Coughing up blood

Howdy, I'm in a dilly of a pickle.
I've had a nast cold the past week, and I got up this morning, and started coughing to clear my lungs and throat of phlegm. When I spat intto the singk, it was riddled with blood, mostly fresh, some, I think, had congealed blood in it.
It seems to be coming from the base of the throat.
What the hell is it and what should I do?

Seriously, if you're coughing up blood, you need to be seen by a physician.

It could just be I made my throat raw from coughing, as there isn't a huge amount of blood, so I'll sit it out for a couple more hours

According to my First Aid guide, coughing up blood is the result of injury to the lungs (i.e. internal bleeding). Besides accidents e.g. puncturing a lung, I know that coughing up blood is a sign of tuberclosis (unless all those books and movies are lying to me). I'm guessing the bronchitis guess is not too far off. I've had bronchitis before. At first you think it's just a cold with a nasty cough. You really could have bronchitis.

I would drink some lemon tea. Consider seeing a doctor, but I don't think it's necessary yet. If it keeps happening/gets worse, it's probably time to make an appointment.

If it was bright red blood, and just some flecks, it probably means you ruptured some blood vessels while coughing. If the blood keeps appearing, see a doctor.

You should have gone to the GP this morning, said it was an emergency, and you would have had a true answer within a few minutes. That said, you will probably have returned to full health before the surgery is next open (Tuesday, with appointment for Wednesday?).

I also happen to agree with YNCS, that you died around 10 minutes ago, and so I want you to go to a doctor to see why your still knocking around,(not because your heaving a bloody lung out of your system )

Depends on whether it was a one off or that if you continue to cough, more comes up.

The number of things that clear up with just a bit of time and if you die, well, I didn't know you well

At least you'll have saved yourself the discomfort of visiting a doctor filled with all those ill people
