ARGENTINA INVADES BRAZIL

infantry.jpg

Argentine troops organize outside Rio Verde before moving to engage the Brazilian Southeastern Army.

Goiânia, People’s Republic of Brazil - Freshly trained and reequipped forces of the Argentine 1st Army poured over the border into the newly established People’s Republic of Brazil. Their target was to eliminate the Brazilian Amazonian Army, but the army’s movement towards the coast forced a change of plans. The Argentines moved to take the Brazilian capital of Brasilia, partly to deal a massive morale blow to the communists and partly to try and knock out the enemy’s offensive air capabilities. The Brazilian Southeastern Army quickly moved to intercept the invaders near the town of Rio Verde, but they were unprepared for the size and strength of the Argentine force.

The clearly larger and more disciplined Argentine army booted the Brazilians out of their positions in Rio Verde and back towards Brasilia. In the outskirts of Goiânia, a mere 150km from Brasilia, the Brazilian forces began to dig in and subsequently evacuate the populous city. Brazilian commanders hope to stall or stop the superior Argentine forces with brutal urban combat. Argentine forces are now within a kilometer of Brazilian positions and outside the protection of their air forces. Upon reaching the outskirts of the city, the 1st Army has been hit by Brazilian artillery strikes and air strikes, but this has done little to slow them down.

The Argentine government has made few mentions of the invasion but one televised speech by President Carmen has stated the actions of Brazilian socialists as a threat to the Argentine state and people. Regardless of what is known or not known about the invasion, the Argentine people are pretty supportive of it, many claiming it should have come sooner.

REPUBLIC OF BRAZIL NO MORE

carrier.jpg

The remaining ships of the 1st Fleet, including its flagship carrier, anchor in Rio de Janeiro.

Rio de Janeiro, People’s Republic of Brazil - The Brazilian People’s Movement finally managed to wrest control of the entire nation from the clutches of the corrupt Honorato regime. The Amazonian Army, moving from near the Argentine border, struck the Republican “secure zone” to liberate Rio de Janeiro and Belo Horizonte, eliminate the Atlantic Army, and possibly intercept President Honorato before he flees the country. The army encountered Republican forces in Divinopolis where they were promptly encircled and destroyed. The Southeastern Army moved into southern Brazil and captured Curitiba before being sent northward unexpectedly. At sea, the Republican 1st Fleet found itself dealing with mass mutinies which lead to full blown naval battle between the former comrades. The Socialist mutineers won the day, and several Republican ships were surrendered and taken to port, including the fleet’s flagship carrier.

Perhaps even more important than the collapse of the Republican military were the events surrounding Ricardo Honorato de Moraes’ escape. Upon the news of naval mutinies, an airliner was procured and flown to Rio de Janeiro’s airport to transport the evacuees to Argentina. While evacuees were boarding the aircraft, a gunman, believed to be a policeman, opened fire on Honorato and other government officials with his service rifle. Five men were killed and four were injured, including Honorato, who was rushed onto the aircraft with bullet wounds in the left leg and chest. He is presently in an intensive care unit in a Buenos Aires hospital.

With the Republican forces crushed and their leader in exile, President Vinicius Coscioni has moved into Brasilia and has quickly begun carrying out his executive duties, the first of which was defaulting on national debt. The whole of the nation’s population and economy has been brought back into the fold allowing for a sort of normalcy. However, the nation must now turn to pressing issues from abroad.

SERBS BRUISE EUROS

serbianarmor.jpg

A Serbian tank, one of the few in the area, rushes toward Novi Sad to stop the European invasion.

Skopje, European Federation - The European Federation started the month’s activities with the invasion of neighboring Serbia. The Serbian nation, which watched its west Balkan neighbors fall like dominoes, was well prepared for the coming war and had been mobilized for nearly a month. European warplanes were tasked with neutralizing Serbia’s air and land defenses by way of the destruction of military airfields, weapons platforms, and other targets along the Bosnian border. This proved to be disastrous as aircraft were blown out of the sky by mobile and long-range anti-air batteries and a surprisingly large amount of Serbian fighters. Eventually, after several days of little activity, European land forces moved in. Das Altes Heer crossed into southern Serbia by way of Macedonia, after enduring a long trek across the Mediterranean. Fighting was brutal with the majority of the enemy’s armor being concentrated in the area, bringing the primarily German army to a grinding halt. Support from the Southern Fleet helped prevent a Serbian counter attack which forced the two sides into a stalemate.

A second European assault was made in the north by L'Ancienne Armée, which was a bit more successful, gained valuable ground and a good portion of the road to Belgrade. The Europeans duped the Serbian forces along the western border by setting up a mock army to resemble the L'Ancienne Armée, which at that point was moving into Hungary. A sudden thrust into the Vojvodina region caused defending forces to scramble to stop the Europeans. The two armies met in the city of Novi Sad almost simultaneously and a massive battle for the town ensued. House to house fighting brought about no advances, so each side turned to bombarding the enemy’s controlled areas with rockets and aerial bombs. The Europeans managed to push the Serbs across the Danube and now barely control the city which has taken a worse beating from both sides than it did by NATO bombers in 1999.

At the moment, European ground forces are being held in southern Kosovo and north of the Danube by very well equipped and determined Serbian forces. The Serb Air Force has control of a majority of the skies, but European forces have managed to maintain some control over their seized territories. Civilian casualties have been fairly substantial in the populated areas around the war zones. This is attributed to the inability for adequate evacuations to occur before the European advance. However, many in the central parts of the country have refused to abandon their homes, especially in Belgrade and Pristina, and significant portions of the population have voluntarily enlisted to help fend off the dreaded Europeans.

INDOCHINESE WAR RAGES ON

fighterq.jpg

A fighter from the Republican Air Guard leaves a Chinese airstrip to search northern Laos for Vietnamese aircraft.

Bac Lieu, Occupied Socialist Republic of Vietnam - This month saw escalation in the fighting between the Vietnamese and the allied Chinese and Indonesians. At the moment, both Chinese and Vietnamese are experiencing fighting on their respective homelands which brings about a much stronger reaction from the masses. The month’s fighting began with a massive Chinese air assault, whose sole objective was to eliminate the Vietnamese Sao Do wing, which had proved a nuisance last month. No Vietnamese aircraft were found in the air however, this would change later, but the Chinese aircraft encountered many well hidden anti-air batteries, which downed several warplanes.

In Burma, the Chinese 42nd Army, with support from the Wang Hai air wing and the South Sea Fleet, began mercilessly pounding the Vietnamese 1st Corps by firing as much ordinance they could as fast as possible. Complete carnage replaced entire swathes of what were once Vietnamese defensive lines and Chinese troops poured into the gaps in the defenses, hoping to overrun the enemy’s positions and recapture Mandalay. The charge was barely held back by the Vietnamese who suffered severe casualties in the process. It seems nothing can stop the Chinese from taking Mandalay in the coming month, especially not the Vietnamese 1st Corps, who are now vastly outnumbered and outgunned. Perhaps the only benefit of the fighting for the Vietnamese was the growth of insurgent activities behind enemy lines. The Burmese Way Movement has gathered significant support around Yangon and may liberate the city in the near future.

Along near the border of China’s Yunnan province, the Vietnamese 4th Corps began a counteroffensive to push the recently halted Chinese 27th Army Group out of friendly territory. The Vietnamese moved very quickly, giving the Chinese no time to set up adequate defenses. Instead, the 27th Army Group attempted to eliminate as many enemy combatants as possible while trying to grind them to a halt. The 4th Corps managed to limit Chinese successes however due to their specialization in the tropical environment. The offensive’s success put Vietnamese commanders at a crossroads…situate themselves to close Burma off from China or move to attack Kunming, the closest, large, Chinese city. An attack on Kunming was deemed the most beneficial, and the 4th Corps moved north. Chinese troops soon realized where the enemy was headed and began desperately trying to stop them from striking the city, but to no avail. Vietnamese missiles began peppering the city and the surrounding area, dealing damage to military installations (especially airfields), industrial sectors, and residential areas alike, as soon as the city was in range, and are continuing to press forward, threatening capture of the city. The attack has caused uproar across China.

In the south, a new front was opened up by the Indonesians, who executed an amphibious invasion of the Vietnamese homeland. Troops from the TNI AD - West, known for carrying out notoriously ill-planned invasions, were transported to the Mekong Delta by the Western Fleet whereupon they were fired on by what was left of Vietnam’s coastal defenses in the area. A fair number of landing craft were sunk, but support from the Indonesian Eastern Fleet drastically reduced the amount of casualties that could have been. Upon landing outside of the city of Bac Lieu, the landing troops met fierce resistance, not from professional soldiers, but civilians armed with military grade small arms and support weapons, who harassed the Indonesian invaders at every opportunity. Their efforts didn’t necessarily kill many enemies but did certainly slowed them down and provided coordinates to the main threat to the Indonesians, the Sao Do Wing. The Sao Do Wing, after having been previously grounded to avoid engagements with the Chinese air force, quickly sprung into action flying sorties against Indonesian invasion troops and dropping bombs on vehicles and convoys. A handful of fighters were downed by Indonesian carrier based aircraft. Indonesian forces now hold the city of Bac Lieu and the major cities of Can Tho, Rach Gia, and Ho Chi Minh City are all within range of their forces, all of which could fall if Vietnamese troops aren’t dispatched to protect them.

In China, protests have broken out in response to the attacks on Kunming. Many are accusing government and military officials from not taking proper steps to protect them against the Vietnamese and that special care must be taken to keep the fighting off Chinese soil. Others are stating the declaration of war against the Vietnamese is bringing more harm than good, since no socialist happenings have been seen in China, and if there were no war, no fighting would be happening in China. In Vietnam however, many have rallied around the flag after the invasion by the Indonesians which both increased industrial output and the promoted the formation of militia groups to help stop the Indonesian menace and protect the Communist ideology.

Congolese On Edge

Ndola, Occupied Zambia - The South African conquest of Southern Africa, called the “Unity War” by leaders in Pretoria, has finally gained the attention of one of the continent’s bigger players, the Democratic Republic of the Congo. The invasion of neighboring Zambia has put the Congolese armed forces on high alert as Kinshasa fears that it might be the next target. After the fall of Ndola, which is near the Zambia-DRC border, Congolese forces began taking up positions near Lubumbashi and on the highways leading to the central part of the country. In Zambia, only a handful of defense forces remain and all are situated near the capital of Lusaka.

Cuba Formally Annexed

Havana, United Mexican States - After months of fighting Communists and a shorter length of time arguing amongst themselves, the United States and Mexico have agreed on the partition of the island of Cuba. The Mexicans have control of the central parts of the island, from the La Habana region to Las Tunas, which includes the city of Havana. The Americans control the two tips of the island, the first being the Pinar del Rio region and the second being the Holguin, Granma, Guantanamo, and Santiago de Cuba regions. The city of Holguin is under their control. In Mexico, people aren’t pleased with the deal, as many believe Mexicans did most of the fighting and dying, and should thus get the lion’s share of the island. This claim has been echoed by a group called the MDC (Cuban Dissidence Movement), who is armed and supported by the Mexican government.

Political Unrest in Ukraine

Kiev, Ukraine - Serious arguments and accusations were made during a meeting in the Ukrainian Parliament this month in regards to corruption, parliamentary elections, and the will of the people. The Party of Regions claimed the Tymoshenko Party, the majority party, has been negligent in carrying out campaign goals and their duties as civil servants as well as claiming the higher ups of the party are accepting payoffs from foreign governments, which are in turn used to suppress the will of the Ukrainian people. The heads of the Party of Regions have, on behalf of the Ukrainian people, demanded that emergency elections be held in the near future to oust the “dirty, twisted gangsters that extort the masses” and have made serious threats to shut down the government if no election happens. Little has been said by the Tymoshenko Party in response to the accusations and threats.

Indonesian Communists Silenced, MRLA Still Loud As Ever

Alor Setar, Malaysia - Before setting out to kill Communists in Vietnam, the TNI AD - West swept up the last of the revolts on Sumatra, thus ending the riots and fighting across Indonesia. Across the Malacca Straits however, there has been a surge in the number of Communist fighters in Peninsular Malaysia. Malaysian troops are struggling to deal with the growing numbers of well armed, well trained, and determined revolutionaries situated in the northern part of the territory. Many are believed not to be part of the MRLA at all, but part of the Thai PLA and possibly the Khmer Rouge, but both are considered to be just as dangerous, if not more so, than the local brew of commies. A challenge for government forces is the fact that the Communists retreat across the border into Vietnamese controlled Thailand, where safe houses and bases obviously exist. The Malaysian armed forces dare not cause an international incident and drag itself into the inferno that is the Indochinese War even though the situation is extremely dire. Reports are also coming in that the Indonesian government offered to rid some of the insurgents from Malaysian Borneo if they allowed the TNI AD - East land access to Vietnamese Brunei. The deal was rejected because Malaysian officials believed the Indonesians, who had attempted to conquer Malaysia just a few months ago, would not be doing much against the MRLA.

Officers Tried In Moscow Tribunals

Moscow, Russian Federation - Following the public outcry over the atrocities committed by Russian soldiers against Armenian and Azerbaijani civilians, the Kremlin took swift action to right wrongs and crack heads in an effort to clean up their image. Over sixty soldiers were charged with several offenses ranging from disorderly conduct to rape, murder and treason. More surprising, however, was the indictment of several officers of high rank, including one Colonel who apparently green-lit the defilement of numerous convents in Armenia as well as the rape and murder of 23 nuns. All of the officers found guilty were stripped of their rank and imprisoned, and many of the soldiers are currently serving time in labor camps in the Caucasus to “serve the people they wronged”. The lightest sentence handed out was 2 ½ years of hard labor, while the most severe was a 36 year prison term.

Fall of Qatar Isolates Bahrain

Doha, United Islamic Republic - The Army of Babylon continued its activities the Persian Gulf this month by pouncing on another oil rich nation, Qatar. The invasion seemed to be going swimmingly until the whole of the Qatari armored corps was found holed up in the capital. Fierce fighting ensued, but the UIR troops won the day albeit suffering moderate casualties. The capture of Qatar has effectively cut off all land routes out of Bahrain via UIR control of both the King Fahd and Qatar Bahrain Causeways. The small, extremely wealthy nation has begun gearing up its military to take on the inevitable UIR invasion.

Rockets Fall on Manila as Japs Return

Lucena, Occupied Philippines - Commanders heading the Japanese war in the Philippines hatched a new plan this month, pulling all their forces out of the southern and central portions of the archipelago and shifting them northwards to the island of Luzon. The second invasion was tasked with attacking the source of the enemy insurgency and cutting off enemies on the central islands from supplies and support. The massive Japanese invasion force, spearheaded by the Army of Honshu, landed near the city of Lucena and encountered significant resistance. Support from both Japanese fleets and the land based warplanes on Mindoro Island broke the defenders backs and allowed for the capture of the island’s eastern regions and a strong push towards Manila. Expecting the Japanese to storm the capital, PKP forces dug in and prepared for the fight of their lives. Instead, the Japanese partially encircled them and began a relentless bombardment from land, sea, and air as to soften the enemy for next month’s assault.

Really sorry about the over-one-month gap between the deadline and the update...my summer has been hectic and will continue to be so. I plan on getting this into a better schedule, but it won't compare to how smoothly the first few turns flowed (which I hope to get back to once I return to university).

I have a horrible feeling that I missed some parts in the update. I still have everyone's orders, so feel free to challenge me if you think something didn't happen and I will check said orders and possibly my AIM chat logs.

@ Omega124 - I decided to throw you and Terrance a bone in regards to Cuba. I never got your orders, so I had a feeling I was screwing you both over accidentally. Take that whole situation how you want.

@ NedimNapoleon - You are confirmed as the PRB (People's Republic of Brazil). You are very lucky to have gotten a clean slate to work with.

With Terrance dropping out, the United States are now open. I did have a reservation for them back when Terrance pondered quitting near the deadline, and that reservation will stand for the standard 48 hours. After that time, the US is truly open to anyone who wants it. In addition, Nigeria is still open and I would absolutely love anyone who picked them up. Seriously, they are in such a nice position, I'm surprised no one has jumped on them yet.

Disregard what was in this space before. YOU SAW NAHSINK!

Stats should be up by tonight.

Deadline for Update 8 orders is Friday, July 29th at 8:00pm EST

I did not agree to this! Terrance in fact said nothing about any partition plan! Damn Canadian libel...

I was going to mention this in the OOC. I thought I'd throw you both a bone since it was a cooperative clusterf**k in Cuba. You both can always reorganize the split this turn or something like that. Also, the political situation there is EXTREMELY interesting. If you care for details, PM me.

Well, the United Mexican States rejects the partition, due to the fact it is introduced by Alien Space Bats, and not by the two nations in question.

Good update Darth, let's see the map :D

The Yankee-Mexican alliance continues to be an example for all of us to follow.

I sent my orders, without the Mexicans in put on joint projects, again.

My incessant attempts to call the Mexican Leaders have been all redirected by its annoying automated answering machine and/or old secretaries. Besides, we gave you some extra concessions, but Nooooo, that isn't good enough.

EDIT: And I suppose my fixed orders came too late? At least tell me; the changes are mostly minor and don't even count for a single paragraph, even.
