Patriarchal Epistle to the Gibraltarians

---

To: The Church in Gibraltar
CC: All the Bishops of the Orthodox Catholic Church
From: The Patriarch in Jerusalem

-

I grant my Apostolic Blessings and greetings to you my brother bishop and to all the faithful of Gibraltar

From your letter brother, it appears that there are two main issues that have come to your mind, and which require correction and clarification from the Patriarchate. Firstly is the issue of the verse in Matthew 16: 17-19 and its interpretation in regards to the charism of the Patriarch of Jerusalem, and the second is your concerns as to the beliefs of the Russians.

On the First concern, the Patriarch of Jerusalem, as the head of the primeval see of Christianity, is successor of the Apostle Peter. This as you well know being because Jerusalem, first of all sees was where he resided in office. The Apostles Church still stands in the Holy Quarter of Jerusalem to this day as a firm testament as to this truth. Now this as you well say indeed gives the Patriarch as successor of Peter the power of binding and loosing grantd by our Lord, and quite rightly it is retained and no accomadation is made for this divine truth.

For know that the power of excommunication remains solely with the Patriarch of Jerusalem, who posesses these very instruments through which the door to heaven can be opened and shut. Furthermore I would like to remind the Church in Gibraltar that the Patriarch of Moscow has recognised the primeval primacy of the Patriarch of Jerusalem, who has greater position of honour than the Russian Patriarch and acknowledges his universal faculties. The Patriarch of Jerusalem is singular in his unique position as temporal head of the whole Church in addition to the particular church to which you naturally belong (the Moscow Patriarch heading his Particular church within the one Orthodox Catholic Church). The Russian patriarch is equal in stature, but he is unambiguously under the Jerusalem Patriarchate in honour and lacks the petrine supremacy of that office, there is no dualism involved in this union.

On your second concern as to Russian beliefs, The reason this union was possible was precisely because the Russian Church was identical in belief with the Orthodox Catholic Church. Their theology is identical, their faith is the same, their internal structure is indistinguishable. The sole differentiation was in their separation from The Holy Church which was perhaps a product of the Red Death and their geographical isolation. The russians were merely schismatic, and not heretical, this made union a divine necessity in accordance with the will of God. I therefore assure you once again out of paternal concern, that there is No change in the teachings of the Church, nor is there any change in the sacred rites or in any way in regards to the way the faithful are to live their lives. The Church's teachings are timeless and complete and are never to be accomadated with, and you can go to your faithful confident that Gods will has been done, and that the faith has not been dispensed with. Indeed I point you to the very verse you quoted where Christ promised himself his Church that the gates of hell will not prevail against it. Have faith brother, Christ himself assured us that the Church he founded would never fall to the powers of the enemy and fall into error. The Church is infallible and I beg of you to have faith in this divine promise.

I urge my brother bishop in gibraltar therefore to have faith, and to hold to his vow of holy obedience to the patriarchate. I pray that I have adequately dispelled the misperceptions the enemy has placed in your mind in a bid to sow division, and ask that you explain to your people the truth of this union and dispel all errors that would seek to divide us. Combat the attempts of Satan to divide and the weaken the Church brother, for God will judge the schismatic who departs from the true Church most harshly, and for the good of souls you must strive to ensure the truth is taught to all those whom have listened to the whispers of the demons and to the statements of the enemies of the Church.

Yours in Christ

The Patriarch of Jerusalem.

Media Release: Open Letter from the Bishop of Gibraltar to the Patriarch of Jerusalem

To: His Holiness, The Patriarch of Jerusalem
CC:The Priest of Gibraltar for Orthodox-Christians
From: The Bishop of Gibraltar.

We thank his holiness for his wisdom in this matter. I will instruct our Priests to pass on the fact that our Orthodox-Christian brothers and sisters are indeed of the same faith and have submitted to the authority of your Holiness, and will summon the Orthodox-Christian Priest to visit me and have this matter resolved. Can I call on you to grant me permission to unite our Orthodox-Christians under my authority in Gibraltar, and ultimately to yourself. We can then all work together to strengthen our faith in these uncertain times.

Yours in Christ

The Bishop of Gibraltar

I am glad that the matters of concern to you my brother bishop have been clarified satisfactorily. As to the matter of the small community of russian-rite Orthodox Catholics in your jurisdiction, they naturally are part of the particular sui-iuris russian church under the general jurisdiction of the russian rite canonically the Russian Patriarchs. However since the community in Gibraltar is so small as to be outside of a pre-existing russian see they are according to canon law under your particular (ooc: at a local level) pastoral care in the absence of a russian rite jurisdiction in the region.

Yours in Christ

Patriarch of Jerusalem

Spoiler Response to excommunication :
From: Prince Jaume IV of Catalonia
To: Duke Raymond XII of Toulouse

Most appreciated sir,
We have written this letter to express our discontent and disappointment with your astonishing decision of excommunicating us. First of all, because of the injustice in the action itself, and secondly because of the injustice underlaying the fact that the action has been executed upon us, fervent followers of yours.

The action is unjust in that it has no religious motivation, but merely political. You are surely looking to destabilize our beloved country and people, because the Court has decided that the core beliefs by which the Principality of Catalonia is ruled are more in accord with Orthodox Catholicism. Thus, this action has no purpose but to undermine the connivance in Catalan lands among the different religions. That is cruel and manipulative, and does not adhere to the beliefs that, to my understanding, Catharism holds.

Similarly, this action is unjust for it has been cast upon us, Prince Jaume IV of Catalonia, whilst ours was solely the decision to cede the power to the Court. Certainly, in the Court there are three branches, one of which has been, until now, composed solely by Cathars, your priests, and even these have voted for Orthodox Catholicism. Meanwhile, we did keep our Cathar beliefs, for those are the ones that we believe individuals should hold.

But now that you have excommunicated us, you have opened my eyes. I now see that a church cannot rule over the things of this world, and that it must be bent to the beliefs it preaches. Seeing as yours is a fake church that wishes to impose itself to its very own followers, that you acted in a most unjust way upon excommunicating your most loyal believer, and that you do not act according to the beliefs you say to hold, I find myself forced to reject Catharism. Orthodox Catholicism is now my faith, my true faith, for a veil that was casted on my eyes has been retired, and I can now see the lies and slander of your preaching.

His Royal Highness Jaume IV d’Urgell-Barcelona, Prince of Catalonia, Count of Barcelona, et caetera, et caetera, et caetera.

ooc: gee I almost thought you said you were Cathar for a sec :see misread your letter on your visitor page :p

Weren't you excommunicated before the court decision?

ooc: Twas retroactive RP actually. The court order explained the national conversion and the excommunication came after that. Thus RPwise the excommunication came after the court order for national conversion.

:agree: Jeho understood pretty well.

The short life of a levy
Battle of Tardes

Silently quivering, he watched across the battlefield. He knew he wasn’t a real soldier like the ones behind his formation. He had never seen a single battle in his life, had never wielded a weapon before the soldiers had come to raise the levies. He was nervous and scared. He was so very scared.
If it wasn’t for the men and boys around him he would have turned around and walked back to the village he came from. But he wouldn’t, he was resolute about that. He didn’t know why he was here but his King had called upon him and he would fight for his cause. With that thought he tried to shake of his feelings of fear, in which he hardly succeeded, and took a strong hold on his sword and shield. It was a big shield. If he crouched he was fully protected by it. That was his job when the battle started. Once advanced on the enemy, he was supposed to lock shields with his neigbours, stabbing over and under it with his sword. The men behind him were armed with spears and smaller shields. They were supposed to protect him from above and stab with their spear over him. He prayed to God they would.
He heard a bugle sound a signal and the sergeants started shouting and swearing at the levies and soldiers alike, to start marching at the enemy ranks. In relative order they crossed the battlefield, with just 20 meters to spare a second bugle sounded and the front ranks were ordered to crouch. He knew that at this point the proffesional infantryw as supposed to move from behind the formation to perform a pincher maneuver.
Slowly the levies moved the last meters towards the enemy. With just 5 meters to spare he looked up to find the shield of the man behind him above his head. Feelings secure he made himself ready to engage the enemy. His shield met resistence and he knew that the only thing between him and the enemy was his 3 centimeter thick shield. He started pushing forward all the while stabbing his sword under and over his shield in the manner tought to him during the last few months.
Suddenly he felt an exploding pain and when he looked up he couldn’t see the shield that was there before but instead he saw a grinning face. The world became a dark, bloodred while he fell forward to the ground. He felt someone stepping on his arm, breaking the bones but strangely he didn’t feel any pain. The last thing he heard were the horns in the distance that would bring the heavy cavalry down upon the rear of the enemy formation.

Eww. Retroactive RP.

I had to put orders in, I already said my RP was coming later...
I thought it was pretty obvious with the first two pieces. My excuses if you did not understand.
