DMI VIII - The War of Wrath

I tried to change and fix some things, but every time I put my hands on the WBS file it broke the game. So we have to live with what we got, though it's not ideal...

The Noldor lived in peace for a long time, becauser the leaguer they had put around Angband stayed all evil creatures. Yet Morgoth's servants seaerched ever for ways to escape the vigilance of the sons of Fëanor and of the valiant Edain, so that there were times the Noldor had to put forth their skill in warfare. When news reached the ears of Curufin that an Orc host had raided the coastlands and tried to come fromn behind the hills he marshalled his troops at once. Maedhros, his brother, rode with him and they both put an end to Morgoth's servants...

The Bay of Balar was thus clean again, and the Elves decided to abide there, as it lay to the sea, and the power of Ulmo ran still in the river.

Morgoth however was wroth at the loss of his troops, and he sent forth his soldiers into Beleriand. They harassed Haldad and his folk cruelly. Haldad, being in dire need, fled westwards and met Beor and the Noldor. They were still under the protection of Ulmo, and Manwë had seen all from his high seat on Taniquetil. Ulmo put forth his powers, and fog arose from the rivers, blinding the enemy. Thus Haldad and his people could escape, and the onslaught was stayed.

Meanwhile the Eldar at Nevrast prospered and grew strong, and they sent forth a host to discover new lands...

The city of Nargothrond was founded at the hills, not far from the River Narog. The Dwarves of Belegost said that in these hills there lies wealth unmeasured, and the Noldor, being skilled in craft, wanted to mine those hills for their profit.

Thus the Eldar looked into the future joyously, yet the Wise among them never forgot the threat of Morgoth. When will he attack ?

Imhotep

P.S.: I had to vassal Haldad to Manwë to stay the hordes of Morgoth. They were carving Haldad into mincemeat, which fits well with the tale. Morgoth is becoming very powerful indeed. I've set Mithrim on GP duty, but I think 10 will suffice as threshold - Beor is producing some too, which lifts our margins...

P.P.S.:

ARATHORN IS UP

I'm checking the save. I'm glad that you have edited the name of the save - do this as well, fellow SG'ers, ok? Those fonts just do not read in my save and I need to edit the name myself :p

See it. Will try to play tonight.

What's the general plan? Continue to expand a bit. Specialist economy without the lightbulbing benefits. Enough military to keep away the barbs and hopefully keep Morgoth from being too adventurous. We need the light of the trees to lead us. These sun/moon years are too short.

Arathorn

The general plan is get 10 GPs :D . The other general plan is: Survive ! ;) Right now I'm not sure Morgoth won't declare - both of 'em are really powerful...

I have an idea - let's focus on some military and use our Great People to bulb techs like Paper and Education (after CS). We have Iron and Horses (at last nearby), so it may be wise to build a good Maceman/Knight pinch force. But... just as I'm writing this, I remember it's Deity. That means we are tramped in production by AIs, and Morgoth already becomes a powerhouse. Not good. :( Guilds still are on the path when we hit Machinery. We can still wait until Cuirassiers or Cavalry.

Hey, Conquest is the whole point of the game... :crazyeye:

I'm still worried because we didn't have an occasion to use our mighty Praetorians on the battlefield... But hey, Manwe is keeping us under his control... And Morgoth is afraid of his military might. What it will be like if Manwe and Morgoth just won't declare war?

My suggestion - really go for those military techs. Morgoth is Montezuma with -100 relations with us predefined. He will come after us. All our base will belong to him. We won't have time to survive make your time!

The Noldor were shocked at the outpouring of power from Melkor. Haldad's near-destruction had awakened in them the knowledge of fear and the need for better weapons and better means of producing them.

With those two needs in mind, many builds were changed to forges. Eol had taught them the power of smelting metal more quickly to quickly produce goods for war, as well as buildings and anything else their minds could imagine. The industrious Noldor took to these ideas immediately and switched over to building forges. While many people died in their haste to erect these means of production, the corresponding gain in producitivity was deemed worthwhile.

Secondly, the Noldor agreed with Beor's descendents (men live such short lives -- shocking!) of the need for Feudalism. Not only would this knowledge aid in the learning of Civil Service, it would provide better bows for the mighty Noldor archers. The might of Melkor pales next to that of Manwe, naturally, but both are immense compared to that of the Noldor, Feanor's sons were finally realizing. And, with the oath still fresh in their minds, it was not obvious whether Manwe would or could come to their aid. Caution is required.

Manwe put his power on display for all to fear.

The Noldor also came to the realization that being able to respond quickly to incoming threats was necessary. Their road infrastructure was sadly lacking. Being able to reinforce each other, despite their differences in opinion, would be valuable, should the forces of Melkor be unleashed in a sudden onslaught. Many years of worker actions were required to fix this oversight.

Work crews were also dispatched toward the shiny gems recently discovered near Noldor lands. While the elves could not match the beauty of the Nauglamir, let alone the lost Silmarils, they still appreciated beauty well formed. Many were still grumbling about leaving the Blessed Shores and needed placating. The forges ability to better mold gold had helped, but gems were also necessary. The necessary arrangements are nearly complete.

The Noldor were also murmuring about the incursion of men into Beleriand. While Beor's descendents are all fine individuals, they seem to be dominating land, even where the Noldor culture should be stronger. [I tried to get a screenshot of it, but it's not clear at all. But it seems like there are tiles where we have much more culture than Beor and Beor is being allowed to work the tile. Some weird vassalization bug? I dunno, but it's somewhat annoying.] Some call for the ousting of all men, but their voices were quickly drowned by reason.

The help of Manwe will require many great Noldor to sacrifice themselves. While all Noldor consider themselves great, some stand above the rest. The first of these was born in Mithrim -- a great scientist. He is still in Mithrim, awaiting his chance to return to Manwe and plead for the case of the Noldor. I recommend he fortify until such time as we can safely send him west.

Ulfang tried to trick us into providing him with valuable metals. He is enough of a threat. I saw no need to give him even better weapons.
Spoiler :

When Elwe comes asking for help, however, we take pity and give him what he wants.

Spoiler :

Manwe, too, saw our need, and began providing resources, unasked-for. We appreciate the gestures. Rice and clams provide health, which is not needed as much as happiness, but we appreciate any and all gestures.

Spoiler :

A few out-of-character notes:
- Mithrim should hire two scientists again after the settler completes. But I could save a turn on the settler working more tiles and, since we're not growing, I felt it worthwhile. A couple potential city sites are marked on the map.
- Parthian looks like a reasonable site and a good place to train a few praetorians. I think we should take it. Once we have 3 praets in the area, I'd march on it. I prefer overkill, though, rather than not having enough units.
- Not sure of tech after Civil Service. But going Feudalism first gets us to CS just as fast, honestly. We're just as close as if we'd've been researching CS the whole time. I would definitely revolt once CS finishes, though. Maybe find another great person farm.
- Do we want to do the HR whip into oblivion trick? I still don't quite fully understand it, but high-food cities can produce a lot of troops reasonably quickly that way.

@Arathorn:

Love your report. That's what I was looking for ! Thanks for joining (again) :) !

I agree that we should adopt Bureaucracy as Mithrim is a very powerful capital. And we need to decide about the National Epic site ASAP, as getting those GP is crucial. Other than that, we'll just have to see how this pans out.

Cheers

Well I had to stop after 7 quiet turns as things began to go Pear Shaped and I suspect may require a Master Builder Intervention...

Proceeded quietly by

Finish Civil Service and revolt.
Send Settler to Maoi site.
Hire scientists while attacking the Barb city with Praetorians
Designate The two seafood city for Nat Epic and start

When firstly suddenly Morgoth stops being Confucian and adopts Manwe's religion of Buddhism

and then everybody declares war leading to this...

Thoughts please Imhotep??

This is as it should be. Morgoth/Ulfang have declared on Manwë or one of his vassals, leading to the fact that all are now at war with Morgoth/Ulfang as everybody except those two is vassal of Manwë...wars in Beleriand again, but hopefully not the Dagor Bragollach...

Wow. Have you seen where Morgoth's SoD is? And how far away is Manwe?

I would like to add some sceenies to my enxt report, but I need some help with that. I have Vista and the key on the keyboard with printsceen is in the same key as the Sysrq button, if that matters. When I press it, all that happens is that the game freezes for a couple seconds but then moves on.

@reverend:

Manwë and the Valar can't help us - so the scenario was designed. We first have to accomplish the voyage of Ëarendil. Hopefully we can survive the onslaught...

On the matter of taking screenies: You should check after hitting Print Screen if the game actually saves the images. If so you should find 'em in C:\Users\Username\Documents\My Games\Beyond the Sword\ScreenShots.

Yee-haw! Some excitement.

While it pains my noble spirit, let the humans who have swarmed our land bear the brunt of this assault. We can (and must) lend aid where it will be most benefecial, but we must, ultimately, protect our own lands first.

Haldad should be supplied with metal. That's critical. We must have an effective force in the field, to meet Morgoth away from our cities, whenever possible. Near human cities is unfortunate but it may be necessary.

-----------

Go for kill ratio.
Recapture cities if it's easier than fighting in the field. But return them to their rightful owners.
Don't let a SOD near us!
And, remember, Manwe mankes this peace, not us. So we could be in for a VERY LONG war. Try to keep war weariness down.

This game just got hyper-interesting,
Arathorn

OK will continue tonight.

Just wasn't sure that Imhotep had intended for Armaggedon to break out so quickly.

How did Morgoth get Buddhism??

Ralph

Maybe he sent a Missionary by a Submarine through the peaks (if that is even possible)

The Noldor needed to assemble a host of wisdom to undertake the voyage of Earendil and new they where a long way from that path as they currently stood.

Nevertheless they would strive to increase wisdom and understanding on the path to receiving the favour of the Valar

National Epic started in Ethel Sirion as this is our best GP Farm

Nevertheless there vigilance would not be found wanting and they recognised strong minds must be backed by strength of arms.

Heroic Epic started in Nevrast.

The scourge of the barbarian was lessening and for once it seemed a time of peace might be at hand.

(Captured barb city in NW for no losses)

And then the horns of war sounded over the ramparts again. Morgoth and Ulfang had shown their hands and the Noldor knew they would stand toe to toe with their Human neighbours and other allies to withstand this onslaught.

It was not the end, nor even the beginning of the end but it was the end of the beginning (apologies to WC).

The early signs were good as the humans though frail had large numbers of troops in the field and no sign of Morgoth hosts yet.

Interestingly Beor seems to be pressing Morgoth hard with this stack invading

and this one following soon after.

It may well be that Morgoth has been caught napping rather than going on the offensive as no sign of any sort of SOD yet and Beor is doing well.

I decided to complete Philosophy and the National Epic as they were close when war broke out. I didn’t revolt to Pacifism though !!!!!

In view of the lack of a current threat I have maintained our specialist as we need to start assembling GP’s at some point. Post Philosophy we have started on Engineering as our best Military option but no beakers yet so we can decide.

And a wee off topic (ish) question.

How WorldBuilder friendly is Fall From Heaven as although I have only be following the current SG succession game with Oz et al it looks perfect for a themed LoTR game (you can even play the bad guys  )
