My girlfriend and I were trying to do a direct IP connect game the other night. No matter how we tried, we kept getting "timed out" messages. We traded, one hosting the other trying to join, and vice versa.

Our firewalls have both been told that Civ IV is OK

We both have the correct IP address for eachother's computer.
Neither of us are setting a password.

Why can't we connect?

Do you use a router?

If so you need to access the port forwarding settings and forward Port 2056 UDP

Also, make sure you use the IP that comes up on the top of the page www.whatsmyip.org

After browsing all day for help with this issue, the only thing that I can come up with is... I hope that you don't have to go through all of this on Civ IV!

Ifyouhavetoask, would you happen to know if it is necessary for both users to enable portforwarding on their routers? I am able to do it, but my brother doesn't have the slightest clue on how to access his router... and I have been unable to help him.

I'm like Pinstar... I just want to connect with one person.

Thanks for the help!

===direct play LAN===
on a lan-network everything should work fine, use the IP of your networkcard if asked for.

===direct play Internet===

No, only the one who's hosting needs to forward ports on his router. More information about forwarding can be found The ports are (afaik):

UDP 2300 to 2400
TCP 47624
not sure: TCP 2033, TCP 2056

Then the host tells his WAN-ip to the others, for example to be found at www.whatismyip.com. The client of course connects to this address.

As mentioned above, your Windows/BlackIce/Zonealarm firewall should not interfere in any way (if nothing works, the host can try to turn it off completely).

More information about forwarding:

As a last check, i have send an email to Take2. This is the reply:

Dear Sir/Madam

Thank you for contacting Take 2 Technical Support.

In order to connect through a router you would need to open port 2056.

Please be sure to delete all previous correspondence when replying. This
will help us to process your response in a more timely and efficient manner.

I had this issue trying to direct connect with a friend until I disabled my firewall. He was able to connect np after that, so I disable it each time we play and enable it afterwards. I am not too computer savy, so I have no clue what dangers I am subjecting myself to when I disable the firewall for our gaming sessions. :p

Hi !

I am facing the same problem but with a different situation.

If I wanna connet in LAN everything is ok. If I connect via Direct-IP to one other player everything is ok. But:
If I have 2 players within my lan (using direct ip) AND one other from outside
the first two are connected fine but the third will connect to the host, but not to the other player.
I did the prot forwarding to my server but I think maybe that is now the problem???!!!

Did anyone have this problem as well or anybody who can play like with this scenario?

Thanks a lot for help.
Marco

Hi All,
I'm a little confused with this port forwarding. Is port forwarding necessary even if I am trying only to establish a Lan connection - but not through the internet?
Thanks for the assistance
