CTIV-1: The Turtle Game

(0) 1050AD
Situation mostly discussed above. Here is our new city, Karachi, with corn being worked and library in progress.

Karachi.jpg

In addition, I change the production at Calcutta from a market to a missionary so that he can be sent straight to Karachi for a production bonus.

(1) 1060AD
- Hatty is back to pester us about open borders, but I’m being closed-minded.
- Literature comes in and we get cracking on Code of Laws (due in 4).
- Our worker at Bangalore is sent to build a road to Karachi; the one at Bombay is appointed to chopping duty for the library.

(2) 1070AD
- Borders expand at Bombay but the second silver resource is still out of reach. In fact, there isn’t really much change to the political landscape.
- A worker is given the task of building a road towards Green Spot.

(3) 1080AD
- Karachi is now connected.
- Kolhapur is founded at Green Spot, with a library as the initial build.

(4) 1090AD
- Borders at Lahore expand – again, there isn’t really enough difference to justify a screenshot.
- Missionary now ready at Calcutta. He is sent directly to Karachi and spreads Buddhism there on the same turn. Calcutta now resumes work on its Market.
- At Karachi, the road builder is directed to build a farm on the corn.
- Our galley near Kolhapur begins a long journey south, where it will be used to spy on enemy territory (we still don’t know anything about Hatty’s city west of Hastings).

(5) 1100AD
- Code of Laws finished; Drama started for access to theatres (ready in 2)

(6) 1110AD
- The market at A-M is completed. Now that we have Code of Laws I’m going to put both Epics into production. Delhi has more potential as a GP factory so the National Epic goes there (ready in 9); the other is allocated to A-M as cultural ammunition versus Egypt (ready in 11).
- Bangalore finishes a harbour and starts a courthouse
- Bombay finishes a monastery and also starts a courthouse.

(7) 1120AD
- Drama comes in; Feudalism started (ready in 7).
- Lahore’s aqueduct is finished on schedule, just in time for the city to grow.
- Kolhapur is now connected; the workers (3 of them) get to work on a quarry and one of the wineries.

(8) 1130AD
:coffee:

(9) 1140AD
- Calcutta builds a market and starts a courthouse.
- A worker begins a mine N of Karachi.

(10) 1150AD
:coffee:

Notes:
- Borders at Karachi are due to expand in the next couple of turns.
- At Madras, I’ve sacked our engineer and employed a merchant instead; in fact, I’ve employed a second merchant to halt growth temporarily (it’s icky there) and bolster our finances until they recover slightly from my city-building frenzy. We are currently running at -3gpt (mainly due to the fact that I switched off Wealth at Delhi to build the Epic) but I can live with that; I hope you can too.
- I didn’t bother with a missionary at Kolhapur as it was less of a priority than Karachi, but it’s certainly one option.
- As mentioned above the gallery is now in the south so that it can spy on our neighbours. It hasn’t yet reached its target.

Obligatory pretty pictures:
Note our cultural standing compared to Egypt on the Info Screen.

ChrTh, you're up!

 Nice job. - 3gpt is great considering the two new cities. Once the courthouses are completed, we'll get a nice boost. Looks like we'll be able to maintain the integrity of our cultural borders with Egypt, too.

The one thing we'll need to worry about is our cities capping in population due to health issues born from no trading. Oddly we have absolutely no offshore resources. Perhaps we'll find some lonely islands with resources after optics ... (doubtful, but there's a shot.)

I got it, will play tonight (60 turns of SGs last night, only 10 tonight!)

Interesting that Heliopolis actually has some Indian culture in it  ... while I doubt we can flip it, keeping the pressure on it will be good.

Glad to see Code of Laws in and the courthouses being built. FP should probably be in Bombay, unless someone has a better idea.

Percinho, if BotlGnomz isn't ready yet, do you want to take a turn?

Turn 0 -- 1150 AD

Everything looks good. I like the fact that we're in the Optics tier but haven't come across any caravels from other Civs yet.

I do want the border cities to get started on Theatres asap, but I don't want to bankrupt us doing so, so I'll watch it.

Turn 1 -- 1160 AD
Karachi: Library > Theatre

Turn 2 -- 1170 AD
Lahore: Courthouse > Theatre

Turn 3 -- 1180 AD
Our galley can't get by Hastings ...

Turn 4 -- 1190 AD
...so when Feudalism comes in next turn, I start researching Optics. Due in 6.

Lahore: Theatre > Buddhist Missionary

I contemplate revolting ... but I decide to leave that for the group to discuss.
Our choices:
Vassalage: Cheaper, more experienced troops, but higher upkeep
Serfdom: Workers get faster
Caste System: Unlimited Merchants, Artists, and Scientist, but medium upkeep

We might want to switch to Vassalage at the same time we get to Theocracy.

Turn 5 -- 1200 AD
Delhi completes National Epic and starts Library.

Ptolemy has been born in Delhi! We can auto-research Philosophy or we can create a super scientist or we can save him for a Golden Age.

Ok, I'm pausing here for a few hours to get the team's input. Let me know what you think about revolting and what we should do with our great scientist.

Note: Angkor Wat has NOT been built. Doesn't mean no one else has Philosophy, though. Philosophy also allows Pacifism, but I doubt it's worth it because we'll be going to Theocracy shortly.

I'm leaning toward a specialist for the scientist. Either in Madras or Delhi.

I agree on waiting for the civics change.

The civic changes won't do us much good at the moment.

I'd vote to construct the science academy with Ptolemy.

Oops.
But, we built just one? Do we a decent second city to build another academy?
Else, a super scientist.

I just loaded the game to check because I had no idea: you can build Academy in multiple cities! See, this is why this is a learner's game! :D

If we put one in AM, it'll gain 12 beakers and 4 culture. I think this will be its best use.

Turn 5 continued

Academy in AM and no revolt makes the most sense to me, so I keep playing.

Ptolemy heads to AM, Heliopolis is about to feel a lot more pressure ...

Turn 6 -- 1210 AD

AM finishes Epic, starts Theatre
Lahore finishes Missionary (heads to Kolhapur), starts Granary

Great Library has been built in a far away land.

Liz wants to trade me Theology for Compass + Cash. I see if she'll do it for Compass alone, she says no, I say Buh-bye.

Borders of Madras expands, which can't be good news for York.

Academy is built in AM.

Turn 7 -- 1220 AD

Calcutta finishes Courthouse, starts Theatre, MM'd to start growing again. I've queued up Granary.

MM Lahore a little bit to get more commerce (and thus Optics one turn sooner).

Turn 8 -- 1230 AD

Delhi completes Theatre. Since we're running a slight surplus, I switch Delhi to Research, shaving off another turn for Optics (we're actually better off running Delhi on Research than running Delhi on Wealth and increasing Science to 80%)

Hanging Gardens have been built in a far away land.

I switch Madras from Wealth to Courthouse (they weren't giving us very much wealth as they have low production).

Turn 9 -- 1240 AD

We discover Optics and start Engineering.
AM finishes Theatre, starts Courthouse
Bombay finishes Courthouse, starts Market
Lahore finishes Granary, starts Longbowman

Buddhism has spread in Kolhapur

Turn 10 -- 1250 AD
Karachi finishes Theatre, starts Granary

All told, pretty eventless set of turns there.

Here's the save:

I'd say that the next few turns should be spent getting a caravel or two built and doing some exploring and maybe beefing up military a little bit. Make sure any cultural improvements that can be built is put in AM--I'd love to steal those crabs.

It looks like I'm going to be busy with various things until after Christmas, so could you please skip my turns until, say, the 28th or 29th? Thanks :)

Gang,

There's a new patch out. (Marathon speed?!?) I'm upgrading my PC today, so when it gets back to me we'll be on 1.52 (if you upgrade before it gets back to me, let everyone know).

There seems to be a lot of game play fixes/enhancements in this patch, so I think that everyone in the game should be committed to installing the patch. I know I am. :)

Yikes, :xmas: took a :hammer: to this game!

Pre-turn
AD and Madras are unhealthy, so I use :whipped: to finish the courthouses. Switch Delhi from research to military.

1260AD
AM starts on forge. Madras starts on theatre. Worker at Kohlhapur starts mining; worker at Calcutta starts chopping.

1270AD
We have a good relationship with Hatty, but I turn down this offer. I hate paying for tech (and we are 2 techs up on Eygpt).
ctiv1-mjj-egypt1.jpg

1280AD
:coffee:

1290AD
Calcutta finishes a granary and starts an aquaduct.

1300AD
AM finishes forge and starts on Globe Theater (which fits into our variant rules). AM needs as much culture as we can give it. Madras finishes its theater, and I use :whipped: to produce a spear. Madras is producing a lot of food; we can be liberal with :whipped:

1310AD
:coffee:

1320AD
Engineering is discovered. Start researching guilds (grocers!).

1330AD
Start building settler in Lahore.
