CVN1 - Not So Corrupted Romans

Hi, I am wondering how feasible it is to capture the great library at some point.

Legions are great units even in the middle ages. If we upgrade/produce enough we may have a chance of capturing GL from the AI. We don't even need to keep the city for more than 1 turn. The timing should also be as late as possible (to get more techs) and not too late when the AI has rifles.

I haven't looked at the save, and don't know who built it. Just some thinking. I haven't done this kind of things either, but I've seen some peole did it before.

The only units we need are legions and cats.

The English built the GL, and are likely somewhere south of Egypt and Sumeria, maybe near Arabia. We'd need to know where they are before we can plan an attack.

I know I'm about an hour ahead of the 48, but I was kinda thinking I might be able to grab this tonight ....

Preturn- Lower sci rate to gain 10 more gpt and still have CoL in 2.

The tech situation is not good. We are far behind except for the Koreans and Hitties.

OK, got it. Will post again in a couple hours.

Pre turn – Damn we are way behind! Gonna take some serious doing (or warring) to catch up. First order of business is drop sci rate. We’re running –20 gpt and still 6 on construction. Looking over the Hittites, I’m not sure how Hattusha has avoided those volcanos, but I do know we’ll want those horses at some point. I see one more city loc all the way north.

*hits enter*

Veii worker -> library. Cumae grows and riots. Change to temple, no need for granary ATM. Sumerians, Greeks, and French building Sistines. Sumerians also building knights templar.

130 bc (1) – We lose our horses, but that doesn’t seem to be important right now, so I don’t try to renew.

Rome settler -> spear.

110 bc (2) – Nothing noteworthy.

Hispalis temple -> library. Viro temple -> library.

90 bc (3) – I see an Egyptian galley, probably headed for the one small opening. Not on my watch!!

Lugdunum temple -> market. Paris completes knights templar AND Sistines.

70 bc (4) – After my blocking, Egyptian bastards turn back.

Rome spear -> market.

50 bc (5) – not much, settler in position. I am wondering why we’re irrigating grassland in despotism. :hmm:

Cumae temple -> market. Neapolis library -> market. We need money!! Pompeii temple -> library.

30 bc (6) – Brundisium founded, starts temple.

Egyptians sneak attack us in Viroconium!! Our brave warrior defends successfully and gets redlined. We can’t afford any embassies right now, so I guess we won’t be getting help. Byz harbor -> barracks.

10 bc (7) – We have 2 legions just outside Hieranconpolis, so they move in. We have no other troops close, but I pull a couple more legions from near Korean city.

10 ad (8) – Construction in 1. For the first time this set, we have a profitable economy.
We get construction. I start Engineering for no reason other than the Arabs don’t have it yet. I doubt that will be the case when its done, but you never know, I guess.

30 ad (9) – we meet a Japanese galley. They’re just as far ahead as everyone else at this time. Our two vet legions both defeat reg Egyptian spears. Both lose 2 hp. Best defender showing is an archer. Our Golden age begins. We meet the Maya. They have Republic, and not currency, but they’re not willing to trade.

50 ad (10) – Egyptian city showing a spear again. Seeing that he isn’t yet fortified, and deciding you only live once, I press the attack with the wounded Legions. The first legion wins and promotes even though he was hit by the archer bombard. Second one defeats archer. Hieranconpolis is ours, should we decide to keep it.

So there’s my ten. There is an Egyptian galley north of our lands, undoubtedly going to drop 1 or 2 units. The cities near there don’t have great defense yet. I did not attack the Hittites because I wanted out of despotism for our golden age. Egypt didn’t give me the choice. We are probably down at least half of the middle ages techs. We may want to consider the zero research approach, even though I just built some libraries. Corruption or not, we can’t keep up with the ai research.

Anyhow, here’s the
save.

Pity about the Despotic GA, but we couldn't help it. Did we meet the English yet? We need to know where they are so we can see if attacking them and taking the Great Library would be a viable strategy. In any case, we need to go after the Hittites ASAP, both for Horses and the additional land. (Size matters far more in this SG than usual.)

Got it.

The GA will help us get over the hump to the next Age. Would have taken way too long otherwise.

Will be having some fun hacking at the Hittites, the Egyptians and probably the Koreans with Legions.

The problem with buying techs from these guys is there is a very steep devaluation curve applied when trying to broker out at 4th or 5th. So unless you can afford to pay cash, the faster you run the behinder you get. And every gpt payment they get just gets added to an already ungodly pile of uncorrupted cash.

We need to take every step we can to keep the opponents gpt minimized.

Maybe if we kill enough Egyptian units that come over on Galleys we can get a small gpt payment for Peace. I definetely agree that we need to cut down on their gpt.

The Koreans are making me nervous. They have galleys parked along our shores and a swordsman wandering around the center of the island.

Sell them Construction for 78g. Not much but least I get something out of them before they declare war.

I can buy Republic for circa 1100(~55gpt) from almost anybody. If I shut off science that leaves 74 GA enhanced gpt and 19 turns to run in the GA. If I buy it now I can get some insurance from an Arabian sneak attack. (There is a small Arab ville on the NE coast) The mil advisor says we are about equal in military so leave it on the table for now. Reviewing the towns shows that none are large enough to provide decent unit support in either Republican or Monarchical governments and the lack of marketplaces in the larger towns a serious drawback. Forget about dealiing until after Hittite havoc.

Shut off research to build cash. (Thanks for the advice, SesnOW). Decide to wait until markets are finished in largest towns and some warriors upgraded to legions to declare war

T1 70AD
Upgrade warriors to legions

T2 90AD
Garrison coastal towns

T3 110AD
Upgrade warriors. Marketplaces finished 10spt and 15spt cities start building reinforcements. Make peace with Cleopatra and receive tribute of 2g and 10gpt.

"And Caesar's spirit, ranging for revenge,
With Ate by his side come hot from hell,
Shall in these confines with a monarch's voice
Cry 'Havoc,' and let slip the dogs of war;"

and the march south begins:

Hittite defenders fall like nine-pins. Two spears and four warriors are slain, one legionaire promotes to elite, though wounded, and one is killed, the remainder advance through the hills. Advancing spearmen capture two slaves.

T4 130AD
Legions continue to advance but more slowly as two legionaires and an archer are lost to Hittite spears in the hills above Ugarit. Three more Hittite spears and a warrior die however. Reinforcements are moved into Pisae from Cumae and Veii.

Hittite warrior kills crippled legion.

T5 150AD
Reinforcements move out from Pisae and kill Hittite spear and warrior. Legions at Ugariit attack the city killing two spears, winning promotion to elite and the city falls.

The first Hittite swordsman appears.

T6 170
Hittite sword kills a legion outside Ugaritt but spear above Hattusha kills attacking Hittite sword.

T8 190
Lose two elite legions attack Hittite sword in hills above Hattusha

T9 210
Manuevering and ugrading warriors. Regular legions are useful in garrisons on coasts in towns with walls. Hittites sue for peace but have nothing to offer, except two little villes on the islands to the south.

Hittie warrior promotes garrison legion to elite, but Hittie archer kills wounded legion fortified on hill. Hittite swords and spears move to cover Hattusha and into posion to attack Ugaritt.

T10 230
Vet legion kills sword approaching Ugaritt and promotes. Vet sword kills archer.
Legion dies attacking spear at Hattusha, spear crippled. Second legion takes town with three slaves.

T11 250
Gathering forces at Ugaritt, garrisoning Hattusha. Reinforcements arriving in steady stream at Pisae.

Campaign Path:

The combination of marketplaces and GA is really paying off. Treasury is 301 and growing by 50% for nine more turns. There are tech deals which will move us along in the MA and get us Republic and maybe some more money. Monotheism, Feudalism and Engineering are all available for ~50gpt. Can then be traded for Republic and hopefully some cash. Suggest doing so before GA ends then revolting to Republic once it's over. Until then keep the science slider at zero to build a bank to carry us across the anarchy period. Core towns should be of a size by then that unit support will not be a problem and the income boost from Republic to a commercial civ should allow us to carry on carrying on.

The Hittite ExFor will be ready to roll on down the middle of the Hittite lands towards Harran, their iron source on the interturn. Jungles and hills and mountains provide excellent cover for legions. A couple of spears out of Cumae, which has suffered from malaria epidemics, and is building a harbor to get the citzens out of the jungle, would augment the force nicely. Need to gang the workforce in the south to clear jungle and forests.

Here's my two cent's worth:

Monarchy won't do much for us other than remove the despot food penalty so the cities can grow a little faster. Republic will boost our commerce and since we are Commercial and have almost no Corruption the extra gold coins won't disappear. And the more uncorrupted gold, the better our research capabilities.

Finally, WW can be managed in a Republic, especially since I don't think we are going to leave the island to fight our battles for a while (for one thing we have no navy), and we have the marketplaces to deal with contentment should an untimely war break out.

I would vote for Republic as well.

It's really hard to pass up the extra commerce, especially since I think we're gonna be buying/stealing the vast majority of our techs from here on.

Also, as Bede said, I don't see any large scale wars in the immediate future.
