CrezNES - Another Return to Our Roots

Social Structure of the Wu Empire at the beginning of the Bronze Age:

The royal family had just divested itself of merely being kings and become emperors. The ruling Sun family was said to be descended from the dragons that made the land of the Twin Rivers and they wielded absolute power over the land and its people.

Below them were the nobility, families who all had ties through marriage at some point to the royal family. They were all offshoots, but also they were not of the Sun family itself. None of these families would consider assassination, as it would bring the wrath of the gods, and more importantly the peasantry, down on them. They were however not at all above controlling from behind the scenes. The high noble families are Zhou, Ji, Hua, and Qian. The lower nobility were the Tian, Nan, Wei, Po, Chin, Chan, Zi, and Huang* families.

At the same level as the nobility but for another purpose were the scribes and guilds. During this time period the craftsmen and the literate became much more powerful as their products and knowledge impressed and assisted the Emperor in consolidating his rule. The scribes were all taught by the Huang, family that was lower nobility but gained prominence due to their teaching methods and thus became a school of thought in the Wu Empire. The Huang family name became synonymous with the word scribe and teacher after the Bronze age due to this. The primary guilds were the Farmer and Blacksmith guilds as they represented the food and the tools for defending and expanding the Empire.

Also at the same level as the Nobility, Huang, and Guilds was the Military. The leaders of the army and the navy grew in importance as the Wu Empire encountered other nations of significant size, skill, and proximity to be an issue.

Next came the Artisan class which was made up of skilled craftsmen of any type other than farmer and blacksmiths as those two were valued higher.

Below that was the final class, the peasantry. The peasantry were allowed to move freely through the Empire, but were limited in the jobs they could take. The only real chance for a peasant to move up was to either apprentice to an artisan, join the military, or get very lucky and be noticed by a Huang and sent to school.

*The Huang are mentioned as lower nobility and scholars at the same time as this is when they transitioned from lower nobility to the Huang class. The exact point where this became recognized by the Imperial family is unknown.

4-hour warning.

@Flavius Aetius: Understood, you are welcome back in... but you must send orders or else you're out again.

@Adrogans: It is 1 gold to upgrade 5 armies/navies. That is, 5 of any combination of armies and/or navies.

King Ranjeet was in his palace. The Indians were crippled, almost defeated. Their promises of Mumbai being better than Kolkata were wrong. The new Tiger Cavalry had destroyed their enemy.

“What was this Tiger Cavalry?” Ranjeet asked.

“Well...

Tiger Cavalry are like the cavalry of some other tribes, but instead of horses, they use tigers. When the wild tigers of the Indian barbarians see us, they join our majestic side, mauling the people of India. Their horses are no match for the man-eating tigers of Bengal. The tigers bite the heads off infantry and lunge at cavalry, often injuring the riders. The horses then go back to the wild to roam free. All troops on the enemy side die due to Tiger Cavalry.”

On the Origins of the Tartessian Monarchy
The Council

It is understood that, ever since the Tartessian Empire was established, the Monarch of Tartessos has always counted on the support of the most intelligent and sage people in the country to rule in there. As Tartessos started only in one city, Tartesia (which is still the capital of the Empire, despite attempts to change it to a more centralized place), the Council was formed by the representatives of each of the most important guilds in the city. It is known that the king acted as the representative of the army, and that both the priests and the merchants held one position in the Council. It is rumored that fishers also held it, but they were replaced by a joint representative of all food producers (farmers and fishers). Metal workers would enter the council later, and the Middle Ages saw how the artisans were able to choose a representative to express their problems.

As Tartessos expanded its borders, every new city was given some resemblance of self-governance through its own City Council, which was lead by a representative personally chosen by the King, and with the locals choosing theirs.

The most surprising thing along the history of the Empire of Tartessos would be that never a nobleman would enter a Council through his name alone. The councilmen always had to surpass a test and make a vow to uphold the honour of their guild as best as possible, to always serve the King and to always serve the guild's needs over his own. This last vow was the one that got more people caught, as they erroneously thought their position in the Council would protect them from any illegal deal they tried.

As time passed, it would become more evident that better representation for the masses would be needed...

California Story #1

The History of Califonia Part 1

California has always been a superior Country. It was a Prosperous and productive nation,
until a horrid event. The raids of California. Florida, Chicago and Oregan were the main participants.
But it was the people of Oregon that contributed the most to this horrid act.
But it was times like these that really showed the perserverence and dedication the people of
California had. In a short period, California rose in Power again. Californians got their money and
prosperity back with their economic and business skil, and in no time at all California was a Great
Nation again. But alas, they were still in a war. With the creation of Mexico and Florida' agression,
Shane Irvine, the Californian leader, knew it would be either Peace or War.

The land of Massachusetts, at the onset of the Bronze Age, was divided into four regions. The nation was ruled by the King of Massachusetts from the city of Boston. Though it did not compare in brilliance to the Floridian cities of Tampa or Orlando, it was the largest city for several hundred miles. Most notably, the natives of Massachusetts had dredged and filled in large tracts of swamp and marsh to expand the size of the city even more. Its name meant “The Great Hub” in the ancient tongue of the land, and it was seen as an impressive port and capital by many of the peoples of the time.

Along the shores of the Inland Lakes was the forested hills of Westland. The largest city in that region was Lakeville, built upon the shores of West Lake. This town served as the primary port between Massachusetts and their Chicago allies. Trade ships of the two nations would brave the storms and cold of those great inland seas to bring riches from one kingdom to the other, then down the mighty Chicago River into the lands of Florida.

North of the Hub, The Twin Ranges dominated the landscape. The Green Mountains in the West and the White Mountains in the East created a lush valley between them, from which the people of Massachusetts harvested hundreds of tons of lumber, which were used to create fleets of ships, which explored all along the continent.

Along the Massachusetts Sound in the South lay Seascape. The most prominent feature of this region was the sprawling port city of Yorak. While most of the people along the coast fished and hunted for sustenance, the citizens Yorak were renowned traders. Ships from Florida and caravans from Chicago, as well as barbarians looking to trade, converged on the southern most city of ancient Massachusetts.

Koryo-Xenshin War
At long last the five-century war draws to a close with Koryoan victory as elite Jugguh-NOTs mop up the remaining Xenshin forces. This, compounded with a second Nipponese invasion, completely annihilated both Xenshin and Manchurian resistance. Nipponese forces, having secured access to large populations of refugee Xenshin in Manchuria, engaged in a curious obliteration campaign wherein thousands of Xenshin were organized and slaughtered by Nipponese troops. Nippon has a firm grip over the region but its position is surrounded by the skilled soldiers of Koryo, who could at any minute attempt to secure that land.

Not all is in poor humors, however, as Koryo's victory at long last brought glory to the dynasty and the long line of generals who served the nation. Now, Koryo is rebuilding, and its capitol has been moved to its historic location once more. In the streets grandiose parades are held to celebrate the war, as for the first time in a long time Koryoan children are not taken away to train and fight for their ruler.

The North African War
War seems to stick to Mediterranean nations like a bad and sporadic habit it seems as once again conflict rules the western sea. Carthage launched an all-out assault against Sicilia and was successful in plundering large amounts of gold from Sicilian cities. On a victory lap, the Carthaginian galleys stored the gold in Qar-Hadasht; however, it would soon prove unsafe even there.

Tartessian forces set out from Tartessus' African holdings on land, driving east strong and hard against almost no defending forces. They tore up the land as enclave and town fell beneath their might, until at last Qar-Hadasht itself was taken - as well as all of the loot from Sicilia. The massive Carthaginian navy was quick to regroup in Sardinia, where it is prepared to make its last stand against the pro-Traders of the Mediterranean. (+4 gold for Tartessus, -4 growth points for Sicilia)

The Channel Affair
Channel Union's position went from bad to worse this century as the country broke out into nigh-civil war with a massive and unexpected Dani invasion. The Channel Union longboats were overtaken by Dani Vikings, as the former kings of the Channel Union were utilized by the Dani to lull the admiral into a sense of unpreparedness. Following this, the Dani Vikings were quick to attack London and Normandy. London quickly fell, however Flanders stood strong against the Vikings. The Celtic militia were quick to respond in Britain, and in France the front fell back to prepare to respond to the Dani. The Dani, bogged down in its efforts to cause damage to the Channel Union, were stymied in their efforts to utterly push the Channel Union from northern France. As it stands, the war could go either way, but the loss of London could be catastrophic for the Channel Union.

In more Channel-friendly news, the Kingdom of Milan efficiently and quickly attacked the Franks from behind. They pushed east for quite a distance before Frankish barbarians stopped the advance, and now the two forces remain locked in an impasse as both sides desperately try to gain the advantage.

The Treaty of Poverty Point
This century in Poverty Point, Sioux, a treaty was signed whereby the Sioux would surrender land on the Chicago river to Chicago and pay 3 gold to the Three Kings in exchange for peace. With a heavy heart and, feeling betrayed, the Sioux acquiesced. The treaty was by itself a small affair but marked a significant improvement in east-west relations, even as Floridian influence crawls even further westwards, and California attempts to achieve parity with the east by itself. Still, the treaty was well-received by Chicagoans, who finally feel as though things are going their way.

RANDOM EVENT: Massachusetts fishermen report extremely large catches off the coast of Boston. Some see this as a sign, and the Bostonian governor commissioned a bronze fleet to aid in the fishing endeavors. (+1 bronze fleet, +2 growth points)

UPDATE IN 24 HOURS

Sorry about the meagerness of the meat and potatoes section of this update, I'm tired and it is quite a bit of work. I may have to reduce the update resolution to, like, every 2 days or something.

@matt: sorry I got your orders very late in the update. I managed to update your stats but the map only shows 2 cities, and I could not do your expansion.

What happened to the Xenshin Capitol? Should this not be occupied by mighty Koryo?

Also, I shouldn't need another turn before I raise troops. You also forgot to end Xenshin's template.

California story #2

A tour of Irvine Part 1

By Churchill 25

Directed by the Don of California

Irvine, It has been said it is the most beutiful city in the world. Nestled only 10 miles from the coast, in the beutiful Mediterranean like Southern California Climate. It has a long history. It was the center of California Prosperity before the raids on Irvine. The city was struck hard during this horrid event.

But Irvine survived. The rich rebuilt their city, and pretty soon, you could tell its back to its old prosperity. The City is separated into different sections. There is Beverly hills which is a very rich residential neighborhood. The biggest and nicest houses are located there.

The next section is the business district. The main business of Irvine is of course the Entertainment business, called Hollywood. Drama and music has flourished so far. Shane Irvine, the leader of California had dreamt of something called a Motion Picture. But so far, that is
impossible.

There is no dirty industry in Irvine because Californians fear it might pollute the most beautiful city in the world. There is just commerical,
residential and entertainment districts.

From Dani Tribe

To the Channel Usurpers

If backstabbing and breaking one's own laws are a measure of civilization then you are far more civilized than any other people we ever met. As for us, we have pledged to aid the Rightful ruler of the Channel to regain its throne, surrender and he might show you mercy, resist and you all the other rebels will Die.

To the Celts
Brethren, help us defeat those that encroach your lands and way of life so that your children may live as free men as you ancestors were.

To the Franks
Brothers, our aid has bought you time, but you will need to organize if you are to survive, surely there is a great leader amongst you that can lead your people.

To Milan
End your attack on our brothers and we might establish a fruitful friendship. There are plenty of other lands your people can settle without becoming our sworn enemy.

@c&cciv3: Zut alor! I can't believe I forgot you. My most dreadful apologies.
