Congratulations to CFC for getting us FREE DLC! (the mongols)

You are a fool if you buy downloadable content on a game that will have "unprecedented" modding power. Any modder with any skill will snatch the DLC and copy the necessary files making a free modded Genghis Khan or other $4.99 DLC. Marketing or not, it is a shame games are not completed to start with any more. Now they add minimal additions for 10% of the price of the game - outrageous. Better to wait when the DLC is not selling and they combine all into a $20 expansion pack. Besides, something is wrong with Civ V. It does not have the feel of the better Civ installments like Civ II or Civ IV. I can't put my finger on it but the lack of military units (only 4 for a campaign?) and culture points equaling advanced civics took the wind out of my sails.

Maybe "You are a fool if you buy a game. Any pirate with any skill will make the crack and copy the necessary files making a free game" is what's missing in your post...

FFS no one... NO ONE in their right minds says so. Seriously WTH?

The patch is supposedly coming this week BEFORE DLC. It's not magical and won't fix all the problems, but the rest will follow. So what's the problem exactly? Damage control or not... If you stubbornly don't want this DLS until a few more patches will arrive then don't download it until a few patches arrive. If you're against any, including free DLC until the game is fully patched/fixed, then wait for 3-4 years. But I gotta tell you, it might never happen.

The problem is a poorly designed game and the offering of a FREE DLC to placate those who are dissatisfied with the launched product. It's nothing against the Mongolia pack content, it's just bread and circuses while the architecture needs some fixing.

If you don't see what this is then that's your prerogative or just good faith on your part.

I doubt it's necessary to do any pirating to create a free mod of a civ... I.e., you can't copyright an idea, only the expression of an idea -- so if Babylon costs $5 - it's hard for me to see how they're going to have any legitimacy going after a modder that creates Babylon on his own.

This is actually one of those things I'm getting the popcorn out just to watch -- how precisely one can make an "infinitely modable" game, but still expect to have DLCs.... I suppose maybe going after people scared off by the mini-EULA screen on mods?

Seems to me you can't make a highly moddable game and still expect to sell DLC baubles.... but I guess we'll see!

Uhh sorry if this has been answered, but how do you download this free DLC? Is it in game or do you have to download it outside the game?

Bah... there's no such thing as a free meal... Mongolia is alright, but won't keep the game from being broken. So, I'll collect my "free" DLC and shelve again until the patch arrives.

Poll:
If Genghis Khan was released as a DLC civ (for civ5), how much would you be prepared to pay for it?
29% said $0.

Median amount was $1.01 to $2

The reason I've put Genghis Khan as the subject of the poll (rather than just any civ) is that based on the available evidence it looks like he is the leader most likely to be added via DLC. (early previews of the game and the Mogolia.mp3 file suggest Genghis/Mongolia have been worked on)

As a gift in answer to the "Civ Fanatics" who are "very well organized".

More like we (civfanatics) would be the ones making sure you never hear the end of it if a civ worked on well before release was charged for. :mischief:

NICE!!! Now we just need a patch before then and we will be set for awhile. Does anyone know if Hot Seat is coming in the patch? Me and my friends want to play but with out multiple copies we can't...

Yeah because the horsemen opening gambit wasn't strong enough ;)

Heh heh. I think Mongols will get a biased start on wide open plains with lots of horses. Should be fun for the horse rush warmongers. ;)

I'll take free DLC as well. Unfortunately it doesn't solve the many other issues with the game but it is a small step in the right direction.

It definitely is a marketing ploy though. Damage control.

I would believe this, except IMO this DLC was planned for around this date much before the release even happened. It just conveniently happens to serve as damage control as well.

Hey at least now people who complain that no other companies follow Valve's lead in releasing free DLC have something to take comfort in.

They did not have the time to implement a properly working diplomacy system and fix the major bugs, but they had the time do work on DLC?

Money rules the world...

See my reply to Thormodr. Very unlikely much if any work has been done on this DLC in the past few weeks.

Was it mentioned earlier in this thread that the free DLC for D2D buyers was supposed to be TWO civs and a scenario? I still expect TWO free civs, not including Mongolia.

It could be that they planned it all along. Who knows with Firaxis and 2K Games as their communication skills are so poor.

As long as they don't figure everything is all hunky dory now, I won't look into the reason for it being free anymore.

I was expecting to have to pay for Mongolia, so I, for one, am absolutely thrilled with this news.

Speaking of horse rush, I don't think with this UA Mongol can even beat Songhai. Songhai can gain A LOT more money from barb camps and rush buy A LOT more horsemen, and soon outnumber any civs.

The UA of Mongol is seriously useless IMO, +1movement may be nice but 30% against CS? I don't even wage war against CS:confused::confused:

Again with posters who can't help but to demean fellow fanatics. This is ok???
Why is it OK to demonize people because of a perceived ulterior motive? I find it condescending when people assume I'm a sheep and need to be warned about the secret meaning in this. That it needs to be explained to me how the world works. I'm sorry, but I'm insulted.
Look, my point was not to say we shouldn't be grateful for free DLC. It was to say not to fool yourself into thinking it was released for free by 2K for any reason other than good PR.
My point is that we will have a "thing" that we didn't have before, regardless of whether we are grateful or not, and it will cost us nothing. You don't have to smile and say thank you, because they are not going to get passive aggressive and say how no one appreciates them if you don't. They're not my grandmother. You can simply take it as though it sprung from the void of space and no one will think you're wrong to do so.
I'm starting to think a bigger issue is that for such a well organized group (the quality lauded in the free DLC press release), we're really disrespectful to each other.

It's very easy to claim to be a victim of my scathing attack in order to shame me for not getting on board with you're point of view, or to make anyone else who shares my opinion feel like they're bad people for siding with those who are supposedly being "uncivil". Shifting the "issue" as you called it to whether or not I am a bad person but not referring to me specifically only to "posters who can't help but to demean " or how "we're really disrespectful to each other" making me not a person but a "them" to be vilified. Arguing not with what I said but how I said it.
One might even call it a marketing ploy or PR maneuver, a tactic worthy of 2K.

But your opinion is as valid as the next persons. As Voltaire* once said: "I disapprove of what you say, but I will defend to the death your right to say it."

Of course the only reason I wrote that last paragraph is to paint myself as the reasonable one which is what often happens when an argument is going nowhere and the only way to "win" is to claim the argument is beneath you and quit, leaving the other side to look petty if they continue. Which is what you attempted to do when you called me disrespectful,

So the sequence of events went like this:
2K ego strokes players
you demonize 2k
I undermine your opinion
you attack my rhetorical tactics as disrespectful and claim the high ground
I attack yours as hypocritical for being the very tactics you decry in others and claim the high ground.
I then attempt to double secure the high ground by dissecting my own argument and claiming there is no high ground to claim to begin with.

Diabolical!

So all we have is a game feature we didn't have before and the same arguments. Either the DLC is an extra bonus gift, or something that was withheld. It still works the same either way.

I fail to see how any of this has to do with the Mongols?

He certainly looks better than he did in Civ III anyway. *Ugh*

@Thormodr
Thanks Thormodr :) English is not my mother tongue and I think it's gonna take a while for me to figure out some of the forum features :)
