Computer Questions Not Worth Their Own Thread II

So good software doesn't exist then? I can't think of many programs I've used that delete all the registry things and such after uninstalling it.

Left behind registry settings are irrelavent, if they're for programs you don't have, they have no impact on anything.

Even so, a good chunk of programs I use do not leave behind any registry settings on removal.

I have a DVD that the sound only plays in one side of the headphones. I know its possible to change to both sides in VirtualDub, but is there a way to do it without compromising the quality?

Also, is it safe to use camera in rain? Not a huge downpour, but just rain. The manual says not to use the camera in the shower.

I'm not using it in the shower. I'm using it in the rain.

Any electronics that you use in the rain can be ruined if any water gets inside the case.

OK, I try to install Windows Updates, but after 1 second, they all fail, saying that I'm installing other updates...

EDIT: Working now. Probably just a hiccup.

OK, so I was rebooting for the Windows Update, and it gets stuck on "configuring updates" for over an hour. I get impatient and hit the reset button, and on reboot it told me there was no boot-loader. I had to do an emergency repair of Vista (luckily nothing seems broken). And the updates didn't install properly.

What should I do now? Should I try again? Because it's weird that it takes so long, normally it only takes maybe 5-15 minutes....

My lappy sounds like an auto race. How screwed am I?

Probably not very. Get a can of compressed air and blow out the dust. Make sure you hold the fan down so it doesnt overspin.

How do I reduce window glare on photos? Opening window all the way is not an option (it's a BUS) and the flash isn't on. I tried googling it and I got some Photoshop stuff and something about a "polarizing filter" whatever that means.

Could someone recommend a good (and FREE) media player for windows, that could play pretty much anything?

I've found VLC to play nearly anything. K-Lite Codec Pack is also good, although it's better defined as a set of programs.

If there's no Vista drivers, should I use the 2K/XP ones? I don't want to break anything.

CCCP, don't install any other media players or codec packs.

You know, I tried CCCP, it broke my codecs. Now I get no sound in media player classic, and have to use VLC to view all my videos. Ive tried damned near everything I could think of short of wiping windows.

But hey, K-Lite was working fine before that.

No, the drivers are not compatible, unlike between Vista and Windows 7.

I use K-Lite because it works and I've never had trouble with it (except the video occasionally turning green).

Me neither, until one day it wouldnt play sound on a single mkv file. I messed around with it, wiped it out as thoroughly as I could, went on to install CCCP. Set it up properly, it worked for a few days, then something happened and I stopped getting sound in all files when playing them using MPC.

If it was a single file, most likely a problem with just that one (or it didn't have sound.) I use VLC for trouble files like that, MPC for most others (because for some reason VLC doesn't have the same quality)
