What's your take on Columbus Day?

Personally I question the very fact that it's still celebrated. What's to celebrate, honestly?

I don't think anyone actually celebrates it. I guess I could crack open a beer for the occasion...

Yay for lost Italian sailors!

Coincides with Thanksgiving here. Yummy.

Also, seems relevant:

I live in the city of Columbus and we don't even make a big deal about it. Class isn't even canceled.

Well, it interfered with me trying to mail something to another CFC member, so I'm a bit peeved about Columbus Day this year.

Which Columbus, there's like 30 of them ;)

Yeah, growing up I always thought Columbus day was a day for us, kinda like a kid born on the 4th of July might think fireworks are for him when he's young.

I don't get why Columbus gets a day. After all, Leif Ericson was the first European explorer to discover Europe

By pure chance I would bet the odd sailor got blown off course and made it there before even him.

Sunday or Saturday was Leif Ericson day in the USA just thought I'd tell everyone. Regarding Columbus day: People actually celebrate it??

And almost no one knew about it. For better or for worse, Columbus was the first one to make the Americas known throughout Europe.

That's just a myth US politicians perpetuated to appeal to the emerging Italian American voting block during the early 20th century.

Columbus was a genocidal, slave trading, murderous, plundering scumbag. If Obama had any sack he'd end the holiday.

You can say that about anyone from the 16th century.
