Computer Questions Not Worth Their Own Thread II

Do you have another screen to test if it's the screen or the machine?

ı certainly prefer my CRT screen to newly fangled laptop screens which lose colour and stuff if you look at them out of the correct angle . Last night ı was playing Civ on my XP PC , which has been awesome since 2004 despite a few hiccups and it got stuck and ı had start the Taskmanager . The Ctrl+Alt+Delete thing . Now there is this number on the bottom that shows the capacity and it was some always about 924 MB or so with my PC running at anything between 104 to 122 . The number extenting upto a maximum of 1145 when the PDF reader got too much job to do .

last night ı saw it was down to 830 000 bytes . I have some serious issues with starting it , takes up to 8 times as it spins a bit and stops and will not re-start if ı don't cut electric supply , took it to repairs and they couldn't find anything . Is it normal , signs of old age ?

I have just signed up to facebook to follow one particular event. This had lead to 2 questions:

- Is there a way to consume facebook info without using the web interface? What I would really like to do would be to follow/friend the other people who are attending the event, download their posts and search them for particular words. I really do not want to have to read every post they make, some of these people post a lot.

- How does civfanatics know I have signed up? As soon as I registered I got a link telling me to be the first of my friends to like civfanatics, so they must know.

That's not a problem with "new fangled" LCD monitors, that's a problem with TN monitors, which are widely regarded as the lowest quality LCD panel available.

My 8 year old LCD has minimal colour shift off axis:

My newer LCD is even better:

Sure, there's an API.

You got a link where? There's facebook code on cfc, use ublock with Fanboy's Annoyance List to eradicate social media annoyances on other sites.

Thanks. I can make that work, but do you know of anywhere where the work of consuming a feed and outputing to text?

Here is an example on OT.

It is not that I am disturbed by its presence per see, but how do they know? I though cross site scipting was blocked by browsers, and cookies were only sent to the domain that created them. It is not at all my particular area of expertise, and I would quite like to know how it is done.

I'm not aware of anything, you can search, but to me your use-case doesn't sound like something that would attract much dev interest.

I'm not sure about the technical details of facebook's tracking on third party sites; I never browse with it enabled, so don't particularly care how it works.

"Cross site scripting" specifically refers to the security vulnerability and most browsers allow third-party cookies - by default, browsers aren't nearly as restrictive as you suggest.

Visiting forums.civfanatics.com sets cookies for facebook.com, www.facebook.com, google.com, and forums.civfanatics.com. Scripts run from civfanitics.com, facebook.com, facebook.net, googlesyndication.com, googleadservices.com, twitter.com, google-analytics.com and twing.com.

I generally recommend browsing with both cookies and scripts disallowed, and selectively whitelisting those you need. forums.civfanatics.com only needs cookies from forums.civfanatics.com and scripts from civfanatics.com. Operation is faster without downloading/running all the tracking/advertising junk.

If you need to whitelist any of google/facebook/twitter, it's best to have a specific browser install for each of them to avoid having them allowed in a browser where you visit other sites.

you can use adblock to block stuff like the facebook box. i "block" the trending events thing on facebook using adblock.

Yes, see the Fanboy's Annoyance List I linked for that - it's essentially unrelated to Facebook Annoyances; the former blocks facebook widgets on other sites, the latter blocks Facebook cruft on Facebook.

It's best to use the former on a no-Facebook browser so you don't have to whitelist Facebook cookies/scripts on that browser, and the latter on your only-Facebook browser where you can whitelist Facebook.

I recommend against using Adblock. Use either Adblock Plus or uBlock (less cpu/memory than ABP).

ı have no problem with the low quality now that ı wouldn't have money to buy better anyhow . Just assumed it was new back in 2013 ... Regarding the fall of capacity , can it be related to some malware now that the PC refuses to load a "spare" anti-virus programme which was current and used back in 2013 , claiming it's on some other "network" ?

I've observed this on two different screens, so I'm fairly confident it's the machine.

This is really not my forte, but it sounds like the graphics card. Have you updated the drivers?

I'm using the integrated graphics card on my core i5 and I updated the drivers when this first started:(

I assume you used a different cable to test on the other monitor? (i.e. could be the cable that's the problem.)

Are you connecting via HDMI or a VGA cable? Whichever it is, try the other.

It could also be the connection on the gfx card. Try wiggling it a bit.

Could be that particular screen resolution. Change the res and try again. Change the colour depth, refresh rate and stuff too, just in case.

Do you or one of your friends have a spare gfx card lying around? Try sticking that into your machine and see if it still occurs.

Otherwise, if that's not the problem, you might have to resort to something more drastic, e.g. a fresh Windows install.

If you don't want to do that just yet, try pissing about in the BIOS a bit. I know, here be dragons, etc, but if it's onboard gfx then there might be some BIOS setting that makes your card more stable. If there are any overclocking options then turn them off, or put them in reverse (i.e. underclock). Maybe increase the memory dedicated to the gfx card. I dunno, there might be something in there you could try.

At this point though, I think your best bets are either a new gfx card, or a fresh Windows install. No guarantees of course. But try the simple stuff first, like cables and screen settings. My best theory is that your gfx chip is not powerful enough and is running hot or something, causing errors.

Hi!

I'd like to ask about a thing called Windows 10 Technical Preview OS. I tried to search info by googling but I'm not satisfied yet. So I have a few questions:

-Is it free?
-Can I have it as an average Joe?
-Will it expire in x amount of time?

Thanks.

I don't think that's a notable problem... it's a very early release, and will likely be made obsolete by a consumer preview by the time it expires, I can't think of any good reason you'd want to be running the technical preview rather than a newer version at the time.

Well, I'm a student. Students don't have money. The new version of Windows costs money and when I think about how much that is I start to feel sick and I almost go running around my house screaming all the way. Win 7 costs 100€(!!!!) at the cheapest place here in Finland right now so the Win 10 will probably be... horribly expensive. Ofc I could get it for a nice student price but it is still not very cheap..

Oh well, maybe I go and spend my little money to a Win license or just stop whining about the price and keep on struggling with Ubuntu Linux and thinking about how to get game x to work on Linux..

Thanks anyways :)
