CTIV-2: The Money Game

Variant Rules said:
Fifth Goal: Industrialization. 48th in a beeline. We're allowed to research two techs not on the Industrialization beeline.

According to the above we're allowed to veer off twice in route to Industrialization. Have we already done both of them?

Democracy was the first one and we are currently researching the second one: Radio.

Out of Pocket Until Friday

Hey gang, I'm going to need a skip until Friday. I'm sorry I wasn't able to get my turn done in time. Please Persevere without me :)

Methos said:
@Conroe: Can you swap with me? I won't have time to do any Civving at all until Wednesday. If you can't, I'll play it that evening.
Yes, I can swap with you. I should be able to play it today, just in time for you to pick it up tomorrow.

Well, not a whole lot has changed since I played 10 turns ago. :crazyeye: We have a trade mission enroute to the Romans. Bede has our cities working on building us an army and a navy. I plan on continuing with this direction. Radio is due in 11 turns, so I probably won't be fiddling with the tech during this set.

Turn 0 - 1870AD: Beijing currently has 33 turns still to go on its construction of the Statue of Liberty. Since we currently are employing 2 merchants, I switch one of them to an engineer. This drops the build to 29 turns.

Turn 1 - 1872AD: Chengdu, on Easter Island, completes a Frigate and starts another one. Hangzhou, in the icy wasteland, completes a Courthouse and begins construction of a Barracks.

Turn 2 - 1874AD: Xian, on Easter Island, completes training of a Cho-Ko-Nu and begins training a Grenadier. The diamond city of Shandong completes its Lighthouse and begins work on a Forge.

Turn 3 - 1876AD:

Turn 4 - 1878AD: Shanghai completes a Frigate and starts another one.

Turn 5 - 1880AD: Hangzhou completes its Barracks and begins Grenadier training. Meanwhile, one of our sentry Frigates spots a barb Galley and decides to earn a little cheap experience.

Turn 6 - 1882AD: The barren island city of Kaifeng completes its Harbor and starts work on a Forge.

Meanwhile, our Great Merchant has arrived in Rome. His trade mission is worth a whopping 1700 in gold!

Turn 7 - 1884AD:

Turn 8 - 1886AD: Nanjing completes an Aquaduct and begins training a Grenadier. Our wandering Caravel has noticed a lumbermill near Khan's capital. Apparently he has discovered Replaceable Parts and Military Tradition.

Turn 9 - 1888AD: Evidently, relations are thawing with Kahn. He is now agreeable to an open borders treaty. He also has a cow for sale, but the price (36gpt) is a bit steep. Unfortunately, we have nothing else to offer him.

CTIV-2_1888AD_Kahn.JPG

Turn 10 - 1890AD: Macau completes its Market and begins a Forge.

CTIV-2_1890AD_Demo.JPG

Another uneventful set of turns. I've concentrated on military builds during this set. Because of our lack of shields, we are not producing troops/ships very quickly. However, from the demographics screen, I notice that we are ranked 1st in production capacity. Which means the others are suffering worse than we are.

There are some trade possibilities out there. We have an extra gems available. It would be nice to pick up Khan's cows, but he does not need any shiny rocks. Crab meat appears to be in short supply on this map. If we had an extra, we could possibly do some deals with it. Capac has fur coats for sale, and doing a deal with him or JC, if only to improve relations, may not be a bad idea.

CTIV-2_1890AD_Techs.JPG

We obviously have a good tech lead. Most of the above is because Saladin is so far behind in research. I was hesitant to do a deal to empty his coffers because I was unsure of the diplomatic ramifications.

Radio research will be done next turn. Building the Eiffel Tower was one of our variant's objectives. But because of our tech lead, we are probably safe on delaying this build for a little while.

Sorry it took so long tonight. I totally forgot today was my birthday. It’s funny, had I not had to write the date on some paperwork at work I probably wouldn’t have even noticed. Lol!

Turn 315 (1890 AD)
Methos: Radio is done in one turn, than its back on the path to Industrialization.
Methos: It's pretty bad when Tianjin is running so much extra food we have to hire three 'citizens', as in +1 hammer, in order to keep it from getting an angry citizen. Lol! We need a temple or forge to enable a specialist.
Methos: I hate to spend the cash, but we still have six warriors in our military!?! We should seriously consider either upgrading them or disbanding them. Does disbanding in CivIV grant you anything?
Methos: That's odd. Apparently Izzy and Hatty still haven't met each other.
Methos: Izzy is pleased with us and our relations with the Khan are improving. Both of them get along good with Capac so I see no problem with trading with him. Capac gives us furs for our gems.
Methos: The furs deal allows Tianjin to remove one citizen back to working a tile. She can grown one more pop.
Tech learned: Radio
Macau grows: 7
Kaifeng finishes: Forge

Turn 316 (1892 AD)
Research begun: Steam Power
Research begun: Assembly Line
Research begun: Industrialism
Kaifeng begins: Settler
Methos: I decide to build another settler. There's a small landmass in the south with two crab tiles. Since crabs are in such short supply here I believe this city will be worth it due to its trade value.

CTIV-2_Possible_city_site.JPG

Methos: It looks like it’s a straight shot to Industrialization so we head that way.
Chengdu finishes: Frigate

Turn 317 (1894 AD)
Chengdu begins: Work Boat
Shanghai finishes: Frigate
Guangzhou finishes: Frigate
Hangzhou finishes: Grenadier
Shandong grows: 4

Turn 318 (1896 AD)
Shanghai begins: Work Boat
Hangzhou begins: Library
Methos: I start two workboats in preparation for Crab Village. They will be finished and possibly at the crab sites prior to the city being built.
Xian finishes: Grenadier
Macau's borders expand
Macau finishes: Forge

Turn 319 (1898 AD)
Xian begins: Observatory
Macau begins: Harbor
Shanghai finishes: Work Boat
Tianjin grows: 10

Turn 320 (1900 AD)
Shanghai begins: Observatory
Methos: Shoot! There's no clear path for a Work Boat to get to Crab Village. I'll cancel the other work boat and attempt to figure something out with this one. I totally forgot about their limitation to coastal tiles.
Chengdu begins: Observatory
Methos:  I'll have to go back through my previous turnsets, but I believe this is the same island these two settlers were sitting on several of my turnsets back! Ha!

Edit: Located it back in post #161 on turn #239. Notice that’s 91 turns ago! It takes the AI a while to make up its mind. Lol!

CTIV-2_AI_inept.JPG

Turn 321 (1902 AD)
Methos: JC demands Democracy from us. Both Capac and the Khan are pleased with him, plus Democracy seems to be fairly known I decide to give in. Oddly this bumps him up to Pleased with us.

CTIV-2_JC_request.JPG

Methos: I sent a galleon down to the future Crab Village to check it out, and it appears that JC had the same idea as us. That sucks. It also seems like my batting average this turnset isn't doing so good either.
Kaifeng begins: Grocer
Methos: I stop production on the settler but please remember it only has one turn left to finish. If we ever decide we need another settler don't forget this one.
Tech learned: Steam Power

Turn 322 (1904 AD)
Methos: :woohoo: We have Coal!
Nanjing finishes: Grenadier
Kaifeng grows: 8

Turn 323 (1906 AD)
Nanjing begins: Observatory
Macau finishes: Harbor

Turn 324 (1908 AD)
Macau begins: Courthouse
Beijing's borders expand
Xian grows: 12
Hangzhou finishes: Library
Macau grows: 8

Turn 325 (1910 AD)
Hangzhou begins: Observatory
Shanghai grows: 12
Nanjing grows: 13
Xian's borders expand
Shandong grows: 5

Turn 326 (1912 AD)
Methos: Looks like the Emancipation problem is beginning to appear. Tianjin has one angry citizen due to it.

 My mistake, I Alt’ed out of the game but left the pop-up window for the autologger up. When I jumped back into the game I hit ‘Enter’ expecting it to close the autologger window. Instead, it ended the turn. My apologies to the next player. I didn’t move anything, just immediately saved. I did get the notice that several cities grew so you might want to check the game log.

Turn 326 (1912 AD)
Get rid of the whiner in Tianjin by applying the :whipped: for the courthouse
Then buy a cow from Genghis for  36gpt
Which lets me hire a couple of Merchants at Beijing to get us that much closer to another Great Merchant and finish the Statue on time
Tianjin finishes: Courthouse

Turn 327 (1914 AD)
Genghis comes offering Rifles for SciMeth and 540g. Turn him down for this round as I would rather do the deal elsewhere and get cash instead of spend it.
Hatsheput starts a Golden Age!

Turn 328 (1916 AD)
Spend much time dickering with JC, Genghis and Capac on Rifling then decide it isn't worth it right now.

Turn 329 (1918 AD)
I whip the forge in Tiajin, then switch civics to Emancipation as the natives in the big towns are starting to get restless. Also swap out to Pacifism for the Great Merchant boost in Beijing and Guangzhou

Turn 330 (1920 AD)
Once the revolution is over convert to Islam. That was a mistake as it puts Genghis in a hissy fit and makes Isabella cautious in her relations with us. The exploring caravel reveals however that that her army consists of longbows and her navy is caravels. Not much threat from her.

Genghis comes along later and cancels the Open Borders, so in retaliation I cancel his gems deal and sell them to Julius for one more gold piece.

Turn 331 (1921 AD)
Tianjin finishes: Forge

Turn 332 (1922 AD)
Tech learned: Assembly Line
The switch to Pacifism ends up costing 30+ gpt so that should change once the Merchants are out and on their way to Rome.
Shanghai finishes: Observatory

Turn 333 (1923 AD)
Macau finishes: Courthouse
Kaifeng finishes: Grocer

Turn 334 (1924 AD)
Beijing finishes: The Statue of Liberty

Turn 335 (1925 AD)
Got Rifles and a pile of money from Julius for Physics.
1925.jpg

Tech learned: Rifling

Then picked up another chunk o change from Isabella for Education or some such.
1925_01.jpg

Beijing should build at least a couple of Islamic missionaries before moving on to the Eiffel Tower or its factory.

Turn 0 -- 1925 AD

Let's see what's going on:

Cities: Everyone's Happy, Everyone's Healthy ... so that's good. We're doing a Factory push, that's good too.

Finances: 1792, -128 a turn for Industrialism. We can afford it, might as well do it.

Civics: We're Representing, Yo. We could do Univ. Suff, but why bother? With a lack of cottages, Bureaucracy probably the best choice. Emancipation is fine, Free Market ideal. Pacifism is nice for the no upkeep and reduced troop costs; might want to consider Free Religion at some point if the diplo situation starts to collapse.

Diplomacy: Huyana is Cautious, -1 (-3 religion). Julius Caesar is Pleased, +6 (-3 religion). Genghis is Annoyed, -1 (-1 religion). Isabella is Cautious, +2 (-4 religion). Hattie is Annoyed, -4 (-4 religion), and refuses to talk since we cancelled the Open Borders. Saladin is Annoyed, -7 (-3 religion). Fortunately he ain't doing so well.
No one's at war, but I see a lot more White (Contact) than Teal (Open Borders) lines than is typical. No one has anything worth trading except Hattie with Silk. Techwise, Huyana and JC have Steel to trade. Genghis and Saladin have Military Tradition but won't trade them. Khan also has Steel but won't trade.

We're trading Dye to Isabella for Fish, and they're buying Iron from us. We're also supplying horses for free ... if Isabella gets Military Tradition I'm ending that. JC is buying gems from us, and we're trading gems to Huyana for Fur. Finally, we're paying through the teeth for Cows from Genghis. I am seriously tempted to cancel that.

Tech:
Industrialism is the last required tech, and then we're free to do what we wish! Which is, of course, heading straight for Combustion so we can use the Oil. We have no Uranium in our borders, but there's one to the North. I'm going to build a settler in Chengdu in order to build a city on the Uranium. City won't be worth much, although it can grow a little once a lighthouse goes in.

Demographics:
We're getting killed on Imports/Exports. Otherwise GNP and Manufacturing are top-notch, as is crop yield. Soldiers we're back to 4th, but that's ok -- we'll build up our soldier corps with Marines in 10 turns.

Victory conditions:
105 turns left in the game! We might want to decide how we're going to try to win. I suspect that we're not going to have enough time to do a Space Race.

...

Ok, let's start. I see if Steel is available for trade, but we don't have a comparable tech to trade for it from Huyana or JC.

Everything else looks good, I hit ENTER.

Turn 1 -- 1926 AD

Chengdu: Observatory > Settler

Turn 2 -- 1927 AD

Beijing: Islamic Missionary > Factory
Richard Whittington has been born in Beijing. We could use him to help Industrialism, but would only shave off a turn, maybe two. He's worth more in cash. Of course, we have no boat nearby so I have to hunt for a Galleon to transport him. I send him to Shanghai to wait.

I sleep the workers on the oil.

Guangzhou converts to Islam via Missionary. They're also celebrating "We Love CTIV-2" Day ... I guess they've forgiven us all that whipping, huh? :groucho:

Turn 3 -- 1928 AD

:coffee:

Turn 4 -- 1929 AD

I spit out my coffee!

ctiv2f1ei.jpg

Ok, I change my plans for the Merchant: he helps save us 2 turns on Industrialism.

I trade Electricity to JC for Steel and 260 gold.
Revolution time for a war footing: Universal Sufferage so we can spend cash. Nationhood to help with happiness that we're losing from leaving Representation. Free Religion to get our other relationships better and to also help with happiness.

Chengdu puts off Settler for Drydock.

I keep an eye on Samarkand, but there's no boats nearby. Genghis has some Frigates that are heading our way but I don't see any Galleons. This may end up being a phony war ... but we'll take Samarkand before we're through. Samarkand has 2 rifles, I start loading the Galleon with Grenadiers. I also send the Frigates already by Mongol to start harassing.

Turn 5 -- 1930 AD

One our Frigates kills off a Frigate before we get hit again and sunk.

Even with the diplo boost from Free Religion, we're not able to get any help.

DAMMIT, I totally missed a couple ships from our East. BEIJING is in danger! I upgrade troops where I can, and I have to turn down science.

I lose another frigate trying to stem an invasion

Turn 6 -- 1931 AD -- Our Darkest Hour?

Frigate defeats another Frigate. Our grenadier defeats a Cavalry. We lose a Maceman to Rifles.

Nanjing: Observatory > Drydock
Beijing: Factory > Ironclad

We lose another Frigate trying to save our fishing boats. In revenge, I take out one of theirs.

Infantry defeats Rifle.

Turn 7 -- 1932 AD -- Our Darkest Hour!

BEIJING FALLS!

...but we take it back with the help of our grenadier and an amphibious infantry *phew* ... I set it to build Ironclad which I rush. I have to hope that the Infantry can hold out against the two remaining cavalry.

We lose another Frigate though

Turn 8 -- 1933 AD

BEIJING FALLS AGAIN! The Infantry was able to hold off one Cavalry but not the other.
Fortunately, our Grenadier was able to take it back. Mongol no longer has any troops on our soil.

We kill off one of the harassing frigates ... no wait, a Galleon.

Turn 9 -- 1934 AD

Now we kill off the frigate.

Shandong: Forge > Factory

JC now has Railroad, won't trade it as it's just him with it.

I hurry a Workboat in Guangzhou

Turn 10 -- 1935 AD

We lose our Caravel to a Frigate.

Get one of the fishes back on line.

Hurry the Barracks in Beijing.

There are a couple more Frigates nearby. Not sure what they're going to do, so I've moved the frigate towards the renetted fishes because I suspect they're coming back.

Well, that was a lousy turn. We're going to have to rebuild Beijing now (fortunately it didn't lose its Factory). Not sure if we're going to have a chance at Samarkand.

We need to get more troops, more ships, more tech. 95 turns left. Good luck.

'sok, considering the mess I made last turn :crazyeye:

I only had enough time to play five turns, but here’s what I got.

Turn 345 (1935 AD)
Methos: First thing I do is search around to figure where our capitol is. Looks like its now Nanjing.
Methos: I send the two sleeping frigates in the east towards Genghis's western coast to do a little pillaging. The northern ice frigate moves to replace those two frigates on the east. The central frigate moves to help our western front.
Beijing finishes: Barracks

Turn 346 (1936 AD)
Beijing begins: Grenadier
Methos: Two of the Khan's frigates enter our waters west of Beijing.
Frigate loses to: Mongolian Frigate (8.00/8)

Turn 347 (1937 AD)
Methos: The Khan sinks our frigate who was resting on the oil.
Tech learned: Industrialism
Macau grows: 10
Kaifeng grows: 11

Turn 348 (1938 AD)
Research begun: Railroad
Shanghai grows: 13
Frigate loses to: Mongolian Frigate (3.68/8)
Frigate defeats (4.80/8): Mongolian Frigate
Frigate defeats (1.60/8): Mongolian Frigate
Frigate defeats (1.60/8): Mongolian Frigate
Galleon loses to: Mongolian Frigate (5.36/8)

Turn 349 (1939 AD)
Frigate promoted: Combat I
Frigate promoted: Flanking I
Frigate loses to: Mongolian Frigate (2.24/8)
Shanghai finishes: Factory
Chengdu finishes: Drydock
Frigate loses to: Mongolian Frigate (2.16/8)

Turn 350 (1940 AD)
Shanghai begins: Ironclad
Chengdu begins: Ironclad

I’ve got several Ironclads in the queue right now. I’ve never built them before but right now we need them, bad! I had sent a couple frigates to Mongolian waters but they got sunk before even crossing their border. We at least took out a couple of their frigates before going down.

Hatty is furious with the Khan but still won’t dow on him. She’s still not very happy with us for dropping trades with her a while back.

Capac is pleased with the Khan and JC is friendly with him. No one else is willing to even discuss joining.

I sent the boats east as 1) it was fairly close, and 2) I hoped by pillaging some of his resources it'd keep him out of our lands. I'm thinking now I should have gone west as you mentioned.
