The main problem with the conquistador is that by the time chivalry is available to build them, all of the good land on other continents has already been settled, leaving you with all the useless desert, and tundra land.

yeah the unit is just another failed idea in this game.

I miss the map script from CivIV that made all the players start on an "old world" continent and the "new world" continent is free to settle

no it is a fail and needs more than a buff.

So...2 buffs :D.

An explanation how it could be fixed is probably helpful ;).
A bonus for natural wonder discovery might be flavourful. Exchanging the ability is probably a bad idea, because it would destroy the flavor it has, and it makes sense history wise (not to 100%, but enough to warrant an inclusion in the game).

Else we would have tons of threads about different civs, that's too much ;). The one big is doing it very well ;).

Portugal and the dutch would definitely also fit in there.
But that doesn't make the conquistador problem obsolete, because both would probably suffer from the same problems, because they would also need some bonus regarding discovery/new world exploration. Thinking about that will probably bring also some good ideas for the Conquistador up ;).

Back to topic, else i have to get my mod stick and smack someone with it, we are itchy about anything regarding mod actions (like moving threads).

So, the topic, your criticizm on the conquistador...that you criticize it means you have a problem with it. So it would also be good if you outlined your possible solution for it ;).

Some Civs are highly situational. Try a game with Spain, England, Polynesia, Denmark etc. on Terra (again Terra = old world/new world script). That would be fun. Conquistadors would be boss on Terra. They are designed to wipe out barbarians and settle what's left. What are slingers/panzers etc. designed to do, probably less.

The value of the unit comes from the fact it has the power to take cities fighting thru any resistance quicky (xtra movement) and then even settle the spots some young less advanced civ had yet to get to. Playing the Spanish on an actual world map...bee-lining to astronomy and taking over central/south America (or even australia for that matter) makes for a grand game and quite some fun (especially discovering natural wonders first and settling them!) My 2 cents. Would rather have the turcio changed to be honest.
