In the absence of orders from Kentharu, they've now recieved some suggestions from the Ulakam envoy, and armed resistance will continue.

Foul mutters were made in the Agrisian camp, here they were, without any support whatsoever, sent on one of the most blunderous moves that could attribute to the Agre nobles. One soldier stared out into the sun, pondering just what their purpose was. Once he had celebrated like any citizen of the Agrinese Empire, reveling in its triumph and glory. They were the greatest empire in the world, stronger then any foe, and led by their godlike emperor, Bazilevs Aleksandyr I. Yes, those were the days. Until the nightmare came.

Like a plague they descended upon the land, scouring all life in their wake. Nothing seemed to stop them, not even their godlike emperor had managed to stop them, despite his gains. Actually it could be attributed that life was ever much harder now. Success… bah it seemed like failure in his eyes and all the eyes of the Western Agrinese Empire. What was their mission? To try and contain the entire Ulak Horde with only a few divisions to their name while the majority of the Arge army pursued easier victories in the south? Had they not seen the devastation wrought by the Ulaks? Had they no comprehension of the massive scope brought on by their Horde? How could they possibly think such meager forces could have a hope to contain them? Such judgment by their oh so wise leaders did not save the citizens of Konya.

He had been there, along with all the other men, sent to break the siege. But when they reached it, they saw how futile such a prospect was. The fires light the entire city a blaze, the ominous smoke gathering in a large plum of ash and death. The screams of the people, echoed throughout the land, along with the chilling battle cries of the Ulak warriors as they raped, pillaged, and slaughtered throughout the entire area. This horrific sight sickened and terrified the men, as they looked on, oddly fixated and unable to turn away from the bloodbath, taking on its own horrid fascination. The now dead Bazilevs Aleksandyr I ‘great’ victories had not saved them, would never save them again.

And suddenly they were awakened by the sharp yelp of one of their comrades as a Samark spear impaled him through the chest and off his horse. His horse reeled in fright and made to break off, gaining the attention of the Arge warriors for a second before a combined Ulak and Samark patrol charged down upon them from the adjourning hill. The harsh screams of the fanatical and brutal horsemen had sent panic among the unit, causing them to break away as fast as possible. They were no match for a force that size, they never were. As the howls of the barbarians closed in around them, they hurried their horses leaving the stragglers to be cut down. Arrows flew, bodies fell, and blood poured as those who survived managed to slip away for a time… for a time anyway.

The Ulak hunting parties had dogged them for about a week, they had practically no rest until now. After nearly collapsing from exhaustion they had decided that they could run no more, that eventually they would be found and then destroyed. A desert oasis, their only relief, was chosen to make there last stand. ‘For the glory of the Arginese Empire,’ the soldier smiled sardonically at the thought of the old mantra. There would be no glory for them, or any one else within these forsaken lands. The only thing to be had now was the assurance of death.

At least the sun was shining, its resonance a comfort upon his weary spirit. Basking in it was always a pleasure; always… wait what was that dark speck right in the cen…

He never finished his thought, one minute trying to decipher the black spot in the sun, the next seeing nothing but black, clutching his right eye as he toppled to the ground screaming out in agonized pain. Blood gushed out from his eye socket as he desperately clung onto it, the arrow sticking out between his fingers. The pain poured through every vein in his body, expelling itself from his lungs as his piercing screams were soon joined by others.

Still screaming, but able to finally open his remaining eye he quickly wished for another arrow to blind him. Wholesale destruction had come as arrows rained down from the sky upon the encampment. Already enemy horsemen had broken through and begun to rampage across the entire camp. The men fought as best as they could but they were to disorganized by the surprise attack and too weary from their travels. The Ulaks had played this assault perfectly. His eye darted across the field, resting for a second on one soldier trying to run before being cut off and shot down by an arrow to heart. He switched views to another scene, this time of a soldier trying to fight back, but being surrounded by the three enemies as the battered away at them. His hopeless attempts to keep them at bay admirable, blocking and striking back with his blade while trying to push back with his shield, making his enemies cautious as the approached to strike.

He was tired though, and disoriented by their careful slashes and stabs he parried. They circled around him; causing him to lose focus as he constantly whirled to keep them in his sights keep them in his guard. Then they struck, one slash he blocked with his sword on the right, another with his shield to the left. But he couldn’t get the first one, which slashed across his back shoulder and left a horrific gash. He yelled out in pain, causing him to stagger before the one on his right swept his sword to the Arge soldiers back leg, bringing him to his knees. They reversed their handle on their swords and lunged down stabbing the screaming man, blood splattering all over them and the ground. He turned his head away. Seeing another of his comrades running up to a horseman with a spear. His shield unfortunately parried it and with great force the Ulak slashed his blade across the soldiers throat. He let out a gargled scream as he crumbled and the Ulak dashed off.

Breathing heavily the soldier crawled away to from the now burning encampment, each movement an agony, his eye still a bleeding mess and purgatory of pain, but with great effort, and with no small amount of luck as arrows continued to fall around him, he managed to grab onto the bark of a nearby tree. He slumped his back across it, bringing himself upright and giving him a better view of the situation. However, already he vision was blurring, his head sliding forward though he snapped it back up. He was losing too much blood, if something wasn’t done soo…

One of the tents burst apart and out came an Ulak and Samark horsemen, though the Ulaks armor was seemed strangely distinguishable to be from an average horsemen. They charged three Arge archers who let loose their volley. They brought down the Samark rider, and the Ulaks horse. One of the archers was struck by a random arrow to the back of his head however, the other two tried to get a better shot to finish the Ulak behind his bleeding horse. The fired, yet he rolled out of the way just in time, getting up while they reloaded. He charged on foot, letting out a shattering war cry, they fired again, while he crouched behind a shield, blocking one while the other barely missed. He burst forward, knocking down one archer with his shield, then clashing sword with the other as he desperately abandoned his bow and drew his blade. It was pointless though, the archer hadn’t practiced with swords like this man, who twirled the two rods of steel in a circle and sent the archers sword flying. The started Arge didn’t even realize the Ulak had driven his blade into his opponents gut, blood was already seeping through as the archer looked up in astonishment, his mouth in a narrow O, gasping for breath. He died silently.

All around him he saw the Arge soldiers being routed. Oh a few Ulaks fell, but not nearly enough to stop their assault. The last remaining Arge soldier who tried to fight was decapitated, and when he fell the entire Horde yelled out in a bloodcurdling battle cry. Then they started to yell “Hail Khan! Hail Khan! Hail Khan!” The unique Ulak walking among them, as they all followed him with their unshaken gaze. He himself could not see the Ulak for he wore face armor. Though his own fears were suddenly realized when he finally comprehended who this was. Then his blood froze, his gaze was getting blurry, the man, the Khan himself, was walking toward him. He lost consciousness.

His eye flickered, the picture, starting to come into view. Then he noticed only one eye was open, the other was not responding. At that moment it all came flooding back to him. He brought his hand to his eye. It had been bandaged over. He sprang himself upright, looking around to his surroundings. What he was seeing was the inside of a large and extravagantly decorated tent. Then he saw a pitcher of water on top of an end table next to him along with a huge basket of bread. Realizing just how thirsty he was he immediately began guzzling down the whole pitcher, before stuffing his face full of bread. As he frantically kept eating, the flap to the tent opened. He looked up; a loaf of bread caught in his mouth fell to the floor as he looked on in stunned surprise.

Before him stood the man who had been depicted as a demon, a psychotic bloodthirsty barbarian. He could certainly see why, his eyes were cold and calculating, utterly devoid of anything that seemed to resemble emotion. The sharp slits in his eyes only enforced the intimidating air surrounding him. He was broad, lean, and tall, with long gray hair now pulled back into a pony tail, his face also having the same gray hair in his beard. He calmly approached him.

“Well, it seems that you have awakened,” he stated lightly. Even though his voice was calm the Arge soldier started to get nervous. As if noticing this he held up his hand. “Do not worry, if I wanted to kill or torture you I would have already done it.” This was true, as the Arge soldier had time to think it through. He felt a little easier but he kept his guard up. The Khan merely smirked.

“I saw it in your eyes, well one of your eyes anyway,” he chuckled humorously How could he be so good-natured about someone’s eye being torn out? “You’ve seen it haven’t you?” The confusion must have been written on his face for Khan continued. “That look that only when one is about to face death is able to realize the truth. The look when one faces the might of the Horde.” His face broke into a sly smile. “You’ve given up haven’t you?” That was closer to the truth then the man would have liked, but Khan kept probing. “You realize that nothing has will be able to stop us. We are a force of nature, for no matter what you’ve done, you haven’t stopped us. You’ve simply realized that you never will.” Now his smile was that of sadistic pleasure. The Khan had seen the man had been broken.

The he changed his tone from knowing pleasure to lighthearted praise. “And that is why I have chose you young man. You, unlike all those fools who have underestimated us before, have seen what everyone else has not. Ironic that you’d lose an eye to get it wouldn’t you say,” he chuckled again before he continued. “None the less, you have provided me with an opportunity that I shall not pass up.”

For the first time he found the nerve to speak. “Oh? And what might that be?”

“You will be my herald my good boy. You will carry my message throughout the entire Arginese Empire,” he stated it as if it were already fact.

“And why should I,” he asked more out of curiosity the defiance.

Khan simply stared at him calmly then said, “Because you accept the truth, you don’t want them to keep fighting against the inevitable. You wish for them to embrace it, to end the pointless suffering. Suffering brought on by your inept Emperor, Bazilevs Karlyk II and his ignorance. You wish to free them of his madness, and bring about peace.”

Then frightfully for the Arge soldier, the Khans smile turned into a vicious snarl as he spat out “They have had it much sooner if not for that impotent little brat snubbing my attempts to safeguard the future. I offered that week, pathetic psycho the benefit of my mercy, for him to acknowledge Ulakam as an equal to the greatest power on earth. And yet the arrogant fool had the audacity to spit in my face!! That man is dead, Arge is dead, and whole fields of graveyards will be sown in this land because of hubris. This land is damned, its people are damned, and its emperor is damned to suffer an eternity within the pits of hell!!! At that’s exactly what I shall unleash upon it! I will climb atop mountains of bodies, burn every field and sow it in salt, grind every city into dust, and bathe in the pool of their blood. Fires so huge shall consume every parcel of the old legacy, and from its ashes a new order will arise. And if I have to cut down every Arge who chooses to defy me then so be it!! Karlyk has sealed his fate, and as I give him the honor of watching his entire empire crumble before him! His spear won’t save him, I’ll personally smelt that little stick and pour the smoldering liquid metal down his throat!!”

His snarl turned into a sadistic smile. “And that’s all just the first act my friend! What comes next will be far, far worse. They don’t believe me, they think they’ll win, but they have no idea what’s about to begin here. But you’ll tell them won’t you?” He said it lightly and suggestively enough, yet the underlying tone within his voice shriveled the poor Arge soldier’s insides. He couldn’t say no, he had no intention of lying either. Khan was right… everything he said was right. There was no hope; only mercy would save them now.

“I shall… do as you say, for my people, not for you, and not for my treasonous emperor. You have my word.” He bowed his head a little, keen on avoiding those piecing eyes that looked down on him.

The Khan just kept smiling, nodding his head. He’d won. This battle, the next, and the next until this war was over and Karlyk’s head was stuck on a pike in the middle of his burning capital.

The next day, the Arge soldier who had never given his name, sported a new eye patch, fresh clothes, supplies and horse. He had a few coins for expenses as well, personally for the Khan himself, along with a little gift in his carry on. He did not see the Khan as he made his way through the desert. Yet he could not shake the feeling that the Khans gaze remained on him even after leaving sight of the encampment. He felt he might never rid himself of that man… perhaps manner of being, until his task was complete.

3 months later

“Hey did you hear about the conspiracy by the emperors brother?” asked one guard at the palace gate.

“Yeah, who would have thought? And the emperor… that bon fire he made out of his brother and the conspirators was just… disturbing. And that look, I couldn’t believe how crazy…” the first guard cut him off.

“Hey watch what you say, you never know who could be hearing, anyway we should really…”

They didn’t get a chance to cut their conversation because the next thing they saw was a horse calmly walking up to him.

“Woah there, easy buddy” said the second guard as he grabbed the reigns. Then he noticed the bag next to it. He checked inside, never knew what could happen so why take the chance.

His eyes grew wide, his throat backed up, and he brought his hands to his mouth as he went to the side to puke. His partner was shocked; he went over to the bag and said, “Wait, what the hell… HOLY MOTHER OF PHOS!!!”

The bag contained… “Oh my… it’s the governor of Konya’s head!!” gaped the stunned guard. He looked inside again, still shaken. There was a message. It read, “This is just the beginning, accept your fate, and kneel before the Horde. We are coming.”

“Get this to the emperor immediately!!!!” shouted the guard as others came to investigate. Out of site in a nearby window, a man with a missing eye stared down onto the scene. He whirled his cloak as he turned away. There was still much work to be done.

O.C: How’s that for a story das!!! I’m not through yet, not by a long shot!! Hope you like it. :D

"Debunking Foul Ulak-spread Rumours", by Dasyr-Baghatur (historical note: a prominent member of the oft-mentioned society of the Literate Baghaturs, the first known literary circle of ancient Agre):

Low are the depths to which our enemies in this present war could fall! For, aware that they could never win on the battlefield, they decide to try and scare the people of the great cities of our empire with pathetic poison of rumours and anonymous brochures that supposedly speak of real events of this year's campaigns.

Now, it is ofcourse obvious that their pathetic ploy will fail; the loyal subjects of the Agrinese Empire will never be shaken in their determination for victory - even those of them that might believe at first that there be truth in what they heard or read (for alas, the masses are easily misled by rumour). Still, I believe that the enemy must not be allowed to bring any doubt into our hearts at all; that his lies are shown for what it is. Therefore, I have decided to write down one of the stories they had spread ('tis a distasteful task, but a necessary one, and with a certain nobility of its own - not unlike the work of a physician, who too has to work with distasteful substances to better establish the nature of the disease - and then help liquidate it, like I hope to assist the authorities with the liquidation of the Ulak propaganda). Here are the fragments - with comments clearly outlining their falsehood and Ulak origin (for only Ulaks could be as ignorant about simple and basic facts of Agrinese life).

Foul mutters were made in the Agrisian camp, here they were, without any support whatsoever, sent on one of the most blunderous moves that could attribute to the Agre nobles.

Already at this point we could see that it was written by a barbarian - just observe the terrible grammar ("Agrisian", "could attribute to the Agre nobles (sic!)"). Also, our savage has been labouring under the misconception that we have copied their barbaric, disorganized ways in military planning - perhaps they have their various warlords decide what to do, but in the Agrinese military, all the key decisions are made by the Bazilevs and his generals, NOT by the nobility of Agre or of any other city. Furthermore, no Agrinese forces had ever been commited without support; and the Bazilevs has never made any blunders, in military planning or elsewhere.

One soldier stared out into the sun, pondering just what their purpose was.

The purpose has always been clear to everyone, thanks to the Bazilevs and his messangers who spread the word of his wise decrees (including the ones in regard to the war's purpose) to the illiterate commoners.

They were the greatest empire in the world, stronger then any foe, and led by their godlike emperor, Bazilevs Aleksandyr I.

Although the Bazilevs is a chosen of the Eternal Blue Sky, he is not "godlike", for no man, not even the Bazilevs, can equal Tengri (as has already been made clear by the decree of Bazilevs Aahn I).

Until the nightmare came.

As always, the Ulaks think only of horses, and mythical ones at that.

Like a plague they descended upon the land, scouring all life in their wake.

The Ulak raids have mostly been sporadic, and damage easily-repaired; "scouring all life" is too dimwitted even for the Ulaks - much as they would like to scour all life, their precious horses also have to eat.

Nothing seemed to stop them, not even their godlike emperor had managed to stop them, despite his gains.

"Godlike emperor" again. Incidentally, there is no "emperor" in the Agrinese Empire, only the Bazilevs. And incidentally, the Ulaks have already been stopped, and furthermore driven back. Several of their raid-hordes have been eliminated altogether, and they had only managed to plunder some of the impoverished, insignificant northern provinces.

Actually it could be attributed that life was ever much harder now.

The grammar is barbaric as always... And life has only gotten better now.

Success… bah it seemed like failure in his eyes and all the eyes of the Western Agrinese Empire.

There is no such thing as a "Western Agrinese Empire" - the Agrinese Empire is single and perpetually united. As for success seeming to be failure, it would seem that Ulak "success" has been a failure indeed, their forces trapped and prevented from doing anywhere near the amount of damage they would like to.

What was their mission?

One indeed has to ponder that, for there are no Agrinese forces in the region described (except for the city garrisons, ofcourse)...

To try and contain the entire Ulak Horde with only a few divisions to their name while the majority of the Arge army pursued easier victories in the south?

If the entire Ulak Horde is trapped in the north, then the Ulaks are even closer to defeat (and even dumber) than is immediately apparent.

Also, only one Agrinese army is actually fighting in the south (as is common knowledge). And the Altynai are a more formidable opponent than the Ulaks, being a civilized people.

Had they no comprehension of the massive scope brought on by their Horde?

Indeed we have no comprehension of the "massive scope".

How could they possibly think such meager forces could have a hope to contain them?

As the Ulaks are ridicilously easy to contain and trap within a given region, no large forces are required for the task.

Such judgment by their oh so wise leaders did not save the citizens of Konya.

Yes they did - a large portion of Konya's population has been evacuated in perfect order.

He had been there, along with all the other men, sent to break the siege.

Again, none of the Bazilevs' decrees have ordered any forces to be sent to retake Konya (and incidentally, as it is already captured, there doesn't seem to be a need for a siege - until we remember how prone the Ulaks are to interfighting).

The now dead Bazilevs Aleksandyr I ‘great’ victories had not saved them, would never save them again.

Aleksandyr's great victories had already neutralized Ulak threat to most of the empire, and reduced their northern force to impotence (and as already mentioned the "relief of Konya" is entirely fictional).

They were no match for a force that size, they never were.

Yet another proof of the fictionality of that battle - offensive operations against superior numbers are prohibited by the official doctrinal decree of Bazilevs Karlyk II.

‘For the glory of the Arginese Empire,’

There never was such a mantra - barbarians fight for glory, the Agrinese - NOT Arginese - fight for victory.

There would be no glory for them, or any one else within these forsaken lands.

Glory is always achieved in battle, especially unequal battle.

His hopeless attempts to keep them at bay admirable

Hopeless struggle - such as that of the Baryklyds and the Ulaks in the present war - is NEVER admirable. Stupidity and senseless pride never are.

Samark horsemen

Peace with Samark has been signed several months ago, so it is unclear what would the Samarkese be doing with the Ulaks AFTER the peace has been signed.

The started Arge didn’t even realize the Ulak had driven his blade into his opponents gut, blood was already seeping through as the archer looked up in astonishment, his mouth in a narrow O, gasping for breath.

The grammar gets more atrocious with every new paragraph. The word the enemy panic-spreader was looking for is "Agrinese", by the way.

Before him stood the man who had been depicted as a demon, a psychotic bloodthirsty barbarian.

By the panic-spreaders, yes. The Khan is not worthy of a decree ordering his depiction in any manner at all - he is merely a pathetic, ******** barbarian, as the dumbest village idiot knows. Besides, the Ulak rulers change too often to keep track even of their names.

The rest of the Khan's speach is predictable, and the falsehoods there are obvious, nevertheless the Ulak, it must be admitted, probably knows his ruler better - the delusions apparent in the Khan's speech seem characteristic enough, so I shall them pass uncommented.

The guards of the Karlykian Palace at Agre are known for their loyalty to Karlyk II, having participated in the crackdown on the supporters of Prince Tarkantyr in the capital city - therefore their discussion is absurd on many counts.

the next thing they saw was a horse calmly walking up to him.

As palace guards are not allowed to stray away from the Palace except by Karlyk II's own decree, and as no mounts are allowed within an acre of the Palace, this is also absurd.

“Wait, what the hell… HOLY MOTHER OF PHOS!!!”

Both expressions are entirely fictional, ofcourse, as the cult of Hell and the cult of Light, though existance in Mycenae, are fringe even there and certainly do not exist in Agre itself.

“Oh my… it’s the governor of Konya’s head!!”

The governor of Konya Arpatil is alive and well, as he himself would no doubt attest, being a notable member of our Society ever since his return to Agre on the account of Ulak raid.

“Get this to the emperor immediately!!!!”

The Bazilevs, being on campaign in Altynai lands, has relegated the less important diplomatic and domestic issues to his brother Torkatyr.

The other Ulak stories are no more true than this, as is obvious. They can be recognized by similar definitive traits - lack of fundamental knowledge about Agrinese society, bad knowledge of any of the Imperial languages, exaggerated ruination and multiple factual errors. This message shall be forwarded to Torkatyr, to assist him in rooting out the rumours, both by striking at the source and by tasking messangers with similar debunking, which is remarkably easy to do.

Up yours, Krimzon! :p

Nice story, really, but we can't let propaganda go unanswered. ;)

You signed peace huh.... with Samark huh... is that even remotely true??

And your lying your butt off, you can't gurantee any of what your said about Konya, you didn't even suspect I would go north did you? Says so in the update. :D

Liar liar pants on fire, my herald will show you for the fraud you are. May his message free your subjects of the incompetence of your bureaucracy!! :p

Muah. Poor Krimzon, seems like das has read you like a open book. you'r sooo dead... :D

Personally speaking, I'm sure das has already guessed and prepared for all possible contingencies and actions that you may take ;)

das, when do we have planning time again in the other nes.

Did he prepare for a sudden smilie face invasion? I think not.

OOC: Slightly new format for the update. Since I had today to work on this as well, it got kinda big and overblown. Much focus on ulak-agre-altynai war again, just because that’s a big complex war involving lots of armies. Anyway, future updates will be quicker to appear and have much less content. I know I said that before, but… anyway:

225-200 BC
The middle east was yet again bathed in blood, and other conflicts were grinding on around the world.
Yet, in some places, there was a glint of a new and enlightened age to come…

Military Focus:
Battle at Herakleia

immortal2.jpg

The growing empire of Umidia declared war on Mycenae, with no real justification (not that any was needed these days), and crossed into Tarnas from Judean lands with a huge army of horse bowmen, backed up by ranks of spearmen and the new ‘immortal’ elite infantry. Umidia had also gathered many war elephants from their new territories in the far south, armed and equipped in the same fashion as the Tarnasian war elephants. The Tarnasians themselves had agreed to a deal with the Umidians - in return for expelling the Myceneans, Tarnas would have to become part of Umidia, but would keep considerable autonomy. It seemed a better deal than total conquest by the Myceneans.

At first, things did not seem to be going well for Umidia. A quick assault was launched on Tergamon, designed to cut off Mycenaean supplies. Yet, the garrison held out for a long time, taking a heavy toll on the Umidians; and when the city did fall, the Mycenaeans continued to land supplies further along the coast. The Umidian army now marched towards Alnahar (the new capitol of Tarnas), expecting to find and engage Mycenaean forces there, but there was no sign of them.

Finally, the combined Umidian and Tarnasian armies met the Myceneans at Herakleia, which was under siege again. The Mycenaeans had been hoping to complete the siege before turning to destroy the Umidians and retake Tergamon, but stubborn resistance from the Tarnasian garrison (and some Altynai troops, though most had previously been evacuated by sea) prevented the city from falling. With advanced warning of the Umidian arrival, the Mycenaean army was now forced to break off the siege yet again, and both sides lined up for battle near the city…

The Umidians had a carefully thought out and detailed plan of attack, beginning with a cavalry charge and a feigned retreat… The Umidian horse bowmen then introduced the Mycenaeans to the ‘Umidian shot’ – riders loosing off arrows while facing backwards and riding away from the enemy. The Mycenaean raider cavalry continued to chase the horse bowmen, and were led into a trap, ambushed by hidden Umidian spearmen and allied infantry on the flanks, as the Umidian cavalry turned around and joined the attack. With their light cavalry routed, the heavily armoured Mycenaean troops were now left to suffer as they tried to shield themselves from the constant hail of arrows - which was exhausting work, out in the open and in the blistering heat. The Mycenaean heavy horsemen struggled in vain to catch the more nimble horse bowmen, forcing them to either withdraw from battle or to charge headlong into the Umidian infantry.

After several hours of this, the Umidians sent in their war elephants to break the Mycenean formations, and allow the ‘Immortal Warriors’ to get in close with their fearsome Falx blades. Yet somehow the Mycenaeans found the strength to fight back, and having had previous experience of fighting Tarnasian elephants, they were able to hold their ground. A fierce melee began, and the Mycenaeans were almost saved by the return of some of their armoured horsemen, together with some of their lighter cavalry which had been routed earlier. A sizeable quantity of Umidia’s light infantry tried to flee the field, together with some allied Tarnasian troops, only to be cut down in the process. But it seemed the gods of war had already decided against Mycenae… Umidian immortals and cavalry pressed the attack, ensuring a victory for Umidia, and ensuring a crushing blow for the hitherto-unbeatable Mycenaeans. Within days, all Mycenaean troops had been forced to leave the lands of Tarnas and set sail for home.

The invasion of Tarnas was supposed to be an easy victory, the continuation of the reclaimation of old Argosian lands… But the Mycenaeans were frustrated by the arrivals of new enemies at every turn. Mycenaean confidence has been shaken by this defeat, but experience has been gained, as well as the determination to seek revenge on the Umidians in future. Meanwhile, the Mycenaean navy has begun blockading Umidian waters - interrupting their trade across the mediterranean, and sinking several of their galleys.

*Mycenae: -8 Hoplites, -4 Eagle Hoplites, -4 Raiders, -5 Armoured Horsemen
*Tarnas: -1 Hoplite, -3 Spearmen, -2 Heavy Chariots (all lost), -1 War Elephant
*Umidia: -2 Immortal Warriors, -3 Bowmen, -6 Spearmen, -6 Horse Bowmen, -2 War Chariots, -2 War Elephants
*Altynai: -1 Spearmen
*Lands of Tarnas now considered part of Umidia, but with their own laws, governors, and customs. Tarnasian army joins Umidia (hoplites now available to Umidia)
*Mycenaean confidence shaken by this defeat!
*Umidia partially blockaded in the mediterranean.

Civil War in Yaktan
With the death of King Kiung Tak, prince Ulong Tak inherited the throne of Yaktan. The succession seemed to proceed without incident, like countless others before it. But Qui-Zian, the scheming younger brother of Ulong, seized on a scandalous rumour that the new king was not the true son of the previous king, and therefore had no legitimacy to rule. After various documents appeared ‘proving’ that Ulong was not of royal blood, Qui-Zian was able to gather a rebel army and march on the royal palace in Zonguldak.

Although unusual, events like this had also happened before many times in Yaktan. But on this occasion, there was no quick, clean transfer of power to the rebelling force. Ulong escaped to gather his own army of loyalists, and full-blow civil war began across the whole kingdom. Both sides were evenly matched and equally determined, with many wealthy aristocrats and traders hoping to gain power from supporting one side or other…

After years of fighting, Qui-Zian remained in control of the capitol and the west of the country - crushing Ongan uprisings with most of the former Yaktan army under his command - while Ulong’s forces were in the east, with less manpower, but much of the wealth and resources of the Yaktan traders at their disposal. Meanwhile, the north had fallen into disorder, and was invaded by the Ak-Dyngulak peoples from Altynai, who now also had many Oruists among their ranks, thus helping to spread this religion into the north of Yaktan.

With the fighting at a stalemate, three new separate powers emerged, dividing the former territory of Yaktan between them. As the three-way conflict continues, most people are expecting the neighbouring powers of Taejon, Pangari and Altynai to become involved in this conflict in one way or another.

*Yaktan is no more!
*Countries of Gyutan, Zakutan and Yutan appear.
* There were several uprsisings by the Ongan peoples in the most eastern cities, but these have so far been repressed by Qui-Tan.

Agrinese Wars:
War continued across the Agrinese Empire and the lands beyond. Within the empire, new measures aimed at economic reform and recovery were introduced, while conscriptions and taxes continued - although not to such an extent as had been the case under Aleksandyr I, it was still enough to spark a peasant revolt in the lands around Kafa; this despite many imperial proclamations, speaking of the necessity of defeating the villainous enemies of the empire, and promising a brighter future once the wars were over - which did at least help keep the rest of the empire in order

* Agrinese Empire: -1 Levy Spearmen, Kafa is in state of rebellion

Meanwhile, unrest continued in the Ulakam lands (probably helped by Agrinese agents), but brutal repression by the Ulak leaders continued to keep things under control. Thousands more able-bodied men (mainly from the eastern Rayamese cities) were forced into the army, told their families would be killed if they refused to fight, or ran from battle - at the same time, their families were told their sons would be executed, and their lands handed over to more loyal peoples, if they ever rose up in rebellion. Meanwhile, the sight of the gold and loot returning from the Agrinese lands inspired many more horse warriors from all over the Ulak territories to join the fighting.

Firstly, to the north - Agrinese forces attempted to trap the Ulak in the area around Konya, but had to revise their plans when it seemed the Ulak were moving south towards Tarakyan and the heartlands of the empire. This turned out to be just a feint, and the Ulak horde managed to reach Samark lands without much trouble, taking all their loot with them. Various tricks and traps left behind by the Ulak also caused considerable trouble and delays. This was disappointing for the Agrinese, yet was also fortunate in some ways, as their smaller northern army would have had serious trouble against the combined Ulak and Samark forces in a pitched battle. With their enemies making no attempt to move beyond Samark lands, the Agrinese did not cross the border either.

However, the Ulak’s did lose a portion of their forces, as one allied tribe known as the Talani decided not to return west, but instead broke away headed into the north east of the Agrinese Empire (germanic lands previously conquered by Aleksandyr I, which were now under attack by Librian tribes). Some of the Talani ran into Imperial forces and fared badly, while others were more successful, and began to carve out up their own chiefdom on the shores of the northern sea. The nearby Librian tribes continued to cause problems for the local imperial garrisons, which were unable to deal with both threats at once and were forced to withdraw. Whether or not the Librians and the Talani will remain friends is unclear…

Back in the middle east, the Ulaks gathered a huge new army west of Karthia, expecting a major attack from the enemy in that direction. But it did not come, as Agrinese focus was in the Altynai lands. Frustrated by this, the Ulaks did all they could to provoke and lure their enemies. A few over-confident advances by the Karthians were surrounded and wiped out by the overwhelming numbers of Ulak horsemen and conscripts. The Agrinese tried to support Karthia with various raiding forces of their own, but these were continually being drawn deeper across the border, and into disadvantageous skirmishes with Ulak forces - General Samech of the Agrinese was killed in one particularly vicious skirmish. Meanwhile, Ulasan was handed over to Karthian control – allegedly because of the traitorous actions of its governor, although Karthia fears it has just become a buffer-state between Agre and the Ulaks.

The main Agrinese army, led by Bazilevs Karlyk II himself, expanded its control of northern Altynai before attacking Sarbarylk in force. The Altynai remained fortified around their capitol, until the Agrinese sent a detachment of their army through Urluk Sarai to attack Sarbarylk from the west – Now the Altynai concentrated everything they had against this smaller force, while the Dyngulak tribes (who were now fighting for Altynai) joined the attack from the rear. The Agrinese were caught while crossing the river, with half their troops on each side, and were unable to defend themselves properly – with the result that this entire detachment of the Agrinese army was all but annihilated…

hillmen.jpg

The sudden loss of one third of their army was a blow to morale, yet Karlyk II urged his troops on. Even with the losses, they still had a slight superiority in numbers, and a larger superiority in overall quality… And now the Altynai had left the northern route open to them. Despite several more pitched battles, in which the Agrinese suffered from their lack of cavalry forces, Sarbarylk nonetheless remained besieged, and was eventually taken by the triumphant imperial forces. The Altynai people were urged by the Agrinese to rebel and switch sides, and there were many compelling arguments to do so, especially as the war now seemed truly lost. Many troops did rebel or desert their posts, and many spies and agents were gained by the Agrinese. But although Altynai resistance now began to falter, it did not collapse completely, and a new capitol was declared on the island of Sar as the Agrinese fought to expand their control in the south – where the Altynai hillmen and many surviving cavalry forces continued to take a heavy toll on the invaders, ensuring that mainland Altynai could not be completely conquered. Meanwhile, the Dyngulak peoples had moved on southwards into Yaktan to play their part in the disintegration of that country.

*Altynai’s Altyn Guard UU now offer their services to Agre…
*Texts and books from the great library are still in Altynai possession, now said to be at the new capitol of Sar.

On the naval front, Karlyk II had ordered many new galleys to be built, but the demands of the land campaigns meant that the orders could not be completed. The Agrinese navy was nonetheless strengthened, and managed to outnumber the Altynai fleet again, yet this was still not enough to gain a decisive victory at sea – indeed, after several inconclusive battles it was the Agrinese who came off worst.

The Altynai were thus able to evacuate their troops from Herakleia (although many had been lost during the siege and fighting there). After raiding the lands around Agre, trying to distract Agrinese force from the southern fighting, most of them managed to evacuate by sea again - although with the loss of Sarabalyk, their only option was to seek refuge on the island of Sar, and help defend the remnants of the Altynai kingdom.

Other Military Events:
Muskovya stayed clear of the conflict in the south, instead focusing on cautious expansion westward into tribal lands, with no significant battles or losses.

Meanwhile, Videssos expanded in all directions, annexing various tribal chiefdoms without difficulty… Except in the south, where the followers of Phos faced serious resistance from various Vaspurikan tribes (forced from their original homelands by the Videssians in previous decades). The Videssians lacked enough troops to capture the fertile river valley region, and only a small amount of land was gained.

*Videssos: -1 Namdaleni cavalry, -1 Spearmen

Hlobane, now known as Kingdom of Saruk (although not yet a unified monarchy, since tribalism remains dominant), also expanded its rule over various unsettled areas of southern africa, mostly without serious conflict, although several prolonged skirmishes were fought with the tough Xhosa tribes of the north east. Saruk has been slowly expanding towards the lands of the Xhosa for decades, but the cause of the fighting probably has more to do with the aggressive nature of the Xhosa tribes themselves.

*Kingdom of Saruk: -2 Impi

Meanwhile in europe, the leader of the Saxons successfully persuaded the Western Goths to resume their attacks against Almoth, while the Saxons themselves attacked the southern coasts. After years of fighting, weak leadership and internal division, the Almothians could not hold against both these threats. Yet Almoth’s resistance was surprisingly strong at times - the Saxons took particularly heavy casualties among their weaker troops during the fighting for Somefyld. The south of Almoth was nonetheless overrun, terror tactics were used to expel the native Almothian peoples so that they could be replaced by Saxon immigrants – many of those that stayed were enslaved and sold on to the Goths! A somewhat ironic fate for a people with such a long history of enslaving others…

almoth.jpg

Almoth has now lost its wealthiest region, and is no longer a major power in europe. But the pride of the people remains, and the fury of their warriors is only increasing. The highlands of Almoth will probably be a much tougher challenge for any invaders.

In the north, Mycenaean troops defeated the Librian incursions in a well-conducted campagin, and even claimed new territory, resorting morale after their defeat in Tarnas. Motria also reclaimed some territory, working in cooperation with Mycenae.

Fighting continued in south east europe. Catalya soon withdrew all its troops to the coastal cities, abandoning the inland areas to the superior forces of Anguile. The siege of Lisht went on and on - the Catalyans had no hope of breaking it, yet they had just enough strength to repel each Anguilian assault. Anguile could not prevent supplies from reaching the city by sea, while many citizens were ordered to evacuate to other parts of Catalya, thus reducing the strain on the city’s resources. The city of Lisht became more like a fortress - one which is cracking, but still holding out. Oriant was also besieged, but it too is holding firm.

At sea, Ys renewed the attack on Astura, eventually conquering the island. A great number of new ships ensured the defeat of the Catalyan navy – although the victory was not as complete as Ys would have liked, and the Catalyan navy remained a threat. Ys nonetheless went on to attack Logrono, the southernmost Catalyan colony in Africa – here they were again surprised by the strength of the Catalyan defence, as the local Catalyan traders had hired many african mercenaries. After much fighting, Ys was unable to capture the mainland colony, though the nearby island was taken.

Finally, after years of inactivity, the commander of the Anguilan fleet decided to put to sea without any official orders, eager to prove himself – and succeeded in scoring a surprising victory over the much more experienced Catalyans. The Catalyan fleet was now all but destroyed, however this has come too late to have any effect on the mainland sieges just yet.

Despite the heavy casualties of their last campaign, Ormash pressed the attack against Oru with massive reinforcements (including new pikemen and armoured horsemen), and also made efforts to sway the loyalties of the Oru people - Ormash publicly declared that Oruism would still be allowed under its rule, but most of the Orians remained devoted to the leadership of their supreme monks. More fanatics joined the remains of the Oru army, and although Ormash had at least five to one numerical advantage in every battle, it was Ormash that again suffered the heaviest losses, as the Orians fought on fanatically...

snap0386.jpg

In the end though, Ormash simply overwhelmed the country with its masses of troops, retaking the capitol of Oru itself, and expanding its control into the northern mountains. Fanatical resistance still continues in the most remote of these areas, though it is contained and apparently inconsequential to Ormash’s occupation of the rest of the country. Ormash commanders have also been reluctant to attack these last Orian strongholds for fear of further heavy losses.

Finally, the Khiman pirates were kept in check by the Pangan and Rayamese ships. Several Pangari galleys were lost, but this was due more to bad weather and accidents than enemy actions.

Non-military Events:
Agrinese Empire
Having receiving no official blessing from higher authorities, the controversial Mycenaean alchemists took their knowledge of concrete with them to the Agrinese Empire, where it was put to good use in various construction and re-construction projects.
*Agrinese Empire: +1 Infrastructure

After Prince Tarkantyr of the Agrinese Empire, the intended husband of Princess Helen of Mycenae, met a rather sudden demise during his attempt to seize power, Helen soon found herself married to one of Bazilevs Karlyk II’s sons instead. A grand ceremony was held in Argos - a colourful mixture of cultures and customs was on display, and vast quantities of fine foods and alcohol were consumed. But this was also serious show of unity between the two civilisations.
*Dynastic marriage and improved relations between Agrinese Empire and Mycenae

Taejon
The peoples of Taejon now have a universal written script, an iconographic system that can be used with all spoken languages. Minorities can still speak in their own tongue, but must use the new written script for all official business, or face hefty fines and taxes. This has caused outrage among some populations, although it is not as bad as having their own scripts banned altogether. The universal written language has made it easier to transfer knowledge and ideas across the lands of Taejon, and has encouraged literacy among the people in general. The script has also been learnt by scholars in Panga and Ormash.

Meanwhile, the new religion of Taoism takes root in the farmlands of Taejon, with a small but devoted band of followers. The faith is sure to spread further as its teachings are written down and spread from city to city.
*Taejon: +Science rate, Taosim appears in Taejon

Panga
Influenced by aspects of Taoism and other beliefs, Pangari philosopher Kiun Nangav formulates a theory of vital energy called ‘Ki’, which flows across the earth from south to north, animating all forms of life. His theory explains why the southern peoples are more intelligent, virtuous and good natured - because they receive the energy in its pure state, while the peoples of the north receive only the diluted energies (this theory being formulated before Yaktan exploded into violence). As proof of his theory, Kiun Nangav draws attention to how a thin piece of metal, when placed freely floating in a bowl of water, will slowly orient itself north/south, as it responds to the flow of earthly Ki energy (this effect would later be called magnetism!).

At the same time, the rulers of Panga were ordering many explorations to be undertaken to explore the vast expanses of the western ocean. It was now widely accepted that the earth was a globe, and that unknown lands may exist in the west. However, many ships were continually being lost at sea. Several years and lucky escapes later, one of Panga’s well-educated sea captains realised that it would be possible to orient oneself at sea in all weathers and at all times of day, by using the effect described by Kiun Nangav – divine navigation, using the flow of earthly Ki energy as a guide! Using such devices on their boats, Pangan sailors eventually reached a new island in the far west, said to be a wild and harsh land, populated by strange tribes and fierce warriors.
*Basic compasses in Panga!

Pictland
Trouble is brewing in this harsh, but wild and romantic land. Cultural influences from the south are nothing new, but they are now having greater impact. An increasingly wealthy and powerful class of merchants (many Yssians immigrants and their descendents among them) is causing friction with the traditional warrior aristocracy (which is undergoing change itself, with the introduction of cavalry warfare and a new mounted elite). Both groups are competing for land ownership, and economic and cultural dominance - usually avoiding violence, but there has been an increasing amount of trouble across the islands.

It is feared that Pictland may soon begin breaking apart, with pro-trade, pro-Yssian factions on one side, and aristocratic warrior factions on the other. For the other powers in the region, it may be in their interest to support one of these sides above the other…

Colexia
Different factions continued to jostle for position. With confused loyalties, and little sense of direction, it was easy for internal conflict and disorder to thrive. Few peoples have any real sense of nationalism at this point in history, but this was even less so in Colexia. For a while, there was some serious fighting going on between clans and minority groups, and a total collapse of the country seemed inevitable. But now the unstable republic has been replaced by a new kingdom, under king Olek I, who has proved to be a very capable leader, and has managed to begin building a new sense of identity for the country that spans Pictish, Zekulian and Yssian cultures. On one hand, he has generously rewarded loyalty, and has been merciful to all rebels who agree to recognise the kingdom. On the other hand, he has brutally crushed all those that defied him. Colexia remains stable under King Olek I, but many doubt that the new kingdom will continue long after his death.

Saxony
The confidence of the Saxons is restored, and much wealth was looted from the recent conquests. After having being sacked by the East Goths, Oldenburg begins to recover as a trading centre. As Saxony’s power and influence grows, more foreign advisors and men of knowledge find their way to Dresden, where they debate with tribal mystics and sages about life, the universe, and everything. No other place in the world has such a varied and colourful mix of ideas.

Ys
The mood in the Ys League is mainly one of confidence and excitement. Military news has not been all that great, especially with the abandonment of the Gilburg peninsular to the goths, but Yssian sailors continue to bring back tales of adventure from their explorations in the south, inspiring new generations to take to the seas. Growing trade profits fuel the continued shipbuilding and exploration.

However, life among the fledgling colonies is hard, and increasing numbers of troops are needed to guard them against both land-based tribes and seafaring pirates (many former Catalyan sailors have now turned to privateering). But some colonists, especially the merchant elite in Sulchan, have become rather wealthy, and enjoy standards of living higher than in the capitol of Ys itself, as they have access to the best of both worlds – trade with the middle east and south asia (via the Altynai colonies) has brought ideas like running water, improved medicines and sanitation. Indeed, comforts and luxuries from as far away as Panga and Taejon can be found here, together with all the luxuries of Yssian lands. All this sophistication has yet to catch on in Ys itself though, as the journey to the furthest colonies can take the best part of a year - while there is a considerable level of isolation, and a system of governors and colonial codes has made the colonies more self sufficient, the colonists remain loyal to the Ys league at this point.

Saruk
The Kingdom of Saruk is also benefiting from this trade and sophistication. While the region remains stable, Saruk is gradually absorbing ideas and technologies from both europe and asia. The culture of Saruk is undergoing a quite radical change, from inward-looking tribalism to free-thinking expansionism. But this change may also bring instability in future… Already, measures have begun to crack down on any insubordination or disorder. Meanwhile, the ‘Nomad’s Capitol’ was completed at great expense to serve as the new centre of government, around which the new city of Saruk took shape.

Kenbu
Various nomadic peoples and tribes have come under the sway of the emerging power of Kenbu, and its influence has spread across the island and beyond. Contact has also been established with Yssian and Altynai traders. As with Saruk, the leaders of Kenbu have shown a keen interest in new technology, and are embracing foreign ideas.

Umidia
Among the various peoples of north Africa that have recently come under Umidian rule, there is a mix of both inspired loyalty and deep resentment. Some welcome the seeming strength and stability of Umidia, while some still pine for their lost independence. Africa has never seen an empire as large or as strong as Umidia is now, and it is taking a while for the people to get used to the idea. In the homelands of Umidia itself, confidence remains high, and the king is revered by the people (at least, for as long as glory and victory continue). Vast wealth is also flowing into the captiol – although, it is being spent just as fast, on the military campaigns and road construction projects.

Random Issues:
Saxony: The Fate of Almothian slaves
Many slaves were captured during the recent campaign, mainly Finnysh and various germanic peoples. Should they be freed, sold, or set to work for their new masters?

Agrinese Empire: Restoring the Pyramids of Argos
The construction of the pyramids is often wrongly attributed to the Argosian Empire. Indeed, the scale, shape and style of the structures, and their strange internal chambers, is unlike any of the Argosian’s own monuments. Agrinese scholars discovered ancient texts that point to a much older origin, a time well before the city of Argos even existed. It is known that the outer appearance of the pyramids was restored by the Argosians around 1750 BC, but their original creators are unknown.

The appearance of the monuments has deteriorated again over the centuries, and it is suggested that they be restored – at great expense, of course - with certain cosmetic additions, to project the power and glory of the Agrinese Empire and the Bazilevs! Some Agrinese scholars also want to explore for hidden chambers said to be buried underneath. But all this might offend the ‘hellenistic’ peoples of the empire (and relations with the Mycenean peoples), who would prefer that the legacy of the Argosians (at least, the legacy as they see it) be left alone…

NPC Diplo:
From Rayam
To Shimazu

We propose a formal alliance and mutual trade rights!

From Rayam
To Ormash

Ginash has long stood as a neutral area between our borders. Ormash is clearly on the rise, and we would recognise your full control of the Ginash region, should you wish to press your claims there. We also propose that our peoples become more assertive against the threats from the militant Ulak barbarians – will you sign a defensive alliance and trade rights treaty with us?

From Catalya
To Anguile and Ys

Again, we stress the importance of peace for all our peoples, so we may end this age of destruction and return to more civilised concerns. We are willing to make very generous peace terms – wouldn’t you rather receive our wealth as tribute, rather than fighting and destroying it?

Possible Rebellions:
Judean rebellions remain a possibility. Ongan rebellions were recently put down in former Yaktan lands, and further attempts are unlikely, but remain a possibility in the Pagan-claimed areas. Oru fanatics will continue to cause trouble, but are unlikely to be able to do anything as long as the Ormash military remains concentrated in the area. Altynai peoples of the mainland have neither the strength nor the will to rebel against Agre.
