Crusader Kings 3

That implies that their games only exist to sell DLC, which is unfair, I think. They make a lot of DLC, yes, but they keep updating their games for free, years after release, and people still buy the DLC anyway.

The trouble is that quite often their numerous DLCs "break" the base game. Im often reminded of my time with Stellaris. And i was really annoyed that i had world events that i literally could not complete because i did not have the relevant DLC.

Well, I've had a couple of Stellaris events which wouldn't complete anyway (and I have the DLC in question). I think that's rather more likely to be a bug than it is Paradox putting the events in vanilla and the triggers to complete them in DLC.

Maybe. Or maybe its a psychological lever to try and get you to buy the DLC :crazyeye:

Time for a report on my succesful Iberian run that saw my dynasty, the Dhunnunid, rise to be the Caliph of Muwalladism.

Now the Hispanic Empire has cometh to a greater hight in avenging Toulous.

Spoiler Avenged :

The Muwalladi Caliphate has through piety and glory taken hold over Western Europe and Africa, with nearly all of West Francia now part of the dominion of the Andalusian emperor and Iberian Caliph Tariq of the Dynasty of Dhunnunid!

Spoiler The Avenger :

For the greatest of God and the piety of the Prophet we have enshrined ourselves through Tariq the Avenger!

BTW Byzantine follows Ibadism, Egypt is Coptic, the Danelaw (note: I am on a 1066 start) is Catholic again (although Adamites are in Scotland), Syria is under a Crusader King (Palestine however is under my control) and one of my vassals so happens to be the Caliph of Almohadism.

So I own EU4, got few hundred hours in it but never fell in love. Feels like the whole game is just "painting the map" and repetive.

I'm interested in CK3 though as I've read some fun stories about it. Does it differ from EU4 a lot ?

CK is far more character-focused than EU. Much easier to roleplay, and the RNG dynamics for traits and events add a lot of replayability and curve balls.

Just to warn folk: the achievement system for Steam on CK3 has a bug that forgets who you start as after you load your save, a factor I am come to note from experience through my Matilda, Rurik and Iberian siblings runs.

I made someone using portrait editor, more bookmarks+ mod and savegame editing. Hopefully she's recognizable enough

Patch 1.1 will be deployed tomorrow: link to the Paradox Forums for the (long) patch notes.

Alterations include but are far from limited to:

  • Ensuring positive fevour for the religion that is hit by a outbreak of heresy to help it come back.
  • Changes to petition to ensure more smoothy on different laws are reflected.
  • Negative fame impact for denying call to arms, specially on defensive ones.
  • Cooldown to ask subjects to convert is now set to 15 years.
  • The Pechenegs are now a bit more stable at game start.
  • Outnumbering one's foes should increase the chance of your knights surviving.
  • Temujin gets a buff: a roster of knights and Han sieg engineers.
  • 'Take the Vows' can be used on those line to succession, enabling some control as it were on petition.
  • The Exclave Independence game rule now triggers closer to succession for AI rulers
  • The Renown gain from alive dynasty members is now capped at 2/month: that is 100 alive members max.
  • Viking vassals are now more restricted when it comes to overseas conquests. We will see if this means no more Swedish colonies.
  • Jarl Haestinn now starts at Fame Level 5 instead of 6.
  • The regional innovation Stammesherzogtum now also reduces the likelihood that vassals will join Independence Factions,
  • The maximum penalty for being over your domain limit is now -100% taxes/levies, increased from -90%.
  • If you vastly exceed your Domain Limit for more than one year (the grace period for new inheritances/conquests), all buildings will deactivate until your domain limit is lowered.
  • Discouraged the AI from doing naval invasions when land invasions are feasible.
There is more stuff: these are just some of the examples of what will come via the patch.

What are people's thoughts on Ck3 now it has been out a while? How does it compare to CK2 with all DLC for example?

I’ve been playing CK3 on the Xbox Game Pass. I think it compares to CK2 surprisingly well.

Obviously it doesn’t have everything CK2 does after all its expansions, but with the expanded map, two starting dates and fleshed out character options and intrigues it’s a very good starting point.

I haven’t spent much time with non-Catholic cultures yet but the Muslim, Pagan and Orthodox cultures seem much more fleshed out already than they did at CK2’s launch. The character models alone are a huge improvement. The interface I find much improved too.

Muslims and Pagans weren't even playable without expansions in CK2. I'm still waiting for the price to drop, another 6 months or so.

You might get lucky with the Winter Sale. CK3's already been discounted 20% with the smaller sales, so maybe we'll get a 33% off or even a 40% off with a big one.

I shall keep a look out. It was only 10% off in the Black Friday sale but after Xmas is a more likely time for a decent discount than just before I guess.

Odd, it's 20% off on Steam right now during the Autumn Sale. Which is ending in an hour and a half.

Though IIRC Paradox has smaller discounts on their own site for some reason.

I wish to share here my joyful African run in Crusader Kings 3 via a Daurama Daura start.

After centuries my Empresses finally suceeded in leading the Bori faithful to bring unity to Africa.

Spoiler One Africa :

Salimata II would go on to defend the annexed territories of Palestine from the Crusade for Jerusalem.

Spoiler The Pope and the Sarauniyar Sarauniyar :

Then finally all of Africa became one with the Bori faith.

Spoiler Mother of Us All :

Spoiler Lands of the Bori :

Glory to the Daura Dynasty!

That is quite impressive. Makes my conquest of Ireland look positively lame

It took time and fortune, particular due to the potential risks from Ghana, the Arabian Empire and the Eastern Romans once one began to expand beyond the cradle that is Central Africa. I had fortune that the Abbassids kinda collapse around the 10th century during my run and that I able to overun Egypt, before turning attention to secure East and West Africa.

Anyhow: I wish to report the status of the Empire of Kanem-Bornu in the year 1453.

Spoiler African Imperium :

Additional: the status of world faith, culture and development.

Spoiler societial aspects :
Spoiler faith :
Spoiler culture :
Spoiler development :

Finally: my last ruler and her capital.

Spoiler Glory to Sarauniyar Sarauniyar Salimata V! :
