Computer Questions Not Worth Their Own Thread II

I just buy a cheap optical mouse (wired) for a fiver when I spill beer on my old one.

Yeah. Its just that I like the one I have.

If they are semi-expendable why do you see special expensive "gaming mouses." Whats the difference.

Oh and I just took off a little sticker on the bottom that was falling off and I found a small screw there. The sticker must have been a warranty sticker but the mouse is past warranty anyways. All the text must have been rubbed off.

a gaming mouse is pretty much crammed with features that no one really needs, but is there for easy access for lazy people who cant lift a finger to their keyboard.

you can probably buy the exact same mouse somewhere.

I like my mouse but its wearing out and the buttons not clicking so well and sometimes I have to click several times. Is there anything I can do other than get a new one. I dont see any way to take it apart.

You could try canned air to see if it would clean out some dust.

Thanks.

Question. How do you keep your wrist straight when typing. My carpal tunnel acts up because I forget to do this. I used to have these wrist band things but I lost them but they worked. I looked for the bandages you put on sprained ankles to wrap around it (I have some from a few years ago) but I dont know where they went. Any other suggestions?

I suppose when some money comes in I could buy those sprained ankle bandages again but I dont know what theire called.

Adjust the height of your chair or your keyboard so your wrists are more of less straight. If you sit too high or too low they will be bent a lot more than needed.

It will work fine but it will only run at half-bandwidth per lane. So a high-end PCIe2 GPU will end up using all 16 PCIe1.1 lanes that you have, whereas on a PCIe2 motherboard it would only use 8 of the lanes. This isnt really an issue though unless you have a very high-end GPU.

Thanks for the info! I'm looking at something in the ATI 5670 ish range, (e.g., sub$100 to slightly over $100 range) which is pretty low to middle of the road right now so I'm not too worried about blazing speeds. Civ and the odd FPS are my main computer games, and I am never concerned with the highest resolutions at max settings or whatever.

I would be very disappointed if I had to upgrade my mobo for a mere video card purchase. When I originally decided to build my computer, I hoped the mobo would be the one thing I did not have to upgrade for a long time. (Long time in computer-age, I.e. 5-7 years, which is the equivalent of a geologic era.)

Naw I wouldn't even worry about that. The card will run fine on that motherboard.

Thanks.

Get a wrist brace. It's amazing the difference they make.

Thanks

Question. I figurd out that the internet connectins were the ISP's DNS server being messy. What I did was I had a site that was actually an IP (It was one of the college professors sites) and I put it in the bookmarks. And when the thing went out I clicked(just to see what would happen) and it worked so that meant it must not been resolving the DNS.

So i set up the network so that the Preferred DNS is the ISPs (it was in ipconfig / all) Then I set the Alternate one to 8.8.8.8 which is I think Googles public one. Do you think this ought to help.

uh.. do you ever not have a problem?

sorry but it seems like you have one problem after another.

An off topic question for multi screen people. Is it possible to have different wallpapers on your 2 screens on vista?

No, but it should be trivial to stitch two images together so that you have the illusion of two different images.

Question about going to Windows 7x64: What's the cheapest deal on it?

I looked at OEM, but since I'm a perpetual upgrader, I think OEM edition is not the way to go, since calling up to talk to an Indian call center isn't my idea of fun. Also, having XP3, I don't think I'm an "upgrade edition" candidate.

So I'm a student, but the student rate at my school is crap, as are the generic academic superstores versus Newegg. So what's the cheapest deal on a legal, full edition?

Do you have a student email address? Something like studentx@uni.edu

If you do, you can get the W7 pro upgrade for 70$ (although it used to be cheaper)

Does anyone know how I can (legally) emulate an older, slower computer?

I have the Kings Quest VI CD-ROM and everything runs incredibly fast, making the game completely unplayable. This game is from the very early 90s.

Some games work in VirtualBox but if it uses DirectX that might not work too well. However a while ago I uploaded this little CPU grab that Microsoft had out at some point, give it a try:
