Participation has fallen off because we are in a bad situation. We have fallen behind badly (in last place by all measures) and have no Iron. The sight won't let me upload the save twice so please visit our thread to check it out the 230 BC save: http://forums.civfanatics.com/showthread.php?p=9599558#post9599558

We are playing on a large terra map so there is a whole nuther continent populated only by barbarians. It is also Epic speed on Emperor level with unrestricted leaders.

So we're really stuck and I don't see the way out. Should we try for crossbows and attack Ceaser/Egypt? or would we be better off trying to capture some land on the new continent? The war with Egypt would be costly and set us even further behind in the short run but if it succeds I'm pretty sure we have a good shot at winning. The war would not be easy for us though so biding our time and heading to the new world seems attractive but by then how much further behind would we be?

Tough choices but Civ V won't be here for another week so I'll keep at it.

You know you can't build Crossbows without Iron right?
Besides, offensively Axes, Horse Archers and even Longbows are better than Crossbows.

Oh and that hilltop barb city can be taken with 4 of the Axes in or near the nearest city, Catapults would be massive overkill.
In all honesty you are in a right mess here, theres so much wrong it'll be very difficult to fix.

Okay, scratch crossbows. Thanks.

I've dusted this game off for the summer full of hope but bad luck has been hitting us in massive waves. I'm running low on hope so thought I'd come here for some change.

If any hero can get us unstuck I'm prepared to start suggest that we change our leader name to your user Id (just think how that would look on a job resume or college application). Here is the link to our turn log if you like sad stories http://forums.civfanatics.com/showthread.php?t=425076

If you don't then the cliff note version goes like this, epic Emperor level game with unrestricted leaders on a huge terra map. Barbarians were unexpectedly tough and captured one of our early cities and we've been behind ever since. I thought our only chance was to fight our way out so we invaded Egypt (to our west and ruled by Caesar) to capture iron and a religious capitol, but Germany (to our south and ruled by Genghis) keeps declaring on us and messing up our plans. Egypt now has longbows and chariots and our invasion force is suddenly a bit obsolete.

I'm not good enough to play from the 625 ad save. I went back and played from the 975 bc save. Still struggling but there may be a glimmer of hope.

Spoiler :
First thing I noticed were some nice cottages, no gpp being generated and plenty of unchopped forest. Switched the workers from current tasks and sent them chopping away to build some axes. Used the axes to capture 3 barb cities dotted around, settled the coastal horse city and then promptly ran out of room. 6 cities, behind on tech, last in everything. Build library in capital and used GS for academy. Went for aesthetics, lit and music and managed to trade a bunch of techs. Even got the free GA from music for a GA. What's really surprising is that I managed to build Glib in 730ad! Lost Taoism race but bulbed philosophy anyway.
Tech and score wise in the middle of the pack, power wise its pretty dire. There's been quite a few wars and I've politely declined invites to participate, I've also turned down requests to stop trading with worst enemies but agreed to pretty much everything else.
If I continue from this I'd build a few more cats and HAs, declare on Genghis and try to annigilate his stack in my territory before going on the offensive: blood and iron.

edit: If you were going to play from here it might be worth swopping back to Judaism next turn, I swopped to Buddhism during GA to meet a request/demand.

Wow Pigswill fantastic work! Thanks.

Thats a pretty deep hole your in.

Lot of strange, and bad decisions made, like not swapping to any civics (OR/HR), not having granaries, ignoring great people and specialists entirely, declaring war with what seems to have been a seriously tiny army, building too many cottages, to name just a few.

I played from the 625AD save to 700AD.

My own thoughts were to head for peace, bump up tech as much as possible and get stuff to leverage.
I took another city from Egypt before getting payed for peace, begged Toku for all his gold, later begged Joao for some when he had it, swapped to CoL rather than Machinery and noticed Zara will declare on Genghis...... for a price (part of the reason for CoL).

Changed loads of things across the empire, generally focusing on economy rather than military. Generally looking to trade my way back into this, most probably using first GS to fire up a golden age for a mass civic swap and to set up a mad charge down the tech tree.
Hoping to be able to get an advantage over someone come Rifling to bust out, probably taking Egypt and/or Genghis out, and if accomplished I suspect things will be looking a lot better.

Not particularly hopeful though as Zara has an absurd amount of land while you failed to get any at all.....

And I see you took a German city too, that must have been some 5 turns. Real nice work Ghpstage, thanks. It is a tera map which means there is a whole other continent with just barbarians. So maybe trying to find and settle that would be a better strategy for us than fighting more powerful neighbors.

230 save is winnable. Especially if you can trade for mathematics and go construction, you still might have enough time to get catapults before someone has longbows.

Stop building chariots, build research and run a lot of commerce. Scout for the best possible target, build a round or two of axeman while teching construction, take someone's land, hunker down to renaissance and play normally.
