Crusader Kings 2

Durning my play as Pisa, when in war againsg Genoa, Venice got France to go into a embargo war against me. Thanks to my finance and a civil war in France I am pleased to tell you: I beaten the big blue blob! And Venice paid me over 1k of gold! Two cities are being created thanks to this!

So I finally got around to playing some CKII again, taking a real quick break from modding, and for all the balance issues with the Republic (even with mods, including my own, trying to turn them down a bit), I gotta say the events are pretty cool. Especially the dynastic feud. Had the situation where my guy and another guy got into a dynastic feud, and I kept roleplaying trying to do douchebag things to him. Eventually one of these attempts somehow resulted in both of us ending up as slave rowers on a pirate galley, where our mutual suffering allowed us to bond and stuff so we then led a mutiny and became bffs. Ironically then he died in battle a few months later, so I imagined my guy was holding the dying fellow to hear his last words. And his line went extinct.

You could've just killed him and ended the feud several years earlier.

True but my character was a nice guy (had kind traits and all). I tend to try to roleplay nice guys trying to be nice in a harsh world who end up not being so kind after all when they have to kill or plot against [insert person] to survive.

Also killing's too easy. Not as fun for storyline purposes!

Same.

This always ends up with me controlling everything that matters and getting bored. Again, game needs more cataclysm.

I try not to blob. And I roleplay, to an extent. Keeps games a bit longer in my opinion.

I think CKII is better played not as a blobbing game, even though a lot of people do it.

I want to be at peace three months into a war and at war three months after I'm at peace. Peace time isn't fun unless you're in an event chain and war isn't fun after you orchestrate the defeat of your opponent's military.

Also, murder plots were more fun when they were short and deadly. There was more anticipation.

The game does need a lot more flavor and roleplaying material. For instance I thought the improve stat ambitions added in 1.08 were good, the sort of thing the game could use. Otherwise the only way to get flavor is through mods, but not everybody wants to rely on mods, understandably. Hopefully once PI irons out all the major groups needing a DLC, they'll return to give some flavor-focused DLCs.

I like the sound of all of the minor changes, but the major ones seem unnecessary.

Same here.

Not that CKII+'s a bad mod by any means, but I think the thing with mods is that they always present a certain vision of the game that not everyone agrees with - that's why in the good old days when I first got CKII there were three big overhaul mods, CKII+, PB, and Prince and Thane, that each offered something different for the player. Adopting just one of those mods' ideas might not be the best idea, in my opinion.

But definitely the game needs more plots.

I don't like Prince and Thane either, it seems determined to undermine any chances I have of succeeding to any degree.

Lux Invicta is a hardcore overhaul with an entirely different alt history setting and from what I heard gameplay can be pretty brutal compared to vanilla.

I can relate. I originally stopped Project Balance after the first try because I thought that was way too removed from vanilla. Then I tried again and got used to it and now I'm a PB loyalist. But that I think is the essentially issue all mods, even the most vanilla-like, have to grapple with - by their very nature as mods they're presenting a different vision of the game compared to the devs'.

Pisa grows in power, even if I am facing civil wars over people wanting indepedence. Croatia is now ruled by a queen whose heir is a member of my family. The East Roman Empress's heir is Catholic. All going to plan, save for the civil war and the arrival of the Grand Prince near Denmark which will serve as a rival to me... and to think I remvoed Genoa...

Today I got around to trying the CK2 Demo. Pretty fun, I have to say. Played as the duke of Adrianople and Vidin, and became Roman Emperor within a couple years. I inherited a war with the Turks, which I won, but had to end because I wasn't getting any reinforcements and the Turks were (lesson 1 in mechanics). That proved to be a hazard as without the +30 Fighting Infidel modifier and outside threat, my vassals started rebelling like hotcakes, and my younger brother Andronikus was kind enough to make a ploy for the throne. Good old Byzantine instability, just like it often was back then.

The outcome of the war was in some doubt for awhile, but I was learning the mechanics and was able to get a White Peace in the civil war, imprison some of the disloyal vassals, and white peace with the lucky ones. Of course, that meant my brother was still trying to assassinate me, but he wasn't better than my guards, and before long both of my brothers were imprisoned and stability was restored. That gave me enough time to conquer Tripoli and start a conquest of Aleppo and what I didn't own of Mesopotamia before the demo ended, as well as exploring some of the non-war options in more detail.

So I think it's decided that I'll pick up the base game. My question is, which expansions are great, and do you have to get the first one to get the second one, etc.? I'm thinking that the Old Gods looks pretty cool since I'd been hoping to play as a Norse religion (although I'd like to do that in 1066 - not sure if it allows that?), probably Sword of Islam, and definitely Sunset Invasion for the third or fourth game (although I'm not sure I'd want to always have the Aztecs invading). Legacy of Rome, maybe, I had fun with 1.00 Demo as Byzantium. Republic, I don't know. Also, in which expansions can you play as the Golden Horde once they come to Europe?

Legacy of Rome adds in a few options for other countries too. Sword of Islam is a must get of course. The Republic seems neat, I haven't gotten it yet since it hasn't gone on sale yet.

I wouldn't worry about the Sunset Invasion DLC but you can turn it off in the launcher.

There are still a few Norse pagan regions in northern Norway and Sweden in 1066.

The rest of the DLCs are nice, I'd only get them on sale though. The Ruler Designer is a lot of fun, and the various face packs add some much needed variety.

None of the DLCs out yet let you play as the Golden Horde.
