DGIT # 2-Krafty Koreans

Wow! I guess we don't need to worry about attacks from the south, except maybe by a wandering tribe of Eskimos. :)

Actually, our start isn't too bad. Rivers, lake, coast, wheat, cows, and plenty of bonus grass. We should be able to churn out a number of strong cities rather quickly. And all of our exploring can pretty much be north and west. The only real downside is the terrible position of our capital. Its not going to be very centralized to limit future corruption.

I don't think I would have mined that mountain at this point. Its going to be rather limiting. Mined mountains in despotism only give us 2 shields, but a bonus grass mined will give 2 shields and 2 grass. With a road, an extra commerce as well, which we need to exploit since its one of our traits. We need growth and production. Plus mining grass is quick. Just a thought for the future. Mountains will be needed, but not so soon.

Do we have a research direction in mind yet? I'm assuming Pottery is being researched for the granaries. Philosophy is a pretty key tech in Conquests, since it give a free advancement to the first to research, which on regent we have a chance to do. I think we should focus in that direction and depend on trades with our neighbors to pick up other techs. Just a thought.

As for expansion, I say think north and west. We can save our peninsula for a bit later. The spot between the hills and next to the cow to our north looks real nice. Plus its coastal, from which we could build a currugh to explore the coasts. And we don't know what is hiding to our immediate west.

Definitely an interesting start. Nice job. The Korean lands will look mighty nice from our space ship!

Just a bit of helpful criticism; it's generally a bad idea to mine moutains this early on, due to the amount of time it takes to accomplish things. As you'll notice, the worker was still mining at the end of your turn. :) I probably would've gone for the BG SE of Seoul, due to the fact that it is much quicker-- and more profitable, being on the river.

Please don't take offense, just trying to help you out. I used to go straight for moutains and hills, too. :)

It is an OK start, 'part from capital
You stopped on 3050 BC :p

Most people consider 4000 BC to be turn 0, so turn 20 is actually 3000 BC

That coastal square between the cattle and the river seems absolutely perfect for a settler factory and first coastal city...

sorry about the mountain, its ok SmellinCoffee, no offence taken, i didn't know how long itwould take (i forgot how long) to mine the mountain.

as for stoping at 3050 BC, well i did my best, that was the first time i started an SG, maybe the next player can make up for that by taking an extra turn.

No Problem :D
Next person will just take an extra ;)

Maybe before Sandrock LQ goes, we should decide what to do with our worker. He's currently roading the mountain and won't be done for 9 turns. We can probably have a bonus grass mined and roaded in that time. Plus then we can guide our worker to road toward our next city site. Sometime in the next century or two we can send the Korean public works corp. back to finish the Seoul Scenic pass. :D

Just a thought.

Oh, and we should be able to rachet back our max sci run on writing for a while. Writing is due in 48 turns. I tried pulling the slider back and currently we can still have writing in 48 turns and pull in 4gpt. We'll just have to remember to keep checking back to F1 and playing with the slider, especially once we make contact with some others as tech costs can drop after contact.

As for the settler factory site, Blasphemous pointed out the river spot next to the cow. That looks good to me as well. Is it enough to make a settler factory out of it? No bonus grass, and only the cow. I can't recall what is really required to make a good 4 turn settler factory. Its worth a shot. I think the spot north of the cow is a bit better, but its not on the river and spreads the city a bit farther out. But with a temple, it will pull in two cows and even without there are two hills, three bgs and the cow. I guess that will be Sandrock LQ's call as our settler is due in 4.

One last thing, as our thread pans across many pages, it might be wise to include the roster order with UP and ON DECK markers to help keep track of our order. To christen page 4, I'll include it now...

Ah, so much to do, so little time. I probably won't get to this until Wednesday night because I work 12 hour shifts. I'll stop the worker, and see if we can get some irrigation going.

Don't feel to bad Solar Kinght on the turns. If you recall, I made the same mistake in our last game.

I'm going to settle north of the cow. I can irrigate up from the river if necessary, or build the temple to increase our fat "X." with the culture.

We've also got some serious exploring to do in the west.

Everyone still has time to make more comments, and I'll make an effort to have this done and posted late Wed. or early Thurs.

Unless we plan to go for Feudalism (not likely), we should try to settle rivers as much as possible so we don't waste time on aqueducts...

Ouch. 12 hour shifts can be tough. Play whenever you can.

Oh, and I think it goes without saying we are all going to make mistakes in this game. Afterall, we are all learning as we go along. Even after reading all the great material on this site, its easy to not absorb many of the ideas. The important thing is to have a great time! And to of course, send a Korean to outer space! :D

In an effort to over analyze the game, I decided to look up what was necessary to really get a settler factory going. Our only real choice for a 4 turn factory is the grass spot north of the southern cow. But it will take some work. We will need a worker, and a temple (or another city a bit to the north to expand the cultural boundaries) to pull in the second cow. Plus a granary. That's a lot to build to get the factory going. Basically 5 extra food are needed with a granary to grow twice every 4 turns. Plus 30 total shields for the settler. The river is not important as we don't want the city to grow to size 7 while churning settlers. We can get 5 extra food by irrigating one cow (+2), and pulling in the 2nd cow (+1) plus the +2 in the city itself. Even with the work to get this city going, over time this is going to be a very strong city spot with all the bonus grass.

The spot on the river won't work, because it can only get +4 food at best. BUT, given the work involved to get the aforementioned site going, it may not be a terrible choice instead, because we can build it faster. It won't be as strong a future city, but it will still get 2 hills, and one bonus grass (plus whatever is lurking underneath the trees). Plus it is on a river which helps in the money and future growth department. It may be a better compromise.

We will still have the other cow and all those bonus grass to use for another city. And as Blasphemous mentioned, we should try and take advantage of rivers as much as possible.

Really, with all the analyzing, our best bet may be our capital. Irrigate the wheat, mine a few bonus grass and we are in business. It won't be a 4 turn factory, but it won't be bad. Use the second city to build escorts.

So with all this rambling, I think our best plan would be to 1) set up the capital for settlers, 2) settle either the river spot or the spot north of the cow (powerhouse!) for the next city. A third city could sit on the river to our NW (in the bonus grass, with the hills in the expanded radius). After that, let's see what our brave explorers find! ;)

I think we should get a unit (warrior, that is) onto the mountain right outside our territory... It looks like there might be an awesome place for a city there (gold + wheat + river + forest!!!!!!).
And I looked at the screenie again and saw that the river spot isn't nearly as good as the powerspot two squares north. That square's truly good enough to warrant turning Seoul into the Settler Factory rather than the new city. We should place a city there, and build temple first, to get the extra cow and all those extra BGs (and a forest) asap...

Hey guys, I'm back in town so can keep up with everything.;)

We need cities, and for space race we need as many as we can get early on to get science up and going. It would be very nice to have a 4-turn settler factory, but I'd be happy with a 6 turn production rate with that 4+ food city. Also seems like the second city would start producing quicker as well. Figure it'll take another 10-20 turns to get it up to par with the second city, and we'll loose the advantage of building it. Once we reach 20 or so cities, we'll pretty much be set. I'd go for the second choice, especially since we're only playing on regent and the AI doesn't get all those production bonuses at higher levels.

I have a feeling we're none to close to our nearest neighbor, so we'll need to do our own research. And it may bea good idea to turn research up so we're breaking even or getting only 1gpt. We can turn it down, but 4gpt isn't going to help as much as getting pottery so we can start making some settlers. No comment on worker actions because that's my weak point.:p

I think we got a great starting position though, but we're going to have to move the capitol. I can't think anymore, and I've been traveling all day so I'm gonna head to bed.

OK, a slight delay, my apologies. I am going to play right now. That is all. Post to follow after 21 turns.

Wow. Is that two cows and the wheat in a potential cities border!? Can I say again, wow? We are going to have to race the Americans to that spot, although, it looks like we have that covered. Good move, Sandrock LQ. :D

I think Seoul is a bit over irrigated. Irrigated grass don't do anything for us until we are out of Despotism. We just needed the one to Seoul's east to bring irrigation to the wheat. We need mines to ramp up Seoul's production. Same for Pyongyang. Let's do some mining before we irrigate anything, as its wasting worker cycles at this stage.

Maybe we should have Pyongyang pump out a Currugh to explore a bit before we start that temple. It won't need to expand for a little bit, and once we have a bit more production, we can pull in the second cow with a temple.

America as a neighbor. Expansionist. We'll have to keep contacting them to check out what techs they have learned from huts. Maybe they'll get to meet some barbs as well. I'm assuming they only have the two cities so far?

Anyhow, I can play this tonight, so bring on the ideas today. If we want to hold 24 hours for comments, that's fine, but you'll have to wait until tomorrow night then for my turns.

We should try to place the new city so that it leaves space for another city that can grab the gold and wheat just NW of Seoul's borders. I've got nothing to say beyond that. =)
