Hi guys,

My computer sounds like my car when I start the engine.

Do you think something is wrong with it?

The fan of the computer.

I just payed 20 dollars for a repair of it.

What happens if I don't fix it?

Depends on what's actually wrong with it. Worst case is the fan completely stops working. Computer fans are fairly cheap though. If you pay over $15 then your being screwed.

Computer fans are, but its also possible the heatsink fan is not working. At best, you can replace just the fan part of it (if you have a crappy stock cooler), or at worst, you have to get an entire new heatsink+fan

and was this a case fan or a heatsink for (a) processor? if it was a case fan, 20$ is about 15$ too much and you got ripped off. If its a heatsink+fan for a processor, you probly got a pretty crappy one ( Decent one's ive seen start from 30$)

The easiest way to do it would be opening up your machine and turning it on and seeing which fan is being loud/not working properly and going from there. Just don't electrocute yourself.

edit: do that at your own risk.

it would be pretty hard to electrocute yourself unless you stick a screwdriver into a molex connector or something.

On the other hand, electrocuting the computer ( ironic, no? ) Is pretty easy. Make sure to ground yourself before playing around in there ( if you have a metal case, just touch it, that oughta do the trick).

When you're checking for the broken fan, pull out your computer onto a desk, pop off one of the side covers and turn it on. It doesnt need to be plugged in with anything but the power cord, but if its not doing the noise making while idling, you should try running something intensive, for which you would need to plug in all the extra stuff.

Okay. It's the power supply fan. I've disconnected it but not unscrewed it. Is it okay to leave it like that or get a new one?

Thanks guys.

Sorry! It's NOT the Power supply fan or CPU fan.

It's another fan that's just sitting at the back by itself. Can I go without it? Or should I replace it? Thanks.

Replace it. If it's your only fan aside from the PSU and CPU, you should consider getting 1 or 2 more fans.
