Cumulative Geography Quiz

Okay....lets see here...

There was a port city largely built by the Dutch which was named Makassar. Can you name this city today?

Maybe easy, but I had to be there a couple weeks ago, so it makes it kind of interesting to see how many people know this (I didn't...)

~Chris

To the best of my knowledge it is still called Makassar and it is on the Indonesian island of Sulawesi, formerly known as Celebes.

Well, actually the situation is similar to Mumbai, where many locals continue to refer to it as Bombay even though official government recognition changed the name to Mumbai. So, you did pick the island and even the former name, and that is damn good, but can you retrieve the new name?

~Chris

You have been there so I must be wrong in my assumption that it was still called Makassar.

I have to cheat and look it up, please accept my humble defeat and have mercy....

Yes, I heard about that one. The only real big city on Celebes.
Something with Pandang, but there was some word still in front of it, can´t remember it now, though!
Anyway, it´s on the southern tip of the island.
:D

Well, I guess beammeuppy takes this one, because identifying where it is may be the most challenging. The city is now officially called Ujung Pandang, and Lucky did get half of it. So I will let you guys sparr on who selects the next question.

~Chris

Let me take this one and lucky the next or so?

What is the name of the desert partly in Paraguay and partly in Bolivia?

The border is known as the El Chaco desert. There also once was a Chaco-War (somewhen in the 1930s) between Bolivia and Paraguay in that desert.
It was the bloodiest conflict in South-America (except the initial exploration and colonizatio) and the strategies employed there were also later part of Rommels desert warfare in North-Africa.
:D

Lucky is more than right. I am not sure if it is the same war but Paraguay got itself involved in triple war against Bolivia, Brazil and Argentina if I remember well.

The Atacama desert is in the northern part of Chile.

Lucky, you are next!

Well, I only know about Argentina supporting Paraguay because of the finencial investments there, not sure about Brazil.

So let´s see:

How many countries have a land border with Russia? Name them (at least most of them ;))!

Can´t think of something better.
:D

Finland, Estonia, Lithuania, Lativia, Ukraine, Kazakstan, Mongolia, China, North Korea, Armenia, Georgia, Azerbaijan, and also Belarus.

And Poland at the Kaliningrad (Konigsberg) enclave

I checked the map, Michiel was right. I had thought Belarus separated Russia and Poland completely.

philippe, kyrgyzstan only borders Kazakhstan, nor Russia.

and Armenia doesn't border Russia either.

I think it is my turn now. Which countries' names begin with an 'a', but don't end with 'a'?

Since Lucky posted the question, you have to wait for Lucky to tell who's right and announce the next turn. And since "Michael was right," HE should have the next turn. But, again, you have to wait for Lucky.

well, i think i answered most of the countries, as the question wanted. but i could wait for lucky.

Why on earth should mcdh wait for lucky, since he after his correct answer
checked it from map?
