December World - game thread

well uh, it's not exactly an isolated country but I guess there's like, Quebec.

Or Switzerland.

Greece?

Even less isolated considering the geopolitics

If you want pacifist-egalitarian then Armenia would work. You'd be pretty firmly in Russia's sphere of influence, but Russia is a benevolent boss and would probably help defend you against those dastardly Ottomans. Similar with Ukraine, though you'd be more likely to be pulled into politics as them

Quebec is your best bet; only neighboring the friendly Union and an egalitarian democracy. No one has any territorial designs on them so you'd be free to do your own thing.

Switzerland is an authoritarian democracy, as are the Scandinavian countries (Switzerland is republican, the Scandinavians have (presumably constitutional) monarchs). They've been mostly kept outside of geopolitical shenanigans.

Switzerland is next to me, and as you should remember Christos we have many good experiences playing together.

But yes in addition to Switzerland .... Greece is open (albeit under the boot of Italy), along with Quebec and most of the scandies iirc.

Quebec is probably your best choice. Slightly more left leaning than you usually play but otherwise it’s exactly what you asked for.

Quebec is my border buddy. They don't have any way to expand over land unless you want to go through me. If you're fine with not doing that, I'd be happy to work with you.

The national summary link in the first post of the game has been updated. I added a summary of what's happened to each nation between 1890 and 1897.

I may add flags later.

Quebec it is.

EDIT: Do I send any orders or do I wait for the next update first?

You can send in orders this turn. Do it ASAP, if you can.

On a separate note, I added flags for all nations in the National Summary document.

Henri Bourassa, President of Quebec and General-Secretary of the Parti Social-Démocrate du Québec (Social Democratic Party of Quebec) has laid out in a speech in the legislature the general program of his party.

"We believe in liberty and equality. Liberty both personal and economic. Personal liberty means respecting the rights of the individual to live their personal life in the manner they see fit without the constraints of a moralistic state. Economic liberty means providing a safety net for all our citizens so they can be free to pursue their desires in life. Equality means equality of rights and equality of opportunities. We deeply believe in personal dignity and that all persons, whatever their ethnicity, race or affluence, should have the same rights before law. We also believe that everyone, regardless of their origins, should get the same opportunities to advance in life. Our political program is based upon those values."

The President stated his Five Policies Program:

Inclusive Growth - We need to maintain economic growth in order to lift up our region from the wars of the past. At the same time though we need to ensure that this growth is inclusive and that everyone benefits from it. We shall combine a dynamic market economy with the defense of our robust welfare state. We need both economic production and rational redistribution of that production.

Environmentalism - We should live in harmony with the environment. Quebec is our motherland and we should respect her soil. We should do our best to ensure a healthy and beautiful country for the shake of future generations. As such I promise to legislate proper regulations to prevent pollution and ensure the protection of our land.

Infrastructure - The wars of the past mean that Quebec is lacking in infrastructure. Our current economic situation means that we cannot correct at once this troubling problem but with high rates of economic growth we can begin to gradually invest in our infrastructure. I promise that within the next decade we shall begin a large-scale reconstruction program.

Multiculturalism - We are a country of immigrants in a continent that was shaped by migration. Although we should be proud of our French heritage and we should promote our unique French-Canadian culture, we should also respect all cultures and ensure that people from different backgrounds can find a welcoming home in Quebec.

Decentralization - We believe in a robust welfare state, not a nanny state. The state should serve the people and not the opposite. We believe that welfare programs and regulations are best handled at local level. We also believe that local governments are more accountable to their constituents and know better local problems and advantages than bureaucrats in the capital. As such I promise a gradual decentralization of power with more authority being given to regional units. We need a government of the people by the people and for the people.

Treaty of Friendship and Mutual Assistance Between Indostan and The Third Burmese Empire

The brotherly Empires of Indostan and Burma, recognizing in each other the traits of veritable amity, and reflecting on the felicitous circumstances that both now enjoy after the endured sufferance of war that built between them a spirit of comradeship, affirm that

1. In full accordance with the spirit of the Thale Noi Treaty and in exaltation of its values of Asian fraternity and anticolonialism, the Empire of Indostan and the Third Burmese Empire pledge to assist each other if either party should be a victim to foreign aggression,

2. With the will to expand upon the principles of the Thale Noi Treaty, the Third Burmese Empire and the Empire of Indostan pledge to improve commercial relations between them and to facilitate travel and trade between them by lowering tariffs and easing border controls between them.

Signed in Calcutta on the 12th day of October in the year of 1897

Message To the North German Federation
We regret the rash actions of the previous Emperor, who violated international law by detaining the Ambassador from the North German Federation. While we believe that the detaining of Burmese citizens is beyond the scope of the North German Federation's authority, responding to such an act by violating international law was a mistake. As of this moment, the North German Federation Ambassador and their staff are to be released from prison and returned to their residences.
