Current (SVN) development discussion thread

Oops... that's better than what I said. Guess I should continue to be more careful.

I didn't mean that it would be ahistorical, or even a bad thing, rather that with the Noria as described it would be a very powerful position.

The Moors didn't have an independent Emirate in Spain until 756 C.E.

So that's probably the date you should shoot for.

Or if you want an earlier date 711 C.E. (when the Caliphate first incorporated Al-Andalus as a province).

Yes the Moors should probably spawn in 700 or 710 and Spain as kingdom of Leon perhaps slightly later than currently, possibly in the early 900s (or if you consider the Kingdom of the Asturias the current 722 could be a good one).

Been mentioned in a different thread. Will be fixed in the next commit.

New commit is up, containing the Moors.

Dang, and I was hoping to get one more Spain game in before... :)

Okay, initial thoughts:
The new Madrid should in some way have a river going by it. All medieval Christian civilizations should start on a river, Spain is no exception.

Spain and Moors should start at war as to make the Reconquista at least be attempted. I think it is already like this, but for some reason war on spawn does not ever seem like a sure thing in my games. Too often the two AI civilizations will live grumpily together but avoid war.

Barcelona should either flip to Spain or get always taken by the Moors. The Reconquista was a joint effort between all of the Kingdoms in Iberia, and it is no use to the player Spain when they have to go into an ugly unrealistic war with France to gain all of Iberia.
Either that, or add minor civ Burgundy for both France and Spain to go to war with, an idea I don't like, but would more than the current situation.

Also, wouldn't it be easier to start the Moors with a galley rather than having one flip 85% of the time?
And, could you encourage AI Moors to at least attempt to build La Mezquita?
Just noticed after seeing Taoism, make Barcelona Catholic from the start.
And in addition, I think the need for North African Barbs (Land and Water) is reduced with the addition of the Moors.

I agree with these points, I think the Moors need a 90% chance of making La Mezquita in Cordoba.

Also, I know a few of us started complaining about the colors of countries. I, for one, now appreciate Poland being pink. But I think the vikings should go back to the original light blue they were.

Vikings don't work light blue for most/many of us. We get the color of doom (which is olive: olive green background with red foreground).

Also, the new Madrid has scary production. Sistine Chapel in 5 turns on Epic with the Moor UP and 7 without seems a little quick for me.

What's the historical reason for the 3 West African cites UHV ? Did a Moorish dynasty actually try to take over this part of the world, or is it just to make the UHV more interesting ?

PS : the Moors are pretty fun to play BTW, and it's going to be even better with the Camel gunner's ability to cross the desert faster.

Now downloading newest version...
Is Morocco a good place to settle a city?
With a few food resources and grassland or plains, and not an useless desert?

I think the new Madrid already is very powerful, as noted below.

Spain and Moors should start at war as to make the Reconquista at least be attempted. I think it is already like this, but for some reason war on spawn does not ever seem like a sure thing in my games. Too often the two AI civilizations will live grumpily together but avoid war.
They have a 75% chance to start at war which the Spanish AI usually will pursue until the Moors are driven off Iberia. But it doesn't always happen, which is fine by me.

Barcelona should either flip to Spain or get always taken by the Moors. The Reconquista was a joint effort between all of the Kingdoms in Iberia, and it is no use to the player Spain when they have to go into an ugly unrealistic war with France to gain all of Iberia.

AI Spain flips Barcelona. For player Spain I wanted to create a more realistic scenario where you actually have to unite the Iberian peninsula, including the Kingdom of Aragon. I think you're referring to how France often captures Barcelona, but that can be addressed in other ways.

Also, wouldn't it be easier to start the Moors with a galley rather than having one flip 85% of the time?
They already start with a lot of stuff so I thought having them build their galley themselves couldn't hurt.

And, could you encourage AI Moors to at least attempt to build La Mezquita?
Yes, and they usually do, but Arabia pursues it like crazy so they never manage it. I'm currently trying to make Arabia like it less.

Just noticed after seeing Taoism, make Barcelona Catholic from the start.
Done.

You're probably right, but I want to address the barbarians as a whole later on, which is better than changing single aspects of it.

Depends on how many cities there are in the vicinity. But you're right, it's quite the production site, although I never changed anything to the spot ;)

Uh... My Moors starts in Antartica :(
3000 BC, Monarch.
I'll see what's wrong there.

What's the historical reason for the 3 West African cites UHV ? Did a Moorish dynasty actually try to take over this part of the world, or is it just to make the UHV more interesting ?
Yes! The Almoravid dynasty collapsed the Ghana Empire and generally raided West Africa to get control of the gold produced there. Fighting Mali isn't entirely accurate but the best approximation we can get. And of course it also makes the UHV more interesting :)

PS : the Moors are pretty fun to play BTW, and it's going to be even better with the Camel gunner's ability to cross the desert faster.
Great. The Camel Gunner fix has just been committed.
