Design Contest Q&A thread

Unit Critiques, from the top:

princecharles's Illusionist:
Spoiler :
Why didn't you change it after I pointed out the other unit of the same name? I really like the assume identity spell, but not the decieve one. Its abilities should also include making decoys (summons that all disappear when one is attacked), and disguising your units so they appear to be weaker than they are. However, this would likely be overpowered, and might fit a Svartalfar or council of Esus UU (or hero) better

Sorry, I've been busy lately and didn't have the time to get back on and change it. Hmmm, how about Mind Alterator?(would require alteration)
There just aren't many names for illusionist besides magician. As for disguising your units to make them look weaker, thats what decieve does. However, I do like the decoy idea, as it does fit the original unit design I had in mind. As for why I thought it should be for balseraphs, its because I was thinking of the mind magic they start with, and how mind magic can symbolise madness or randomness, which in turn can be considered messing with your opponents mind as well.

It seems that everyone else has been doing this too so here are my opinions of the units that made it to the polls:

Blood Hawk
by the fish
-All birds could have those abilities, not only this one.
-Not only 'could' but they should have them.

Divided Soul
by Verdian
-Quite sidar-unique, another possible way would be to have reveal/hide spells for the sidar which they can use to change from physical to shadows and back.

Ghost Pirate
by khanjackal
-Might work as a shadow pirate but not as undead.

Mana Freak
by Arqane
-with affinities to several mana this one could be a completely insanely crazy unit. So exactly fitting for the Balseraphs.

Mime
by Black Whole
-Good as another crazy Balseraph unit.

The Restless
by it-ogo
-Good as an idea but not exactly canon and might be exploited.

Trickster
by Sureshot
-If it keeps all its skills when becoming an assassin it might be overpowered.
-But making it paraller to assassin would balance it a lot.

Wild Mage
by Randolph
-Adds a whole lot of luck in the game, so definitely a well-working Balseraph unit.

Will'o'wisp
by Cadaveres
-Another shadowy sidar, would be a good flavour unit if balanced.

And now the wonders:

my Arcane Academy
-When thinking now The Academy of the Caswallawn might work too if not too Amurite-biased
-and a magical waste leak (=nuclear meltdown for effects) might be an additional flavour
-I tried to give this as much flavour as possible while keeping it simple, all that reagent/culture stuff might be unnecessary
-How about negative culture???

City of a Thousand Slums
by Kol.7
-My second favourite, the Kuriotates won't be likely to build this but when they do they would need additional effects that don't unbalance the game too much

Conclave of Blades
by TravellingHat
-Another good idea of empowering magical units, in a bit different way
-If both the Academy and Conclave were implemented as mutually exclusive wonders it might make magic specialising to the power of two

The Holy Ale Great Brewery
by Pandemonis
-Definitely the greatest wonder of these if you ask dwarves

Mirror Mirror
by formless blob
-Again Kuriotates issues: will settlements be counted or not?
-If will, then it'll a source of infinite gold
-If not, it will be useless

Pan's Meadow
by Rex rgis of Ter
-The effect should be restricted to the building city only, to avoid über-elves with tons of food, gold and production from their forests.

Port Royal
by Frozen Vomit
-Seems good but I'm a bit doubtful about its suitability for FfH universe

Sacrifice to Bhall
by CXDamian
-A way to get peace with barbarians would be nice

And finally events:

Bring Em Back Alive
by charleswatkins
-If rare animals keep rare this would still allow the Great Menagerie, so it could be even a bit more common

Commerce Feud
by Xuenay
-Realistic and has a lot of different possibilities
-Might mess your game up but hey, that's what feuds do

Glorious Combat
by Cadaveres
-Finally some reward for winning tough battles
-Another requirement might be less than 40% odds of victory to make it really glorious; winning an elite scout with a green phalanx isn't so much

Pining for the Fjords
by icantcmyeye
-Hasn't Kael promised to include this?
-As a once-in-a-lifetime event this would be a great easter egg

Turncoats
by blueparrot1966
-Tax collector is a good small event
-Gladiator might need slavery as civ X's civic

MagisterCultuum: Frankly, I think I liked the Snake Idea better (even though I wasn't a huge fan of that. I thought it would be better as a normal, barbarian animal that could be captured, but didn't like the idea of the elves training their own). The current choice is very similar to almost half the other suggestions in the contest. Adding [NWO] Valis's suggestion was pointless, since that was already covered by making them invisible. (Invisible units don't defend and can't capture cities, they can share tiles with enemies.)

*wince* Ouch.
