For anyone who is interested. Algebriac notation is sanctioned by the Chess Federation as it is easy for beginners to pick up without actually knowing the game.

Descriptive notation is less abstract as it records the moves in the manner which your mind thinks. Is is used in most older texts and is preferred by most chess masters.

Here is an example of algebraic and descriptive notation side by side

and a Detailed explanation

Thanks for including me in the title but what do I have to do with that? It was you who found it so you deserve all the honours

Yes Luke, you must be as one with the notation. Simply notate as you think, there is no need to seperate thought from action. It will come naturally to you......

note: if you move your Knight next, you will need to prefix either the Knight with K or Q like thus KN/QN or you will need to prefix the destination with K or Q like this N-KB3.

erased the more common/less common part which was wrong

Uh, not sure there but I think you've understood what I mean? Anyway, this should look like this. Agree?

N-KB3 is preferred to KN-B3 ( note should be KN and not NK).

Otherwise everything is perfect.

To clarify (I wasn't too clear in the previous post), if it is not apparent whether the King's side or Queen's side is the destination, then you add a prefix to the destination.

When you can move more than one piece of the same type to the destination, then you add a prefix to the piece.

If you can do either to show your move, it is preferred to do the earlier. In some cases, you may need to do both or none.

Incidental note:
N-KB3 is said aloud as Knight to King Bishop Three. Some people play verbally face to face without a chessboard using this method.

Thanks for your patience.

Advance!
BTW, I saw on the rules that the white moves are in capital whereas black moves are in normal characters ie : PK8 and pk8.

PS: do you also play chinese chess?

Up to you about the upper and lower caps. I never noticed it myself - sharp eye for detail!

PS: do you also play chinese chess?

Yes, and animal chess and stratego but my absolute favourite is the chinese version of stratego.

I think there's no need to be precise, since there's no possible ambiguity concerning the "predator" knight and the "prey" pawn?
Btw, if you want to play a chinese game, I've got Battlechess2 chinese edition...

Btw, if you need a freeware chess program, just tell me. It's surely more practical than logging your game using Powerpoint...

A freeware chess program would have been handy before I created my powerpoint (specially for this game). It works like a real chessboard so I am quite happy with it. Thanks for the offer.

What I expected. A queen carnage. Now you don't have choice

I love seeing queen's blood flooding on the chessboard... Hey I'm romantic, am I?
