Do you believe people have a right to work?

I've seen people complain about those who don't have work, but the fact is that there are not enough jobs out there for everyone to have one. So does each person have the right to a job? If so, how would would those jobs be created? If not, do we owe those who can not find a job help for however long they are unemployed?

EDIT: and by work I mean paid employment...

Yes, but they don't have a RIGHT/ENTITLEMENT to get paid, but yeah if they want to go work in their garden, more power to them.

You have a right to work in the sense you should not be denied the opportunity to work if you are the most qualified.

ok, that at least made me laugh, but you know what I mean

do people have the right to paid work?

I have the right to not be denied work based on the fact that I am a long term unemployed individual. Bad enough there's a stigmata of being unemployed for a long time, what grinds my gears are the "Unemployed need not apply" signs.

People have a right to compete for work.

You in particular don't have a job because you don't want one, as we have been over many times before. You also don't have a particularly good skill set to compete either.

I agree with this person. You need skills, which at times can be hard to come by. It's all about getting one over your competitors, be it through voluntary/Charity work, education, "priveledges" and "connections".

I've never seen signs like that - where are you? I don't doubt it, just haven't seen it in my area

but even if everyone did that, there would still be more people looking for work than jobs...

All humans have the right and obligation to work, to his own benefits and the benefits of the comunity.
Other thing is that, that person doesn't have, because he he didn't want or didn't could, the right preparation to do a specific job
Here in Spain the young generation are called Ni-Ni :ni estudio ni trabajo (I don't study nor I don't work) very bad for the future

How many times have I have to go through with this!? I do want a job! What is so hard to understand about that?!

Well, in the USA at least, I would say 'pursuit of happiness' covers this, and since it says 'pursuit' then no.

I asked you this in another thread and you didnt answer. Formally, you said there were petty jobs that you simply wouldnt take even if offered them. If you have a right to work, then you should be happy to dig ditches for a minimum wage. Right?

Would you be willing to do a job...any job...in order to find employment? Just how bad do you want a job?

This is basically what I was going to post.

You're free to work, and should not be stopped from working. Whether or not you're going to work towards some product that people will pay for, is another question. No, there's no entitlement towards that.

I don't think it's a bad idea, though, for a government to subsidise the wages of those who're willing to work, but aren't productive enough to earn a living wage.

Yes, according to some:

Leviticus 19:10 Do not go over your vineyard a second time or pick up the grapes that have fallen. Leave them for the poor and the alien. I am the LORD your God.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Leviticus 23:22 "'When you reap the harvest of your land, do not reap to the very edges of your field or gather the gleanings of your harvest. Leave them for the poor and the alien. I am the LORD your God.'"
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Deuteronomy 24:19 When you are harvesting in your field and you overlook a sheaf, do not go back to get it. Leave it for the alien, the fatherless and the widow, so that the LORD your God may bless you in all the work of your hands.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Deuteronomy 24:20 When you beat the olives from your trees, do not go over the branches a second time. Leave what remains for the alien, the fatherless and the widow.

You might want it, but you have to put ALOT of effort into getting one, and accepting a job instead of rejecting it if it does not "suit you". Jobs are tough enough to get at this time.

But that's not what your poll says... There's a big difference between "paid work" & "work" & we can only vote on the actual poll question, not the one you meant it to be.

As VRWCAgent said, people have a right to work, but not paid work. Employers can't be forced to employ labor that isn't needed or can't be afforded. That's a no-brainer.

I voted "Other" because your poll didn't make much sense.

And to think that the sons of the heroes of the Terror have allowed themselves to be degraded by the religion of work, to the point of accepting, since 1848, as a revolutionary conquest, the law limiting factory labor to twelve hours. They proclaim as a revolutionary principle the Right to Work. Shame to the French proletariat! Only slaves would have been capable of such baseness.
