't explain
Once you go there was never
Never an honest word
And that was when I ruled the world

It was the wicked and wild wind
Blew down the doors to let me in
Shattered windows and the sound of drums
People couldn't believe what I'd become

Revolutionaries wait
For my head on a silver plate
Just a puppet on a lonely string
Oh who would ever want to be king?

etc

Cheers

Coldplay settled a plagiarism suit brought by Satch on this song. That doesn't admit guilt, but if you had a strong case you wouldn't settle given the dollar figures involved.

How it can be the anthem for anything given that it was most likely ripped off is beyond me. You might as well make "U Can't Touch This" the official anthem for something while you're at it.

(Yes, I know that MC Hammer won that case. But presumably you get the point.)

"If I Could Fly" doesn't even have any lyrics, and the lyrics are pretty much the meat of the OP's point.

That's not true (the latter statement, obviously, not the former).

glider1 was suggesting that the lyrics of the song are appropriate to the theme of the game and hence would make a good anthem. I somehow doubt that he had worked out all the legal and monetary ramifications of it and was seriously demanding that civilization adopt it.

It was just something cool he noticed and decided to tell others about it. It is remarkable how well it does fit with the game, glider1 :).

Would be funny to hear if you were just conquered in the game.

Don't much care for Coldplay to be honest. I always find myself humming an old They Might Be Giants song (which I do on pretty much any occasion, now that I think about it):

I built a little empire out of some crazy garbage
Called the blood of the exploited working class
But they've overcome their shyness
Now they're calling me Your Highness
And a world screams, "Kiss me, Son of God"

I destroyed a bond of friendship and respect
Between the only people left who'd even look me in the eye
Now I laugh and make a fortune
Off the same ones that I tortured
And a world screams, "Kiss me, Son of God"

I look like Jesus, so they say
But Mr. Jesus is very far away
Now you're the only one here who can tell me if it's true
That you love me and I love me

I built a little empire out of some crazy garbage
Called the blood of the exploited working class
But they've overcome their shyness
Now they're calling me Your Highness
And a world screams, "Kiss me, Son of God"
Yes a world screams, "Kiss me, Son of God"

"Everybody Wants to Rule the World" by Tears for Fears would be a good one imo.

Theres a The Shadows song called Montezumas Revenge but I can't get a you tube clip of it.

peter gabriel's "games without frontiers" seems to fit...

Nebby plays with Harold, Harold plays with Liz,
Lizzy plays with Georgie, George is happy again.
Oda plays with Alex, Cathy plays with Khan,
Monty builds a bonfire, Otto plays with it.

The Coldplay anthem is a good one!

But for me, it's the Marillion song 'Man of a Thousand Faces' that always speaks to me as the anthem for Civ:

I'm the man of a thousand faces
A little piece of me in every part I take
I hold the tape for a thousand races
A different point of view in every speech I make
Cut me a piece of my divided soul
Cry me a river, call it rock and roll
Give me an attitude and watch me make it lie
Pass me a microphone
I need to testify
Well I speak to machines with the voice of humanity
Speak to the wise with the voice of insanity
Speak to the present in the past and future tense
Speak to a slave with the voice of obedience

I'm the man of a thousand ages
You see my face in the stones of the Parthenon
You hear my song in the babble of Babylon
I'm the man of a thousand riches
Be my guest at the feast of Satyricon
You spend the money that my logo's printed on

Well I'll speak to machines with the voice of humanity
Speak to the wise with the voice of insanity
Speak to the present in the past and future tense
Speak to a slave with the voice of obedience

I stole a fire but it burned up much too soon
I took a leap and I landed on the moon
Look at my life and it looks like CNN
You see something once
You know it's gonna come around again

Well I'll speak to machines with the voice of humanity
Speak to the wise with the voice of insanity
Speak to a woman with the fatal charm of a snake
Forgive like a giver and account for all I take
Yes, I speak to machines with the voice of humanity
Speak to the wise with the voice of insanity
Speak like a leader with the voice of power and command
And when I talk to God I know he'll understand

Cause I'm the man of a thousand faces
Yes I'm the man of a thousand faces

I stole a fire but it burned up too much too soon
I took a leap and I landed on the moon

The ending reminds me a lot of 'Baba Yet' (sp?) as well.

Cheers :-)
